Chapter 75: Chapter 75 A Scapegoat
’Oh no, what now? A scapegoat.’
I turned around, and so did Damon, his brows knitted together.
His eyes burned with fury when the maid brought out the locket from her dress.
The entire room fell silent as the maid trembled on her knees, clutching the locket in her hands like it could protect her. Damon’s gaze darkened. The air around him charged, growing heavier with each breath he took.
I stood still, my heart pounding like a drum in my chest. Something wasn’t right. I could feel it. The way her voice trembled when she confessed, the suddenness of it all... it didn’t sit well with me.
Damon stepped forward, his eyes locked on the maid. "Why?" he asked, his voice low and sharp like a blade. "Why would you do this?"
He glanced at a guard, signalling him to open the door to the maid’s cell.
The metal clanked open. Damon crossed the threshold, stepping inside the cell. The room bent beneath the pressure of his presence, as if the world itself wasn’t ready to contain him.
The maid sniffled and bowed her head, her frame trembling. "You killed my sister," she said in a shaky voice. "She was one of the guards... the one who helped a witch escape. You executed her without even giving her a chance to explain herself. I watched her die... and I’ve lived with that pain every day since."
Damon’s brows furrowed, but his face remained unreadable. "She broke the law."
"She was protecting someone," the maid shot back. "Just like you protect people you care about."
Her words hung in the air. For a moment, I wasn’t sure how Damon would respond. Then his eyes darted to the locket. His eyes flickered to grey. "And this?" he asked.
She hesitated, then spoke again. "I wanted to drive you mad. I wanted you to feel helpless, the way I did when I saw my sister die."
My eyes narrowed. Her story sounded emotional; however, something didn’t add up. I remembered that night clearly... I saw Allison holding the locket. Or had I?
For a split second, doubt flickered in my mind. What if I had seen wrong? What if it was dark and my vision blurred by blood and fear? My hands curled at my sides. No. I couldn’t second-guess myself now.
"Traitor," Allison growled from the cell, her voice dripping with rage. "Let me out, Alpha Damon. Let me talk with her; she is one of my people."
Damon growled, but he turned to the guards. "Open the gate."
"What?" I blurted out before I could stop myself.
He glanced at me, then spoke to the guards again. "Open it. Let her out."
The gate creaked open slowly. Allison stepped out, her movements stiff, her eyes locked on the trembling maid. I didn’t know what Damon had in mind, but something in the air screamed danger. Still, I stayed quiet. I needed to see how this would unfold.
Allison walked past Damon without a word. Her eyes didn’t leave the maid for a second. She stood right in front of her, the tension between them thick enough to choke on.
The maid looked up, her lips parted in shock. "A-Alpha Allison..."
That was all she could say.
In the blink of an eye, Allison’s claws slashed across the maid’s neck. Blood spurted out as the girl gasped, choking on her last breath before collapsing to the ground. A pool of blood quickly spread beneath her.
I covered my mouth with both hands. The entire room went still.
Damon moved instantly, grabbing Allison by the arm and slamming her against the wall. The wall shook and cracked from the impact. "What have you done?" he barked, his voice thundered through the dungeon. His blood-chilling aura spread through the air like cobwebs.
We all fell on our knees with our necks bared.
Allison’s eyes were cold and calm, masking the fear beneath that bravado facade. "She was one of mine. It was my duty to make sure order is maintained in my pack. She embarrassed all of us with that false confession. My pack and I almost got killed because of her!"
"You killed her before I could question her!" Damon roared, his grip tightening. "She would’ve said more after I tortured her!"
"She had already confessed," Allison said calmly. "There was nothing more she needed to say."
"This is my territory!" he shouted again. "You had no right!"
"I had every right," she snapped. "Don’t forget, I am still an Alpha. That girl stained my pack’s name. If I had allowed her to live, it would’ve sent a message that betrayal is tolerated."
I took a step back, bile rising in my throat. The way she spoke... there was no remorse. Just a cold, twisted sense of pride in what she had done. Or rather, it felt like she was tying her loose ends.
Damon let go of her arm and took a deep breath. His eyes were silvery grey now. He didn’t say anything for a long moment. He looked like he wanted to rip her apart, his throat tightened as if he were trying to control his actions.
"She soiled the Crescent Moon’s reputation," Allison added calmly. "I’m sorry. I was too impulsive. I should have let you handle the situation, as you were the one who was targeted."
"So you knew," Damon slammed her against the wall again. Alpha Allison whimpered as he growled at her. His fangs elongated. "I want to rip you apart, Alpha Allison. You have the audacity to make a decision under my nose?!"
Alpha Allison sputtered out blood. Her eyes turned gold. "I said I apologize."
"Not enough!" He slammed her again. The wall crumbled from the impact.
Allison winced in pain.
Damon let go of her. "Get out of my territory right now! Or I will hunt you down," he growled.
Allison stared at him with longing and pain. She looked like she wanted to say something. But she turned around, walking out of the dungeon; her pack members followed after her.
’The bitch just wriggled her way out of death.’ My eyes lingered on the maid’s body. She died protecting the real traitor. I wondered if I had said something, if the situation would have turned out differently.
