Chapter 66: Chapter 66 Caught

Quickly, I ducked low, my heart thundering in my chest. ’I can’t get caught now; it will be over for me.’

Footsteps approached rapidly toward where I’d been.

’If you remain here, Ember, you are as good as dead. Run!’

I didn’t think twice; my feet moved on their own. I ran through the garden paths, through tall grass and branches that whipped across my arms. I ducked under a wooden archway and pressed myself against a tree.

I heard the sound of twigs snapping from a few feet away. Cold sweat dripped down my face, my chest burned, and my breath came out ragged.

’I can’t return to the dungeon—not yet. Not without something more solid.’ I peeked from the tree. Allison paced around the space, sniffing the air. Her hazel eyes had turned to gold.

I pulled back into the cover of the tree. ’Okay, I think I need to reach Lydia and Caroline. I need to tell them what I saw. And who knows if they are in danger now because of me.’

When I peeked again, she was heading in my direction. My heart thudded against my ribs. I needed a plan now. A diversion. I looked over my shoulders, and the torches burned fiercely just a few feet away. The werewolves were still patrolling. If I could make it into the open, she wouldn’t attack me, as she was supposed to be asleep now.

With the plan in mind, I dashed towards the open. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I glanced back; Allison was already where I had been hiding earlier. The bushes whipped across my face, mist blowing out from my nose.

The sound of bones cracking echoed through the air. ’Oh no.’ Abruptly, I turned around, my eyes locking with golden eyes burning with fury. Its brown fur bristled, its lips peeled back, revealing its jagged teeth.

My body went still, horror dancing within my eyes. I swallowed, my legs trembling. "Run," a strange voice in my head yelled.

I turned around, running with all my strength. I glanced back momentarily; the wolf was closing in on me. ’For fucking sake, Allison!’

As if she knew my plan, she diverted. She ran parallel to me, her eyes sparkling with malice. Then she took off, running past me. ’What is she going to do?’

My eyes followed her blurred form that was heading around the bushes. ’She’s going to block me. Fuck!’

Getting trapped here was a death sentence. I had to get out into the open, even if I had to take the risk. I increased my pace, pushing down the blaring sound in my head.

A stunned look flickered across her eyes. She might have been wondering if I was stupid. She increased her pace, blurring through the bushes.

I had a good chance to reach the open space because I was taking the shorter route while Allison was taking a detour.

The space between us closed as we were a few feet from intercepting. ’This is not the time to be scared. Just run fast and don’t look to your side.’ I chanted in my head.

I looked forward to the open space, ignoring the approaching danger. Just then, as I was about to cross into the open space, the wolf launched and leapt into the air with jaws apart. My heart pounded in my ears, but I couldn’t stop. I could not stop.

My eyes burned with hope as I was just a few steps away from safety. Pain shot through my back as the wolf’s claws ripped my flesh open. My eyes stung with pain.

The smell of blood filled the air, my eyes blurred for a moment, my scream dying in my throat. My face contorted with pain. I fell to the ground, avoiding her attack.

I crawled, whimpering in pain, as I stretched my bloodied hand towards the safety that was blurring away from my eyes.

A menacing growl echoed from behind me. I glanced back. The twigs snapped underneath her paws as she walked closer to me. With the speed of lightning, she lunged again. I shut my eyes, expecting the pain of my skin being ripped apart.

Just then, the mark on my lower shoulder burned like I was being scorched by a seething red rock. I gasped for air.

Then, the crashing of an object into the ground echoed through the air. I peeled my eyes open. The bush parted in a long stream, a testament to how Allison had skidded through the bush.

From afar, Allison stood up on her fours. She swayed, shaking her head, unable to process what had just happened.

My eyes squinted in disbelief. ’What happened? How was she sent flying?’ I looked around, but there was no one, and I couldn’t help but wonder why the patrolling guards hadn’t discovered us yet.

I dragged myself to my feet, my back drenched with blood. I had become a walking time bomb waiting to be discovered. But staying here wasn’t an option. I had to get to the open space before she got closer to me.

My back screamed in protest from every movement I made. I glanced over my shoulders. She was racing toward me. I fastened my pace, ignoring the pain.

I made it into the open space. A sigh of relief escaped from my lips. However, this didn’t mean I was totally safe. If the inside of the bush was like a sea of lava, this was like a minefield. One wrong step, and I’m done for.

I dragged myself along the walls, the world tilting before standing still again. I looked back, and Allison hid behind the cover of the bushes. She was Alpha from another pack; roaming around in her wolf form in another pack was disrespectful and always signaled a threat.

My lips curved into a smirk. I walked towards the direction of the dungeon. Strangely, the werewolves didn’t detect my scent, nor the smell of my blood.
