Chapter 31: Chapter 31 The Flood
I entered the car quickly to avoid annoying him. As we sat behind the car, I couldn’t help the curiosity that was running through my veins.
"Master," I began, but he didn’t reply to me, though I knew he was listening. "How did you get this car? It looks very advanced."
Damon spared a glance at me. "Aren’t you an Alpha’s child? How come you don’t know?"
"Me and my family were not that close, so I couldn’t ask them any questions," I fumbled with my hands.
He exhaled before parting his lips to speak. "These cars were gotten from the human world. There isn’t much of it, because it requires fuel to be able to work—something we don’t have. So we could only get a few of them, basically one car to every Alpha of the pack."
"So there is also a human world... Master, can we see?" My voice sounded louder, as I was excited to see the human world over here. I couldn’t help but wonder what it looked like. If they have cars, does it mean that it is the same world as mine? And was there any possibility for me to meet my mother and father?
"No," he replied curtly, bursting my balloon into nothing but shreds.
"But Master..." he raised up his hand sternly, stopping me midway.
I closed my lips in dejection. ’Fine, even though he doesn’t agree now, I’ll surely find a way to go to the human world,’ I thought inwardly as I returned my gaze outside the window of the car.
As we moved past the buildings that looked far behind civilization in my world, the roofs were made of a type of brick like those in Britain.
As we drove further away from the castle, I saw people... werewolves walking, running, and playing in the streets. They looked quite happy. Maybe the economy is good to them.
Seeing them made me feel nostalgic, as it reminded me of my world—a place of freedom and mostly peace. They were not as physically brutal as they are in this world, although some of them can be quite violent and dangerous. But there are not a lot of them.
"It looks like you are a good leader," I muttered under my breath, knowing fully well that he would be able to hear me.
"I hope I am," he replied, his gaze returning back to my face.
I sighed, "Do you know how long it will take for us to get there?"
"About an hour or so," the driver interjected.
I nodded my head, but my body tensed up as I could feel his burning gaze piercing through my head.
The ride was so uncomfortable because someone thought it was a good idea to turn me into their gazing sight.
The road leading into the village was barely a road anymore. It was muddy and uneven, with puddles of dirty water and deep grooves where carts must’ve once passed. Everything smelled like wet wood, damp clothes, and something sour, like food left out too long.
Most of the huts were damaged. Some had their roofs caved in. Others were leaning so badly it looked like a strong breeze would knock them over. Pieces of broken furniture floated in the water. Bits of straw and cloth stuck to tree branches and fences.
People were everywhere, trying to fix what they could. A woman was scooping muddy rice back into a cracked pot, her hands shaking. A man sat in the middle of the mess, staring at nothing. Kids stood barefoot in the cold water, hugging themselves for warmth.
No one said much. Just a few whispers, the sound of wood creaking, and a baby crying somewhere. My chest tightened as I looked at them.
Clothes were hanging on trees, left to dry. Even the walls people tried rebuilding were stained dark with mud.
I looked around and felt my heart sink in my chest. It didn’t feel like a village anymore. It felt like something that used to be one.
The car came to a stop. "Alpha, I’m afraid this is how far I can go," the driver said, his voice laced with respect.
"It’s fine, Luke. We’ll walk from here." Damon opened the door to his side before stepping out of the car. Following his lead, I also stepped out.
The wet ground compressed under my foot as I walked to Damon’s side.
"Let’s go. The others must be waiting for us." I followed after him as we walked around the part of the land that wasn’t overflowed by water.
Not too far off, I saw the elders and Alaric talking. I couldn’t help but feel shivers running down my spine. ’What if I could not resolve this issue? What if I make it worse?’
"Ember," Damon’s voice brought me out of my stupor. Abruptly, I turned towards him, with furrowed brows.
"Yes."
"You look like you are in deep thought. Feeling nervous?"
"Yes, a little." I nodded my head. "The flood is a little more serious than I thought."
His gaze brooded over me. "It’s okay. You’re not doing it alone. You have me and the elders to help with anything you need."
I nodded my head to his words. Then we got to where the elders were waiting on an elevated wooden platform. I couldn’t help but feel sad for the children who were staring at us with wide eyes.
"Mother, the Alpha is here!" one of the kids ran through the open land into a half-broken house.
"Alpha Damon," the elders bowed with their hands across their chests.
"How is everything going?" Damon’s gaze swept over the elders’ faces, then onto the land that was covered with dirty brown water.
In the middle of the flooded areas, most of the houses had been swallowed by the water. The situation was too dire. I highly doubted that building only a low wall would do the trick.
"Alpha, the flood is rising dangerously. I must suggest we evacuate the pups, women, and older people out of the area," Alaric’s voice was urgent.
