Chapter 96: Look alike

Ave ran away from the direction where she had shared an intimate moment with the second prince until she reached the large open halls where more people she’d never seen before were still making their way to the dining hall for breakfast. She slowed down to avoid drawing attention to herself for running inside the palace and schooled her expression and flushed face.

She licked her lips to moisten them but could only taste Lucian’s lips on hers, and her heart rate increased again as what they had just done flashed in her mind, overshadowing her fear of him being a vampire after her blood. She instinctively reached out her hand and traced her lips, which had reduced their throbbing and swelling but were still slightly bruised and painful at the same time sweet and warm.

She had never felt this way before and had never known the feeling of having a man’s lips on hers. Lucian’s kiss had made her forget the third prince’s disgusting kiss completely. The more she thought about the kiss, the more the heat in her body rose, and her lower abdomen twisted and throbbed in a way that made her feel the urge to find release from something pooling up there, though she had no idea how or what that feeling was, as she’d never experienced it before.

Ave was walking absentmindedly toward the dining hall when she heard collective voices call her name, and she jumped and swirled around to see the three princesses she had come to consider friends, and was now their dance teacher, hurrying toward her, each of them looking excited at the sight of her.

The moment they reached her, they put her in their middle and began to ask in concern, "What happened to you after we left the river? Did brother Lucian scold you?" Isolde asked, her face a mask of horror, as she’d seen how displeased he was the day before yesterday at the riverside when Ave had fallen in. Not to mention they hadn’t had the chance to go to the doomed palace yesterday, as they were to stay and welcome the guests.

"I heard you were sick? Did he do something to you?" Celeste’s voice came as well before Ave could answer the other girl’s question.

"You look a bit flushed, Selene. Are you all right? And your lips, they look bruised. What happened to you?" Thalia’s worried voice came as she stared at Ave’s face in concern, causing Ave to flush even more as the question made her revisit her time with Lucian in the corridors.

Speaking of Lucian, they all stopped walking when he suddenly appeared from the other side. Without sparing any of them a glance, not even Ave, he walked into the dining hall and disappeared from their sight, causing Ave to frown slightly at the way he’d ignored her.

"He looks mad," Celeste whispered as she finally released the breath she didn’t know she was holding when she spotted Lucian.

Ave was still staring at where he’d disappeared when she heard Thalia speak. "The dressmaker will bring our dresses this evening, and I heard you’ll be staying here until the ceremonies are over. Isn’t that wonderful, girls?" She asked her siblings, who, despite liking that Ave would be staying, shrugged as if it didn’t make any difference to them.

They began walking toward the dining hall when suddenly someone walked into them, breaking their formation to pass. In the process, the person stepped on Ave’s foot and bumped into her shoulder, causing her head to snap up at the person, who happened to be a young woman. From the maidservant following behind her and how she held her head high, Ave knew she must be one of the princesses from another kingdom.

The princess’s rudeness and how she didn’t turn to apologize made Ave frown in displeasure. Without caring that the person was a princess and she’d promised not to act like herself in the guests’ presence, she called out to her,

"Hey, we’re people, you know? We aren’t stones you can just step on and pretend not to notice or apologize. It was very rude of you to break into our group and just walk away like that," she remarked, making the three princesses next to her gasp in astonishment and fear, while also causing the woman to stop in her tracks.

Ave felt Thalia tug at her dress, but she didn’t pay any attention and stared at the young woman’s back, where her waist-length black hair poured down like black silk. When she slowly turned to face Ave, Ave’s breath momentarily caught in her lungs as her eyes fell on the young woman’s face.

Hell no! She thought in shocked disbelief, her jaw falling slack. It wasn’t the princess’s beauty that caught her off guard, but her features. Her features were unbelievably similar to Ave’s real face—not entirely identical, but if Ave had her real face and stood beside this person, they’d be taken as twins, with only the color of her hair and eyes being different, but everything else was the same.

Ave had light blue eyes with blonde hair, while this person had black hair and olive eyes. Ave couldn’t say a word as the princess walked back toward her and looked her up and down in a degrading way before she said with a sneer and a mocking smile,

"I never knew you were a person who I needed to apologize to for stepping on. Last I recalled, you are beneath me and always will be. Tsk, it seems the Pendragon slaves are getting too much freedom in this palace if they think they can now talk to me and expect an apology," she clicked her tongue. Then, glancing at the three Pendragon princesses standing beside Ave, she shook her head in disappointment.

"You three have always been a disgrace to the Pendragon blood, and now you’re hanging around a slave princess. What a shame," she looked at them one last time, then turned on her heels and left, leaving Ave completely speechless and unable to respond. Not because she was afraid, but because she couldn’t picture her real face being a complete bitch and an arrogant princess who looked down on others. Could it be that she was one of this person’s descendants, given how they looked alike?

"Pahh," Celeste sighed in relief, placing her hand against her chest. "For a moment, I thought Selene was going to talk back to Princess Madeline. My soul almost left my body," she whispered softly as they watched Princess Madeline, the first princess of the Banzai Kingdom, disappear into the halls with her maidservants.

"It’s good she didn’t talk back to her, or we would have gotten into trouble," Isolde remarked from the side, finally snapping Ave back to her senses after the so-called Princess Madeline disappeared from sight.

"Who is she, and why are you all scared of her?" Ave asked in curiosity, unable to remove the image from her head—her face, with different eyes and hair color.

"She is the gem of the Banzai Kingdom and one of the most beautiful maidens in all of our Empire. She is doted on by her father, the king of Banzai, and our father, the Emperor, would give and do anything to make her satisfied because he doesn’t want to get on the king’s bad side. King Maximus is one of the greatest pillars of our Empire apart from the Emperor," Thalia explained with a grim expression, as she knew with Madeline and her family in the palace, things were about to get difficult for everyone, especially them.

"We dare not make her angry unless we want to be reported to the Emperor and get punished by being locked in our chambers until the guests leave the palace. Have you forgotten what she did to you last year?" Thalia asked, as they stood there, the halls already cleared since everyone had entered the dining hall without them realizing it.

"Refresh my memory, please," Ave said with a small smile. "You know I have trouble remembering things after my accident."

"She..." Thalia began to say, but when she saw how quiet the whole open hall was and that everyone was now in the dining hall, her gray eyes widened. "Oh no, everyone has arrived at the dining hall! We need to go!" she exclaimed in panic, as none of them had ever arrived late for meals—well, except Ave, who arrived late all the time.

"My Lord, mother is going to kill us!" the twins exclaimed at the same time and started to hurry toward the hall, dragging Ave with them. Only for Ave to break into a run, pulling them along, and they automatically ran with her as she held their hands. Something a princess was not supposed to be found doing, but the thought of arriving late made them run.
