Chapter 89: Teach awareness

[Long Chapter.]

---

Though Ave didn’t fully understand what he meant by doing wicked things to her, she felt her face flush and heat up as her heart rate increased. Using her tongue to wet her lips, she inquired from him in a whisper,

"What do you mean by wicked things? Like, do you mean you want to cause me pain or kill me?" She didn’t know why her stupid heart was beating fast when he’d only said he wanted to do wicked things. Wasn’t she supposed to get scared and run away from him? Then why was she curious about what these wicked things he spoke of were?

His eyes turned to hers. "More like a pain that comes with pleasure, and more like a torture that makes you want more. If you keep licking your lips like that, I will be forced to punish you one of these days by breaking every boundary of what you might have never imagined." He spoke in a dangerously low voice that sent shivers down her spine and made her gulp.

"Are we really talking about the wickedness I know of, or another one that I’m completely not getting right now?" she asked anxiously, staring into his burning eyes, blurring out the other people in the background and the voices around them.

Ave watched Lucian’s lips curl into a lazy smile before he turned his body to face her. Before she knew it, she felt his large hand working slowly up her thigh in a way that made her breath hitch and caused her stomach to flutter. His hand began to massage her thigh, his fingers moving slowly upward in a smooth movement that made her involuntarily let out a small moan that caught her by surprise and made her snap back to her senses.

When Ave leaned down to demand what he thought he was doing, she was astonished to hear her voice sound breathless.

"What are you doing?" she breathed, watching as his amazed eyes locked onto hers as if he wasn’t massaging and touching her thigh.

"Showing you a small demonstration of what any man’s wicked intentions are when he’s being tempted. I thought you were smart, but it seems you aren’t versed in this aspect, Aveline, and we need to work on your awareness around men," he said in a voice low enough for only her to hear.

Ave froze as his hand was now dangerously close to her inner thigh and her sensitive part, causing her to hold her breath before she heard his deep voice fall on her ear, "And this is the part where you push me away, or I will think you really want me to continue."

Ave quickly slapped his hand away from her thigh and moved back. But she had forgotten she was sitting on a single rock and instead fell to the ground.

Ave heard the worried voices of the people as she fell to the ground, but before anyone could approach and help her up, Lucian had already gotten up from his sitting position and held out his hand to her.

"You are such a clumsy woman," he clicked his tongue, as if he hadn’t been the cause of her clumsiness.

Ave dared not take his hand after what he had done a moment ago and made her feel. It had been just a slight touch, but every inch of his fingers on her skin had elicited tingling sparks, she could still feel the lingering warmth of his hand on her thigh and the heat poolling up in her lower abdomen tightening a muscle. Even her breathing was unsteady, and her heartbeat was all over the place—so loud she could hear it in her ears.

She quickly got up by herself without taking his hand or meeting his eyes. Clearing her throat, she turned her back to him so he wouldn’t see her flushed face and said, "Don’t... don’t ever do that again. I am not your wife, nor am I interested in you in such a way. I am..." she was saying when his nonchalant voice came from behind her,

"Don’t read too much into it, Milady. Trust me, I’m not interested in you. I was just giving you a lesson in awareness—because clearly, you should never let a man who’s not your husband get that close to touching you."

Ave frowned. What did he mean by that? He wasn’t interested in her? Then what was that thing he just pulled on her a while ago? Teaching her awareness by touching her? Was she thinking too much into his words and actions because she’d never been close to a man before to know when he was being sexually intimate?

Ave turned to glance at him and noticed his expression had turned blank, and the dark glint she had seen in his eyes was gone. She sighed softly, dismissing whatever he had done to her a while ago, trying to ignore the lingering warmth she still felt on her thigh and the sensation still fluttering in her lower abdomen that had yet to subside.

"I don’t lack awareness, and I don’t need you to teach me," she muttered under her breath.

"Says the person who allowed me to touch her a moment ago," he said in sarcasm, and Ave glared at him to hide her embarrassment.

Clearing her throat, she sat back on the rock and stared at the fire. She saw from the corner of her eye how he also sat back on the rock beside her. They sat in silence, staring at the burning log of wood in the fire, before Ave said,

"Do you have mistresses or concubines?" She didn’t know why she asked, but she was curious after last night when she saw him and Zane leave the palace at night to go to the courtesan’s house.

"No, I only have you," she heard him say seriously, causing her heart to flutter again. Why did he keep speaking like this?

"You only have Selene," she corrected softly. "Then, was that why you visited the courtesan’s house—to have sex?" she whispered, and she saw as his brows arched before he looked at her.

Lucian was not only surprised that she knew about him going to the courtesan’s house but also surprised by how bold she was to say the word "sex" in the open, when women were brought up to feel shy about things like that.

"I didn’t do anything at the courtesan’s house," he clarified, even though he knew he didn’t need to give her an explanation of what he went there to do, as men were allowed to have many women apart from the one they kept in their house as their wife.

Ave shrugged casually. "It doesn’t matter what you did there, no one will question you. I am not your wife, nor am I in the position to stop you from seeing another woman," she said, even though the thought that he had gone to the courtesan’s house had bothered her last night. Now that he assured her he hadn’t done anything there, it made her feel somewhat at ease, though she tried not to show it, as she had no idea why it was her business.

"Hmm," Lucian hummed and then looked away from her. She was right; she wasn’t his wife after all, and he didn’t need to give her an explanation.

"By the way, why don’t you have a concubine or a mistress? I thought it was a normal thing here," Ave asked curiously. Since Selene had been unfaithful and, as a man, he would have his needs, she couldn’t help but wonder why he hadn’t taken a mistress or a concubine yet.

Lucian was silent for a while before he said, "The life of a concubine and a mistress in our era is no different from that of a maid. The only thing a concubine gets is royal clothes and jewelry. I don’t want to keep someone I do not need and have to watch serve and annoy me when her presence is not needed," he remarked nonchalantly.

His own mother had been given to the Emperor as a concubine before Gina was conquered as a form of peace treaty to avoid any war, but later on, the Emperor had given her a position as his third consort when she was pregnant with Lucian. However, even that wasn’t enough to stop the Emperor from conquering and destroying Gina when it was said the kingdom was full of witches.

He had watched as his mother was mocked all the time for being brought as a concubine, then rumored to have used her beauty to charm the Emperor into giving her a title. Despite the title, she was still returned to the position of a concubine after she gave birth to the cursed prince and was abandoned in her quarters until her death.

"I have never seen this many stars in the sky in my world before," came Ave’s voice as she stared at the starry sky with countless shimmering stars, while also trying to drop the topic of concubines and why he didn’t have them, as for some odd reason, she couldn’t even imagine him having one while she was still here.

Lucian also followed her line of sight to the sky before he asked, "Are there no stars in the future, or what?"

Ave chuckled softly. "There are, but in the future, we have too many lights in the city for the stars to be this visible. We have skyscrapers and many tall buildings that make it almost impossible to watch the stars. Unless it’s an airplane light, no star has been this bright when I was there," she remarked quietly, and she heard Lucian’s curious voice.

"What is a skycreeper and an airplane?"

"Skyscraper," she corrected with a chuckle. "It’s a building, a very tall one that has..." She began to describe it for him, but noticing the deep frown on his face, like he couldn’t picture whatever she was describing, Ave sighed. "Don’t worry. When we get back, I will draw everything for you tomorrow and show you."

Then, as if realizing it, Lucian was out of his seat in a flash and looking around.

"What’s wrong?" Ave asked as she also stood to her feet.

"We have to go back," he said, looking around for Zane and the other guard, whom he found sitting on the other side with some kids who were putting on a show for them and making the two adults laugh like idiots. "It’s getting late, and the palace gates won’t be left open for long," he said.

Lucian couldn’t believe he’d allowed himself to relax so much that he had forgotten they were not inside the palace walls. When he had walked over to hand Ave water, he had come to tell her they should leave, but had sat with her instead.

Ave watched as Lucian made his way to the two sitting with the kids. Knowing they would soon be going back, she turned and walked up to Hugo and his wife to bid them farewell. After they bid farewell to each other, Ave turned to Hugo and handed him a seal she’d taken from Zane, which was used by servants and guards to pass into the palace gates.

"Take this. You will be allowed into the main palace and into the second prince’s palace tomorrow when you show the guards this," she told the man, who quickly took the seal and then fell to his knees in gratitude, his wife doing the same.

"Thank you, Your Highness! I shall repay your kindness with anything you want, and I will make sure I convince the others to stand with the second prince and make the request," Hugo cried.

Not long after Ave finished speaking to the couple and giving little Emily a gold coin along with her other siblings, she made her way to the road where Lucian and the others had prepared their horses and were waiting for her. She didn’t need to be told to know Lucian’s demeanor had softened towards the villagers, as he no longer looked at them with burning hatred, and she was glad she had at least achieved something from this outing today. One step at a time.

When Ave stood before Lucian, who she saw was preparing for her to climb his horse, she stepped back. "I want to ride alone," she said, pursing her lips, not wanting to sit close to him again.

Seeing that he was about to object, she quickly added, "We are not far from the palace gates. Let me ride on Zane’s horse like I did when we came here." She crossed her arms against her chest and looked down at her pocket when she thought she felt something move there but then dismissed it when Lucian said:

"All right. Zane, you can ride with Evan and give your horse to her," he ordered.

Zane frowned. "Your Highness, as a Princess, she is not supposed to be seen riding on a horse alone or—"

"I know. She wants to ride alone; let her. She will switch back to my horse before we enter the palace walls," he said with a firm voice that left no room for argument. And Zane watched him in disbelief, noticing how the prince was indulging her by allowing her to do as she pleased instead of cautioning her to amend to their lifestyle.

Lucian walked with Ave toward Zane’s horse instead of mounting his own. Ave looked at him over her shoulder with a frown. Why was he following her again? she wondered. But to her surprise, when she reached the horse and turned to tell him to go back to his horse, he bent down and, in one swift movement, placed her astride the horse.

Ave’s eyes widened as she hadn’t expected to be lifted like a doll by the prince, as if she weighed nothing. She was too shocked to even react until she felt his hands grab hers and place the reins in her hand, as if she were a child who couldn’t do it herself, before he cautioned, "Don’t speed too much; it’s late at night. I will be riding behind you, and you can switch to my horse when we get close to the walls."

Ave snapped back to her senses and looked down at him. "I’m not a baby, you know? I can ride perfectly fine, and you don’t have to ride behind me." She raised her chin. "I want to race with you at least back to the walls."

Lucian stared at her without saying anything. Then, after a while, he said, "As you wish, Milady." He went back to his horse, mounted it, and snapped his reins to race after hers, which had already sped off.

In no time, Lucian caught up to her and, before he sped past, he turned over his shoulder with a smirk that said she could never beat him in a race. Since he could see the palace walls from where they were, Lucian knew nothing could go wrong with her, so he sped up to wait for her where she’d switch back to his horse before they entered the palace walls.

Lucian reached the spot and stopped his horse to wait for Ave, but even after some time had passed, he didn’t see her horse, which had been right behind him earlier. He was about to go back when he saw her horse speeding towards the palace walls—only, Ave was not on it, and it was coming back alone. Lucian felt his heart drop in his chest.
