Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife -
Chapter 77: All men are the same
Chapter 77: All men are the same
Ave fell silent. If she said she wasn’t terrified, it would be a lie. It was impossible for her to be a witch. She didn’t just possess useless powers, but now she was a witch? The thought of it made her want to laugh, but she knew it was no joke. However, no matter what, she decided to heed Lucian’s advice and stay away from water. If she didn’t go close to it, no one would accuse her of being a witch because a ghost like figure was requesting for her body.
Ave didn’t speak again and walked absentmindedly behind Lucian. The next time she looked up, the sky had already darkened, and they’d reached the second prince’s palace. Her clothes had almost finished drying. Lucian had said they were taking a shortcut, but to her, it was the longest path she’d taken compared to the one they had been following earlier. Then it hit her.
Had he made them take the long path because he wanted her dress to dry? she thought as she glanced at his back while he walked into the gates with the guards bowing to them as they passed through. If Ave said she wasn’t touched by that gesture, it would be a lie. She couldn’t help but think he was a gentleman. He hadn’t only been walking ahead of her but had also made her walk until her dress was in good condition around her body.
As they entered the palace and he was about to walk into the south wing, Ave hurriedly followed after him. But he stopped as he sensed her following him toward his chamber and turned to her with a questioning look.
"And where do you think you are going?" he asked.
Ave jerked her head toward his chamber. "To our room. I thought you said I will stay in your chamber from now on?" she questioned, blinking innocently up at his narrowing eyes.
Lucian would be out of his mind to torture himself with her presence in his chambers again. He had to spend the night in Zane’s room last night because of her, and thinking about last night, the only memory that came to his mind was of her bathing in his pool. Though he’d said those words yesterday, it was because the wound had looked terrible, and...
The wound. He realized as he glanced down at her hand, which now had no bandage. He hadn’t paid attention to it this whole time, and now that he did, he reached out and took the hand he knew was injured into his, taking her by surprise as she tried to pull her hand back, but he held it firmly and gave her a warning look to stay still.
He glanced down at her palm where the wound had healed and left a small scar. A frown came to settle on Lucian’s face, as that was completely strange. Witches don’t have the ability to heal this fast.
"Oh, you are looking at my wound," Ave commented as she saw him looking down at her supposedly injured hand, which she’d forgotten about as it had healed. "It seems the medicine drink a maid brought to your chamber last night works wonders, because the wound healed by the time I woke up this morning," she said.
Lucian had been the one to bring the herb drink, and he knew what it was made of. It only helped with fast healing, but not this fast.
Ave felt him trace his finger around the small scar on her palm, and she felt a shudder go through her body at his touch. She quickly pulled her hand back from his, while trying to hide the color that rushed up her face, by walking ahead toward his room, only to feel him pull her arm back.
"You are not staying in my chamber; your wound has healed already. Go back to your room," he said with an emotionless voice that made Ave reverse her steps until she stood before him, where his eyes looked down at her, bored and impatient.
For some reason, Ave had enjoyed her sleep more in his chamber last night, not to mention his big bathing place that had been fun. But then, seeing the look in his eyes, she didn’t argue and decided to go back to her own room.
"Good night then," she said, knowing she wouldn’t be seeing him again for the rest of the evening. She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her.
"Aveline..." he called gently, causing her heart to skip a beat. She turned toward him.
"Yes?" Her voice sounded small to her own ears, as whenever he called her name, it always hit differently.
They stared at each other for a moment before he parted his lips and said, "I don’t want to see you ever again in my chamber from now on." He said this indifferently and turned on his heels, walking away, disappearing into the darkened part of the south wing and leaving Ave standing there, stunned.
The way he’d called her name, she’d almost thought he wanted to change his mind and invite her to stay in his chamber, but he’d called her back just to warn her to stay away from his chambers. Ave glared at the darkness before she huffed, "I don’t want to be in your room anyway, asshole," she muttered to herself and walked back toward her own room, feeling angry for no reason at all.
When she returned to her chamber and was taking off her damp dress, Lydia walked in, looking worried, as she’d been sent away along with the princesses earlier at the river and had not gotten the chance to make sure Ave was alright.
After the girl’s dramatic cry and asking countless times if her mistress was alright, she finally helped Ave bathe. However, as she was helping her bathe in the water, Ave couldn’t help but test something by dipping her head into the tub before coming back up to see if she’d see the ghost from earlier, but when she didn’t see anything, she sat back down on the step at the edge of the pool for Lydia to continue helping her wash her back.
"Did you drop something inside the bathing tub, Your Highness?" Lydia asked upon noticing how Ave had dipped herself into the water and came back up again.
"No, I was just checking for something," she replied. Yeah, she was being careful by checking under the tub if she’d see the ghost figures, but thank goodness they are not in the water. She was still finding it hard to believe that she was a witch. She couldn’t be, and maybe it was Selene, and Lucian didn’t know about her because they were not that close?
"Lydia," Ave called, and when the girl hummed in response, she asked, "Before my accident in that inn, do I have any more secrets I’m hiding from Lucian and everyone in the palace?"
Lydia’s hands stilled from rubbing the bathing oil on her back before she resumed, "Yes, Your Highness."
Ave was quick to turn in the water to face the girl, "What is that? My memories are still not good from the accident, can you tell me?"
Lydia hesitated while avoiding Ave’s eyes, and when Ave urged her to speak, Lydia said, "I... I cannot tell you, Your Highness, because I do not know. You have many secrets, but you don’t share them with me and write them down in that book you got as a gift from the third prince the first time he confessed his love for you."
A diary! Ave thought. A diary would be a good way of learning about what Selene knew and what she was hiding. "Where do I keep the book?" she asked.
Lydia shook her head, "I do not know, Your Highness. Whenever you finish writing in it, you send me out before you hide it."
Ave’s shoulders slumped at that. How was she supposed to find it now that Lydia had no idea where Selene kept it? Perhaps she could look around the room. With that thought, after she was done bathing and wore her night robe and also ate her dinner in her room, Ave began to search everywhere after Lydia left the room. She searched from the bedroom to the wardrobe and turned everything upside down, but no matter what, she couldn’t find it. After a while, she gave up and fell on the bed with a sigh.
"Where on earth could you be hiding your diary, Selene?" Ave muttered as she crawled up and laid down on the bed, hugging a pillow to her chest. But after contemplating many places she could hide it and deciding to check them tomorrow, she got the diary thought out of her mind.
However, with the diary thought out of her mind, came another thought that refused to leave her head no matter how much she tried. It was the thought of Lucian, and it consumed her head until she couldn’t help but welcome it to her mind.
The way his arm had wrapped around her in the river when he pulled her up, and how he had made them walk around the forest so her dress could dry up, not to mention the moment he had backed her up against that tree, and recalling it and his words, she felt her toes curl under the blanket.
’If you keep annoying me with your useless chatter, I’ll make sure you get busy doing something else with that running mouth of yours. Do you understand me?’ he had said to her, and recalling the words, even though not completely understanding what he had meant, made her feel an uncomfortable heat begin to settle in her lower abdomen, a feeling she had never felt before in the past and didn’t understand the cause of it now.
She tossed and turned on the bed, feeling annoyed, as whenever she closed her eyes, she kept seeing his annoying face flash into her mind. ’That bastard Lucian, why is he haunting my night now?’ she sat up absurdly and yanked at her hair in frustration.
But then, to get him off her mind, she laid down and buried his thoughts with thoughts of her life if she were to return to her time. She was going to write a book about everything she had experienced and learned in this past. Though she hadn’t learned that much, she was in the process of learning. She was going to make sure the princesses’ names went down in history, and their dance on the day of the ceremony would be recorded.
Though she hadn’t heard of Lucian’s name in real history before she came here, she would make sure his name was known. Even though he annoyed her more than anyone else, he deserved that much for saving her, not just from the river and from being beheaded. Though he was mean and annoying, she would admit he could be a gentleman sometimes. And he had the most handsome face she’d ever seen, the most enchanting eyes and addictive scent that made her toes curl, and a deep voice that—
Ave stopped herself short as she realized she had gone back to thinking about that annoying Lucian again. She gritted her teeth and turned to the other side of her bed, but yet, it was like sleep had deserted her tonight. Feeling the urge to drink water, she stood up and reached out for the jug at the nightstand, only to realize Lydia had forgotten to fill it up.
She sighed and took the jug, making her way out of the room. The halls and corridors were completely silent, with only the occasional faint chatter of the guards outside coming in. Ave walked to one of the mud pots of water kept close to the dining halls for drinking and filled up the jug. She was walking back to her room when she saw Lucian and Zane walking out toward the palace door. The hall lights were still on, so she could see them clearly and even heard Zane’s voice as he asked Lucian,
"Why do you suddenly want to go to the Courtesans House? You—"
"Don’t question me, just take me there," replied Lucian, as their voices faded away down the hall before Ave heard the sound of the front door opening and closing. She stood there for a moment. Courtesan House? Wasn’t that a term used for prostitutes in this era? she thought with a frown as realization dawned on her.
It turned out Lucian also snuck out at night to have affairs with prostitutes, she thought, with a feeling of displeasure and disappointment consuming her all of a sudden. But then, what else was she expecting? She wasn’t his wife, after all, and she was never going to take on a wife’s duty to a man she didn’t even like.
However, even though she thought that, she felt a little sting in her heart that made her curse at him for going out to find pleasure when he was a married man. "All men are the same after all," she muttered and made her way back to her chamber, this time falling asleep easily.
