Chapter 72: Day off

After Ave woke up, she waited in the room to see if Lucian would return as she wanted to ask him what sort of herb was that drink made of and also apologize for her slip of tongue last night, because her quest wasn’t to anger the prince but to heal his darkened heart and make him love her, but when she didn’t see him even after an hour, she made her way back to her room as it seemed he was still mad at her.

On her way back to her room, she found Lydia pacing worriedly outside the corridors of her room, but upon noticing her, the girl’s green eyes filled with tears of relief and she ran towards Ave. "Your Highness, I thought something bad had happened to you..." She cried with her palms covering her trembling lips, making Ave click her tongue as she glared playfully at the crying girl.

"Why do you always cry every time? Don’t you ever get tired of it, Lydia?" she asked as she pulled the girl into her embrace, knowing she must have been worried when she didn’t see her the whole of yesterday.

"I... I thought you got in trouble and were locked in the phoney cell by His Highness," Lydia cried out.

Ave sighed. Sometimes, she couldn’t help but think Selene was one of the luckiest women on earth. She had not just been removed from slavery and liked by the second prince, who, if she had the sense to stand by him, would have protected her from the Empress and done anything to give her back her freedom, but she also had someone like Lydia who would cry for her at the thought of her being in trouble.

Selene would have enjoyed her life if she wasn’t so blinded by her love for the third prince, and Ave couldn’t help the envy she felt for the woman as she hugged the crying Lydia. In the modern world, she had no one like Lydia to worry for her. She’d lived alone in a run-down apartment before her fame, where her loneliness had worsened, but she covered it up with the happiness she felt from having many supporting fans and receiving attention on the media.

There were days she’d stared at the night city of New York through her penthouse window while drinking her loneliness away and numbing her longing to have someone to care for her and wait for her return at home every time. Not even a single friend or family member had been there. She didn’t know where the feeling was coming from, but she really envied Selene, though not so much she’d want to give up her modern life to continue living her life. At this point, she didn’t know weather Selene’s soul was in the morden world or if it had been lost, so Ave must try to make sure she didn’t attach herself of any of the people here.

And so, she pushed away from the hug and beamed at Lydia while pushing away all thoughts of envy. "Now you see, nothing is wrong with me. I just spent the night in another room because I had a little accident, but I’m all fine. Come help me bathe and dress up," she said as she pulled the girl into the chamber with her.

After Ave finished with her morning bath and was looking for something to wear with Lydia, she tried to think of how to pass time today as Lucian may have already sent the princesses back like he said he would yesterday. Thinking about Lucian, she turned to Lydia.

"Have you seen the prince today?" she asked curiously, as she hadn’t seen even a glimpse of the man or perceived his intoxicating scent.

Lydia bobbed her head, "Yes. I saw him with Lord Zane leaving the palace in a hurry this morning on their horses. I heard from the other maids that the first prince had summoned all the soldiers to the training grounds early this morning. Rumors are spreading that the Pendragon soldiers will soon be going to war. Some say after the upcoming birthday ceremony." Lydia blabbered on with all the gossip she’d picked up from the others yesterday while she was looking around for her mistress.

Ave’s eyes widened, "War? What the hell, I hope the war isn’t like the ones in movies where innocent people would die and the lands will get burned and conquered?"

Though Lydia had no idea what a movie was, she understood the rest and nodded her head. "Many people die in wars, just like when we were in Gina. A lot of people were killed, but it is said that Valarie is different from Gina. It’s the biggest kingdom under Pendragon, with powerful soldiers that could match the soldiers here," Lydia informed her, as she knew the war would be more intense than when they were young. With the upcoming war, all the princes would be busy training for it while the Emperor’s birthday ceremony was being prepared by the women.

Ave fell silent for a moment before she asked, "Will Lucian be going to war as well?"

"Yes, he will. I heard the Emperor had announced that all the princes will be participating in the war to prove themselves instead of the yearly competition that took place on his birthday. This time, it will be the war."

Ave didn’t know why, but she didn’t like the sound of this war as a lot of innocent lives would be lost all because they had powers. But she didn’t think too much about it as it wasn’t decided yet and was just rumors. Who knows, they could change their minds before the time, and Lucian would surely not want to participate in a war to kill people because they had powers.

Dismissing that thought from her mind, she focused back on choosing her outfit. She picked a dress that didn’t need a corset as it was a flowing green dress with long sleeves and had an outer layer like a robe. Picking the dress from the wardrobe, she recalled the magical dress and felt a little bit dejected that she’d had to give it away.

"Do you want to wear this one?" Lydia asked as she watched Ave pick the green dress. When Ave nodded her head, Lydia turned around and pulled a weird-looking fabric from the wardrobe. "You have to wear this first, Your Highness."

Ave glanced at the white fabric she held out to her with a confused frown, then back at Lydia. "And what is this thing supposed to be?" she asked curiously.

Lydia’s face flushed at the question before she meekly replied, "It is the cloth worn around the chest when you won’t be using a corset."

Cloth worn around the chest? Was she referring to a bra? Ave thought as she took the fabric and turned it around in her hand before she shook her head. She’d be damned caught wearing this around her chest. However, she didn’t argue with Lydia as the girl had excused herself to give Ave privacy to wear the thing.

A few minutes later, after breakfast, Ave didn’t know what to do in the palace and walked outside to take a stroll around the neverending large palace property that held both Lucian’s palace and the main palace and other buildings which she hadn’t bothered to ask what they were for, only to be surprised by the royal carriage arriving through the gates. Her eyes brightened as she saw the three princesses begin to exit the carriage.

Ave hadn’t expected them to come as it was well past the time they usually arrived, and she hurried towards them. "I didn’t expect you guys to come," Ave said as she looked from the smiling elder princess to the twins.

"We thought to come and pay you a visit as brother Lucian had said you were still not feeling well when we saw him at the main palace in the morning, and our practice will continue tomorrow. Since all the princes have gone to the training grounds, we came here," Thalia beamed in excitement. She had been bored the whole time yesterday, and today wasn’t going well for any of them, who had started to get used to coming here to practice. They’d left the main palace when their brothers were busy preparing to leave for training.

"It’s good that you guys came; we can keep each other company and take today as a day off from our practice," Ave said.

"How is your health?" Thalia asked as she examined Ave from head to toe, not seeing anything that gave away that she had been sick.

"I feel wonderful now that you are here," she clapped, unable to hold her excitement.

"Then what shall we do if we won’t be learning our daily practice? Father’s birthday is in a week from now, and the guests will start arriving in three days," Celeste said.

Ave waved her hands in dismissal. "You guys have already mastered the steps, a day off shouldn’t hurt anyone. And don’t worry, I know a better place to pass the time, trust me," she said, wiggling her brows and causing the princesses to wonder what she was up to and what was this better place.
