Chapter 71: The greatest fucker

A few minutes later, Lucian stood before a door after leaving his chamber and knocked. It wasn’t long before the door opened, revealing Zane in his sleeping robe, looking a bit annoyed at being disturbed at this time of the night. However, the moment his eyes fell on Lucian, his annoyance disappeared, and he bowed slightly before asking,

"What brings you here, Your Highness?"

"Can’t I come to see you whenever I please?" Lucian asked as he pushed his way into Zane’s chamber. Zane, taken aback, wondered when Lucian had ever come to see him in his chamber. It was always Zane who visited Lucian when he had things to report or discuss. Though they were more like brothers due to the way the late third consort had treated Zane, he knew his boundaries and didn’t cross them.

Zane closed the door after Lucian let himself in without an invitation. Lucian walked to the bed, pulled off the first layer of the blanket along with one pillow, and threw them on the floor. He then spread the blanket on the floor.

"What are you doing?" Zane asked with a frown, watching as the prince made himself a sleeping place on the floor.

"Isn’t it obvious? I’m making a sleeping place," Lucian stated with a straight face, as if it were perfectly normal for a prince to make a sleeping place.

"I can see that, Your Highness, but why?" Zane asked, confused. Was the prince planning to spend the night in his chamber?

"Because I am spending the night in your room, Zane," Lucian replied indifferently, stating the obvious. After he was done spreading the blanket, he moved toward the bed, laid down, and then glanced at the stunned Zane. He jerked his head toward the floor. "You can sleep there."

"...!" Zane looked from the spread blanket to the bed. Without a word, he obediently walked toward the floor and laid down with a sigh. When they were younger, they had always shared a room like this—Lucian on the bed and Zane on a mattress beside him. Those were the days Zane cherished, and the memory made him smile faintly as he glanced up at the ceiling.

"What happened to your chamber that made you decide to come here tonight?" Zane asked curiously. This was the first night Lucian hadn’t suffered from the pain of the poison in the year he’d been married to Selene, all thanks to that imposter.

"There’s a big insect in my chamber that won’t allow me to sleep there tonight," Lucian remarked with a sigh. When he looked at Ave in the bathtub earlier, something had awakened in him—something primal that made him want to possess her in a way he knew a man wanted a woman. The feeling had come so suddenly that his blood had felt like it was boiling. He didn’t like that he was growing attracted to her when he didn’t even like her.

He had made the mistake of letting her stay in his chamber, but he’d correct that tomorrow by sending her back to her own room. For now, he couldn’t share a space with her when she caused him to react in such a way. The image of her figure involuntarily flashed to his mind and that alone was enough to make his body grow warm and rose something in him.

Perhaps it was because he hadn’t taken a woman to bed in years that was making him feel this way. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d taken a woman to bed or felt the urge to.

There were other rooms in his palace, but none were tidy enough, and he didn’t want to wait for the maids to clean one when he was only going to use it for tonight. So, he had decided to come to Zane’s room instead.

Zane replied with an "Oh, I see," realizing Lucian was referring to the imposter. "How does it feel to be free from the pain of the poison?" Zane asked.

Lucian was silent for a while. He had almost forgotten what a good night’s sleep felt like without the pain of that agonizing poison. He’d suffered through it for an entire year, and now that it was cured, he felt at ease. It was like a small weight had been lifted from the heavy burden he had carried for so long. He could now focus clearly on his goal without worrying about dying from the poison.

"It feels good to know I still have a long life ahead to take the throne," he replied calmly. The room was silent for a while before Zane spoke again.

"I heard from the report Prince Alden sent to the major generals that after the Emperor’s birthday ceremony, the war to conquer Valarie will begin. If it’s true, don’t you think the Emperor is going too far with this?"

Valarie was another kingdom like Gina, where people with extraordinary powers had recently been discovered. The king of Valarie was hiding these people from the Emperor and had even declared war on Pendragon if they were touched. Hiding people with powers considered forbidden was treason enough, but declaring war only escalated matters.

"Hmm, the Emperor is nothing but a puppet to the officials and the Empress. He gives orders to whatever his wife says. Valarie will be as good as gone soon, and there’s nothing any of us can do about it."

"Are you going to participate in the war?" Zane asked curiously.

Lucian sighed. "Yes. It is my duty as a soldier to follow the Emperor’s and the general’s commands. The war is unavoidable. I have no say in it when I’m just an exiled prince," he said indifferently as he stared at the ceiling. If his mother were still alive, she wouldn’t have liked that he was going to participate in killing people with the same powers as her own. She wouldn’t have supported conquering a people and bringing them back as slaves, just as Zane and many other children had been.

"That means we’ll be training at the camp tomorrow," Zane sighed softly. "And following Alden’s commands, who I know will make your life hell for what happened on the battlefield last time. If the Emperor were fair, you’d be given the title of General, not Alden. Alden is just a—"

"A fucker?" Lucian supplied with a small dark chuckle, but Zane was quick to shake his head and even sat up to disagree as he still believed fucker was warrior.

"No way in hell is he a fucker. You’re the fucker, Your Highness. You’ve been ever since the day you joined the military. You’ve killed more enemies than he has in wars. No one can be a greater fucker than—"

"Enough," Lucian cut him off with a displeased frown. He knew what that word meant now, and hearing Zane refer to him that way made him uncomfortable. He couldn’t believe that loose-mouthed woman had made it normal for people to use such bad word commonly.

Zane, however, thought Lucian was being modest. "I’m serious, Your Highness. You are the greater fu—"

"Say that word again, and I’ll break your teeth," Lucian warned in annoyance.

"What word?" Zane frowned, oblivious. "Do you mean fu—?"

Before he could finish, a pillow hit him square in the face, and Lucian’s authoritative voice came from the bed. "Go to sleep. We have training to do tomorrow." He turned his back on Zane, who raised his hand to throw the pillow back but stopped, realizing it was the prince and not someone else he could throw a pillow at.

Zane laid back down on the floor, closing his eyes, but then Lucian spoke again.

"Tell the stable guards to choose the most obedient mare for the princess tomorrow. I’ll give it to her when we’re back."

The next day, Ave woke up in Lucian’s chamber and stretched her arms above her head while she yawned. She had slept peacefully after having a relaxing hot bath in his large bathing pool that had soothed her muscles in a way she couldn’t pinpoint. Even though she had eaten a weird porridge she’d found on the table after her bath, and drank something that had a leafy taste to it, she didn’t mind because of how well-relaxed she felt now.

Judging from how the side of the other pillow looked smooth, it seemed Lucian hadn’t returned to his room after he’d angrily stormed out when she compared him to his half-brother, which was a terrible slip of the tongue.

Ave swung her legs off the bed and was about to stand up when her eyes fell on her hand, and a frown settled on her face. Last night, after her bath, she’d taken off the wet bandage as it felt uncomfortable and itchy and thought she’d change to another one today, but looking down at her palm now, the wound had healed, leaving behind a small scar that looked to be the size of thick thread.

Ave traced her fingers over it in wonderment. "That was fast," she thought, believing the leafy drink from last night must have worked some magic to heal it so quickly.
