Chapter 65: The difference between the future and the past
"Pain reliever?" Ave repeated with a frown of disbelief, as no pain reliever could work fast enough to numb the pain in her time. "Is it magical?" she asked curiously but received a glare from Lucian, who was now putting the empty bottles away.
"Very soon, you will find yourself being burned in the village for how you carelessly say the forbidden words even after I’ve warned you about it," he said nonchalantly as he stood up from the side of the bed.
Ave pursed her lips. "How will I get in trouble when there’s no one around but you and me?" she said in a matter-of-fact tone, causing Lucian to frown in disapproval.
"I don’t know how the place you come from works, but let me tell you this; here, you don’t know when someone will be listening to you and watching your movements until it is reported to the last person you expect to know about it. So watch your mouth at all times and trust no one, not even me."
Ave swallowed hard at that. She didn’t know if he was trying to scare her more or make her start being wary of everyone in the palace, but somehow, his words, along with Lydia’s own at the dining hall about not trusting anyone, were making her scared. In her own world, things like these didn’t matter. Talk about having powers, and you’d become a laughing stock.
If she didn’t trust him, then should she go and trust the Empress? Ave scoffed, as she knew the Empress was the last person she would trust. She had already placed her playing card on Lucian; it was only a matter of time before they’d learn to trust each other.
"You know," Ave said softly as she stared into the distance, "where I come from, none of your Empire’s rules matter. Though the future is not the safest place, it’s still better than here, where little things could cost you your head. We have the right to speak out of turn and act out of the ordinary. No one cares about what you say or do as long as it doesn’t harm anyone. The poor can look the rich in the eye, and nothing will happen. We can dress however we please, and no one will say anything. And most importantly, the ruler doesn’t get to choose himself but is chosen by the people, unlike here, where you all are fighting for the throne and who gets to sit on it next while being each other’s enemy."
A humorless laugh escaped Lucian’s mouth. "What sort of kingdom is that, with such loose rules? What is the king or Emperor doing while his people act however they please and even dare to choose who gets to rule them without being beheaded?" he asked, curious in spite of himself. No wonder she was so loose and ill-mannered; she’d come from a land where the ruler was useless on his throne.
"We don’t see it like that where I come from you know?" Ave said with a small glare in her eyes, thinking he was asking to make fun of her, but her glare disappeared when she saw the genuine curiosity in his burning gaze.
"Then how do you see it in your land?" he asked with an arched brow, almost not believing he was indulging in such an unbelievable topic with this imposter.
If she indeed came from the future and it was ruled like she claimed, then he wouldn’t want to be in such a world with loose rules. If the people got to choose their ruler and act the way they pleased, someone like him would have been executed a long time ago, given how much he was hated by the people of their lands.
"Where I come from, we no longer have kingdoms and Empires. We have different lands, which are called countries, and each country has its ruler who is known as a President, not a king or Emperor," she informed. "And the rulers cannot just kill or behead someone for committing a harmless mistake like talking out of turn. No matter how rich and famous you are, you will go to jail for killing someone."
Lucian frowned. "And what is jail?" he asked.
"Jail is just like a cell or dungeon. If you kill someone, you will end up there for the rest of your life," she said. It was high time he learned that her world was different from his and didn’t run like this. She wasn’t used to being careful about the words that left her mouth, nor was she used to the thought of being killed for saying or acting out of the ordinary.
When she was in 2024, she liked to always speak her mind and act the way she pleased. Though a lot of people, even before she stepped into the entertainment industry, thought she was mannerless, she didn’t care what they thought, as that was who she was and she wouldn’t change it for anything. She had grown up without a mother to caution her or her behavior and had acted on impulse in what she did.
Her stepmother was as good as useless, as all she did was add to her anger and rebellious nature. And now that she was thrust into this strange world, changing her nature would take time, or might never even happen.
Lucian, who heard her words about how some could get thrown in jail for killing someone, couldn’t help but ask, "Even if your king, who you call president, kills someone, would he be thrown in this cell?"
Ave smiled faintly, realizing how different their worlds were. "Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that. A president wouldn’t be thrown into jail right away, even if it became known that he committed such a crime. First, there would be a legal process—like a trial, but even before that, there could be something called impeachment, where they decide if he should be removed from his position. Only after he’s no longer president could he be prosecuted like any other person and possibly jailed."
Lucian found himself fascinated by such rules, even though he didn’t show it on his face. A ruler could be thrown into a cell for killing. That was something he would have liked out of all the absurd things she’d said about their world. He liked that one because, if it were the same in their world, it would be possible for the Emperor to pay for all the innocent lives he had taken in Gina, including his mother’s.
His mother had been secretly poisoned after rumors began to spread of her being a witch. The Emperor had neglected her in her residence even before her passing, without caring to pay her any visit when she lay on her deathbed. He even went as far as to give orders that no maids were to attend to that part of the palace. Lucian had watched as his mother suffered all day and night until she fell to her death.
She’d died with a bitter smile on her face, and the image of her would forever haunt him until the day he avenged her by taking the throne and making those who caused her death suffer, especially the Empress, who was a major suspect in poisoning her.
Ave noticed how the room temperature suddenly dropped as a cold shiver ran down her spine. Glancing up at the man standing before the bed, she noticed his murderous expression and clenched jaw. Gulping nervously, she wondered if she’d said something to upset him.
"Did I say something wrong?" Ave asked carefully, and she watched as his hardened expression immediately turned emotionless as he looked back at her, as if just realizing she was still there.
Clearing his throat as he realized he’d let himself get lost in his hate for the royals, he didn’t reply to her and walked to his clothes room to change into a new set of clean clothes but then decided to bathe instead.
Lucian wore his bathing robe and walked back to the woman on his bed who looked to be fighting off sleep now while holding her injured hand up in front of her, staring at it with drowsy eyes. The pain reliever always made one sleepy, and it was a surprise she was still awake at this moment.
"Lucian," Ave called when she felt his presence and looked up from her wound, but she was momentarily stunned and her heart skipped a beat to see him in just a bathing robe, held only by a belt at his waist, with his black hair cascading down his shoulders. He was looking at her with a displeased frown, probably because she had addressed him by his name again.
"What?" he asked when she didn’t speak after calling his name and was just staring at him. He was already getting fed up with warning her about addressing him by his name, and as long as she didn’t do it outside where others could hear, he would overlook her disrespect after what she had done for him tonight.
Ave cleared her throat and looked away from his sinfully handsome face. "Why do you think this happened? I mean, your injuries coming back to me and my blood healing you?" She couldn’t understand how all this was happening, and the more she didn’t want to be associated with any extraordinary powers that could get her into trouble, the more strange things kept happening. Lucian had said any extraordinary powers were forbidden in their world.
Lucian didn’t answer immediately. He also had no idea what had just happened. At first, when he realized she had swapped souls with his wife, he had thought her to be a white witch just like his mother, as white witches were the only ones good at hiding their powers. But after he realized she could take away his pain and could also kill and cure him, he wasn’t so sure what she was, and it seemed she also had no idea.
However, before he could look further into it, one thing was for certain: whatever she was, no one must know about it, as it would not only get her into trouble but also him.
"I don’t know how it happened or why, but whatever happened here must not be heard by anyone else. No one must know about your powers; you must keep it hidden," he warned.
Ave sighed in frustration at his words again. "I swear to you, I’m just a normal human in a modern world, I don’t have any powers. Perhaps your wife has and—"
"She doesn’t," he cut her off. "It’s coming from you."
Ave frowned in displeasure. "What kind of stupid power is this where I can heal someone and then end up getting their injuries? I don’t want it, not to mention it might get me killed." She muttered, not liking that such useless powers were now attached to her. Imagine someone got stabbed with a poisonous arrow, and then her own blood mistakenly touched the person just like it had with Lucian, and she ended up with the poison.
"Which is why you have to keep it hidden," Lucian said, though he doubted if that was the only thing she was capable of doing after what happened that day in his mother’s garden. However, he chose not to tell her there could be more to her powers. He didn’t know how someone who claimed to be from the future ended up here, but regardless, he would have to make sure she wouldn’t get herself killed.
Ave felt her eyes getting heavier, and a yawn escaped her mouth as she could barely stay awake. "Why am I so sleepy? I would have walked back to my room, but I feel too weak to stand. Can I lie down here on your bed?" she asked, already starting to make herself comfortable on his bed and using her good hand to pull the blanket from underneath her. However, she couldn’t seem to pull it and gave up.
Lucian had the urge to assist her but stood where he was, only watching her struggle until she gave up and laid awkwardly on top of the blanket with a sigh.
He watched her for a moment before he shook his head, turned on his heels, and headed to the bathing room. Lucian took his bath and put his robe back on while using a rag to dry his hair. He was still wiping his hair when he realized something and stopped.
His poison pain. He wasn’t close to Ave, but he couldn’t feel it either. Could it be that she’d healed that along with his wound? He thought with a deep frown on his face as he exited the bathroom.
However, the moment he walked back into his chamber, he could hear the loud snoring of the woman on his bed who had laid awkwardly with her leg now hanging off the side of his bed and her dress raised up to her thighs, revealing her stocking legs, which women were trained from childhood to hide from men they were not married to.
He watched her for a few silent moments before he walked up to the bed. Bending down, he pulled her leg back onto the bed and also adjusted her head properly on the pillow along with her dress before he pulled the blanket up to cover her body. Then he carefully picked up her injured hand and placed it on her stomach so she wouldn’t touch it in her sleep.
She would be in so much pain the next morning when the painkiller faded, he thought as he stared at her for a few moments before he left the chamber.
