Chapter 59: Take it away

Lucian’s eyes slightly widened as he watched the strange attire she wore transform into another strange one, but this time, a maroon dress that clung to her figure and emphasized her womanly body. The dress had no sleeves and left her shoulders bare while exposing an expanse of skin at the chest area, where it pushed up the swell of her breasts and left its milky skin exposed to the eyes.

Lucian’s eyes momentarily lingered at the part where the swell of her breasts was revealed before he cleared his throat and looked down at the rest of the dress, which clung to her waist and was tight from the waist to the knees, where the rest poured down with a train behind her.

In this day and age, women didn’t wear dresses like this as it would be considered disgraceful and might ruin their reputation. However, when he glanced back at the woman before him, she was beaming and wiggling her brows at him as if to show off.

That day when they’d left the main palace, he’d seen his mother’s favorite dress on her, but he hadn’t thought much about it as it was just a plain dress which he had believed had been burned with a few other things his mother owned. But it turned out there was more to it than even he knew about.

"See?" Ave said as she swirled around to show him the back view of her dress, where the back was also exposed, momentarily catching Lucian off guard before she turned back around and said, "I think your mother’s dress has some kind of magic to it that makes it transform when I think about a certain dress. I also think your late mother might have possessed some powers."

Lucian’s eyes flared at her words, and he grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him before he leaned slightly towards her ear and warned, "If anybody hears of this, I will kill you myself before you get yourself killed. Magic or anything that has to do with extraordinary powers is forbidden in our lands. If word got out that my mother had something like this in her possession, the Emperor wouldn’t only kill her offspring but everyone associated with him, including you."

His warning fell right on Ave’s ear, and she felt her throat run dry as she digested those words. Did that mean his mother had some kind of powers and had passed them to him as well? Was that why he could light a candle with a flick of his fingers?

Ave turned her head and looked into his flaring eyes before reassuring, "I am not going to tell anyone, not when you also know my secret."

Hearing that, he let go of her arm and took a step back from her before saying, "Good. Which is why you won’t be wearing that dress again, give it back to me now."

Ave’s eyes widened at the thought that he would take the dress away from her when she’d finally found something that would allow her to wear everything she once owned in the modern world. Wearing her dance joggers earlier had made her almost feel like she was back home, and she wouldn’t want to let it go now.

Crossing her arms around the dress, she shook her head, "No. I don’t want to give it to you. I promise to keep it safe and not let anyone else know about it. I will protect it with everything in me, but please don’t take it back." She looked up at him with what she believed was a pitiful expression and then pouted her lips in a way she saw girls do to a male when they wanted him to do what they wanted. Acting cute and pitiful had always worked on many men, but Lucian’s eyes only narrowed at her expression.

"What do you think you are doing with your face like that?" He questioned with a clueless expression as her expression looked like that of someone who had eaten something bitter and didn’t like the taste of it in their mouth.

"I’m trying to act cute so you’d change your mind, dummy!" Ave scoffed as she glared at him. Was he so blind he couldn’t see how cute she must have looked with that expression?

"Is that expression considered cute where you come from?" He asked. "And what’s ’dummy’ supposed to mean?" It seemed he really needed to start carrying a parchment around whenever he spoke to this woman so he could start keeping notes.

What did he mean by, ’was that expression considered cute where she comes from?’ Wasn’t it cute? Ave thought as she kept glaring at him and also told him the meaning of ’dummy,’ "Dummy means fool, dummy."

Lucian gritted his teeth in irritation, "What did I say about not addressing me with such disrespectful terms, jerk?" He also used the word she’d been using to insult her back. However, his beast, who he hadn’t heard from in a while and had gone mute for so long, howled in laughter along with the woman in front of him.

’Oh my fur, Lucian. You are such an embarrassing person to be around. You didn’t just call my woman a jerk to insult her because she called you a fool? You are indeed a fool.’

Lucian’s eyes hardened as he pushed back his beast and locked him back up in his mind, then glanced murderously at Ave, who was still wheezing with laughter to the point she fell back on the lounge chair behind her.

"Enough!" Lucian rebuked sternly, causing her laughter to immediately cease, but her eyes still held amusement as she glanced up at him from where she sat, fighting to hold back her laughter.

"Has anybody ever told you how adorable you are, Lucian?" She asked as her laughter began to subside. Ave didn’t know why, but she found him more amusing and adorable with each passing minute she got to know him more. Remembering how he’d called her a jerk made her want to laugh more, but the look on his face made her dare not do so again.

Lucian glared down at her, but he didn’t say anything to reprimand her for addressing him by his name or calling him adorable. He was everything but that. He was a man feared by all and a monster who could snap her tender neck and burn her with a flick of his fingers.

However, the fact that Ave wasn’t even afraid of him like Selene and everyone else who would tremble with one glare from him made him let go of her disrespect this time around, as that made him feel more human than the monster they painted him as. He hated to admit it, but he liked that she was so different from the woman he married. But then, her daring behavior was something that could kill her before her time if she didn’t tame it down.

Lucian gazed down at her from where he stood, and he found himself marveling at the sight of the dress she still wore. He’d never seen anything like it before, and even though he hated to admit it, it suited her so well he wanted to touch the attire and trace his hand around the strange design at the front below her bosom. Was she really from the future? He thought as he admired the attire again before his eyes moved back to her face, where her eyes were also looking at him.

Lucian cleared his throat as he realized she’d managed to distract him from their main topic and was about to speak again, but Ave’s soft voice broke the silence as she stood up and approached him.

"How’s your injured arm? Did you get it treated? Let me see if it’s getting worse." She said as she came to stand in front of him and reached out to pull down the sleeve of the loose shirt he wore, which immediately slid down his shoulder before he could stop it and revealed his arm where the wound was supposed to still be if he were a normal human, but had healed completely and left no scar behind.

Ave’s eyes narrowed as she looked down at the arm she’d thought was the injured one. She’d seen the sword pierce through his right upper arm, or was it the left? With that thought, she quickly pulled down the left side and was surprised to find no wound.

How was this possible? She’d seen the wound and the blood that had even stained her handkerchief when she’d tried to help him stop the bleeding.

Looking away from his arm, she looked up at his face, "W-where is the injury?" She asked, not caring how stupid the question sounded.

Lucian cleared his throat and raised his hand to pull up his shirt while moving Ave’s hand away from his arm. "It healed," he said curtly.

"How come it healed so quickly without even leaving a scar?" She asked with a confused frown. Was he an immortal, just like in movies, whose wounds healed quickly? Or was it part of the powers he possessed and was keeping a secret? She also recalled that night when he’d fallen down and she’d had to help him to his bed, she’d seen something strange appear on his arm before they disappeared.

Not just that, the rumors had said he’d fought in battles and got injured many times, but now that she thought of it, she’d seen his bare torso a few times, where it was as smooth as that of a baby. It seemed there was more to this prince than met the eye.

Ave was going to further question him about what he really was when his eyes hardened as they fell back on the dress she wore. When he spoke, there was no trace of the amusement nor the momentarily carefree man she’d glimpsed in him a while ago.

"My wounds are none of your concern, woman. Now take off that dress and hand it back to me, I can’t trust that you’ll keep it safe or protect my late mother’s secret," he said, his expression turning emotionless as he didn’t like any topic that had to do with his curse, nor was he willing to trust an imposter with something as important as that dress.

If the Empress got a whiff of the secret his mother had tried to hide, it would be a good opportunity for the Empress to kill him and Zane for it, including all of the staff in his palace and his soldiers.

Even though he could tell Ave was willing to protect the dress and keep the secret as he also had her secret, he wasn’t certain she wouldn’t give it away unintentionally with how careless she seemed to act. Not to mention if she were to tell it to those half-siblings of his she’d started to mingle with.

Ave quickly stepped away from him and shook her head firmly, "I am not giving you this dress. I want to keep it."

"It’s not your choice. You are going to give it back to me whether you like it or not," Lucian said calmly.

"Then you’d have to take it from me by force because I am not taking it off my body," Ave said firmly, her chin up in the air. If there was one thing she was certain of, it was that he wouldn’t use force to strip the dress away from her—or so she thought until he took her words as a challenge and said,

"Alright, I shall remove it from your body myself." He began to approach her with slow, intimidating steps that made Ave swallow hard and subconsciously walk backward until her back hit the vanity table.

The look on his face was so serious that she knew he would strip her naked if she didn’t give it back to him. But then how could she give it back when, for some reason, she felt attached to the dress? It felt like it was hers, and taking it away would be like taking away a part of her. She didn’t know where the feeling of possessiveness came from, but she would do anything to keep the dress with her.

When he kept walking towards her like a predator cornering its prey, Ave’s hand reached out for the dagger he’d kept earlier on the vanity table and pointed it nervously towards him. "Don’t come any closer, or I swear I won’t hesitate to stab you." She warned to keep him off, but he kept coming closer.

"I’d like to see you try," he said, his voice holding a hint of a challenge and daring her to stab him. Lucian wasn’t afraid of the dagger, as he knew he’d heal from any wound, and continued to walk toward her.

"I’m serious here. Don’t you dare try to touch me, or I’ll hurt you," she said again when he stood right in front of her now. But when he seemed hellbent on reaching out to take off her dress, Ave acted impulsively and tried to push him back. However, the dagger in her hand ended up stabbing the side of his stomach, and she froze as she heard him groan and blood began oozing out.
