Chapter 56: The magical dress
Chapter 56: The magical dress
Standing outside the palace as she watched the Princesses leave in their carriages, Ave waved them goodbye while ignoring all the strange looks she was receiving from the guards outside for the clothes she wore. Some of them had even stumbled over each other because they couldn’t take their eyes off what she was wearing.
Ave stood outside until the two carriages disappeared from her view and the gates were shut closed. Though she had initially thought the princesses would be hard to be around and teach a dance, she had never had the kind of fun she had today, even when she was in 2024. She had never had friends nor knew what it was like to have fun doing what you were doing.
Her life back then had been somewhat lonely and serious; she’d focused more on achieving her dreams and making her family pay for how they’d treated her. She’d wanted nothing but to become famous, so she’d overlooked all other things like being around the company of others.
The only people she was around were those she met on set and had to bond with to be able to play the role naturally with them. However, despite the fact that she’d never really experienced the real fun in having company, she would never exchange her modern life for this dangerous world.
Yeah, she indeed enjoyed her day together with the last people she thought she’d be having fun with, just like those two spoiled Princesses, who by the time she taught them the movements of the dance and had to hold their hands in some parts, had started to naturally laugh and converse with her, just like their elder sister.
Sighing, she glanced up at the setting sun before she turned back in and walked down the dim corridors. On her way back to her chamber, she glanced towards the South wing where Lucian’s chamber was and paused for a moment before she resumed walking back to her room as she noticed the guards were still standing at the corridor.
However, she was about to enter her chamber when Lydia hurried to tell her that dinner was ready. Ave was starving and had instructed the girl to tell her immediately when the food was ready.
Thus, instead of entering the chamber, she turned on her heels and headed to the dining hall where she’d personally arranged and set some lamps and candles the other day. However, she was excited about the dinner this time as she had a better meal in the morning, all thanks to that jerk who had taken pity on her.
Dinner must be as good as breakfast, she thought as she smiled to herself and headed towards the table, expecting to find different kinds of delicious meals, but to her disappointment, only a bowl of grain soup and a loaf of grain bread were kept on a tray on the table.
Ave’s footsteps immediately halted as she felt a blow to her stomach; she felt like throwing up at the thought of eating that bland thing they called soup. She was at a loss for words for a moment before she closed her eyes, opened them again, and then turned to Lydia.
"What the hell is that? I thought they said Lucian had ordered the kitchen cooks to make regular, normal meals. Why is that ugly thing still fed to me as dinner?" She asked calmly, using every bit of her willpower to stop herself from storming into that kitchen—which she was forbidden to enter because of the countless times Selene had poisoned him—and strangling those cooks for this nonsense bland meal.
Were they trying to mock her after the prince had lifted his strict rules? Didn’t they know that Lucian—
"His Highness ordered the cooks to resume the punishment of no cooking and no hot water this afternoon..." Lydia informed, causing Ave to laugh out loud in disbelief.
"Lucian instructed this? So he’s recovered enough to want to punish me again, for what this time? Because he thinks it was my fault he got pierced with a sword?" Ave scoffed in annoyance. She had been worried sick about that jerk the whole time she was having fun; his thoughts had been in the back of her mind, and she’d always fought the urge to run to his room and check up on him to make sure he was fine.
However, it seemed the jerk had recovered to the extent he’d been able to walk to the kitchen and order the cooks. Was he that petty to punish her for such a thing as cheering for him at the moment he was training? Did he want her to turn unhealthy and skinny before she’d go back home?
Ave had looked forward to eating something good, so she hadn’t gone to her chamber to bathe and had come here to eat first, only for him to disappoint her.
She wasn’t going to let this jerk off for this, and so she stormed off towards his chamber. However, no matter how hard she screamed for him to come out and face her as the guards stopped her, Lucian didn’t come out.
Stomping her feet in anger, she yelled out to the corridor, "Alright, don’t let me in. I hope your injury hurts so bad and gets infected tonight, asshole!" And then, glaring at the guards, she left and went back to the dining hall.
She was too hungry to ignore that unenticing soup, and if she allowed it to get cold, it would be unedible. Calming down her anger, she went and sat down on her chair while also sharing the meal with Lydia, who she’d heard never got to eat through this punishment because she was Selene’s maidservant. Whatever applied to her mistress would affect her as well.
Ave forced herself to finish up everything in her bowl, and after she was done, she sat there staring blankly at the candle lights as it flickered. She didn’t want to continue living like this and depending on some jerk before she’d be able to eat. She had to find another way to return to her time, apart from making that heartless man fall for her.
She doubted if his heart would ever open up and love again, not to mention she was already getting pissed off with him and his stupid mood swings. Last night when he hadn’t told the royals about her not being Selene and had helped her with her corset, she’d thought he was a nice guy who hid his kindness behind a cold facade and had thought it was going to be a piece of cake to make him love her.
But she doubted that now. She had to find her way back somehow.
"Your Highness, where did you get that strange attire from?" Came Lydia’s question as she set her bowl aside and looked at her mistress, who had never owned something as outrageous as what she was wearing now.
Ave got her head out of her thoughts and glanced at the girl. She had almost forgotten about how that dress had magically changed.
"Um, I had someone make it for me," she lied, not wanting to say it had magically changed as she also wasn’t sure how a plain blue dress could suddenly transform into something she was thinking about wearing.
Lydia’s brows frowned upon hearing that and was going to ask when was that, but Ave cut her off with another question. "By the way, the late third consort, before she passed away..." Ave looked around cautiously before she leaned in and asked, "Did she possess any magic?"
Lydia’s eyes widened. Why was it that her mistress kept saying the forbidden words that could cost her head?
Lydia looked around as well before she leaned in and whispered with a concerned frown on her face, "No. She didn’t. Though before she passed away, there were rumors that she possessed them, but no one could prove it as she’d passed the test years ago after Gina was known for having magic."
"What kind of test was that?" Ave asked curiously as she’d heard that Selene had also passed the test before she was enslaved. She needed to know because of what happened last night in that garden and then this dress. She didn’t want to be accused of things that weren’t her doing and get killed for it.
"We went through the test together along with some other children when we were brought here. Have you forgotten that as well?" Lydia asked with a frown.
Ave cleared her throat before she smiled hesitantly. "Well, you know I don’t recall everything after that accident. Can you tell me how the test was?"
Lydia hesitated for a moment before she reluctantly nodded her head, as she was afraid of speaking of magic.
"We were locked in a dark room with no windows, and some strange smoke was placed in the room along with us. It was said that witches hated the smoke, and if they were in disguise or trying to mask their powers, it would show. Among us on that day, many kids were discovered to be witches who didn’t even know and were executed immediately, while only a few of us tested negative, including you."
Ave looked thoughtful for a while. If Selene was tested negative and Lucian’s mother as well, then how the heck was it possible for that garden to magically bloom and then reveal her true appearance before it disappeared? Not to talk about the dress that belonged to Lucian’s mother, which seemed to contain magic.
"Have there been cases where the test was wrong?" Ave asked.
Lydia shook her head. "No, there hasn’t. But then I’ve heard rumors that only the Rosa witch could escape such a test, but then those were just rumors as the Rosa witch was a folktale told by the elders to children in Gina back then." She whispered, and then looking around again, she said, "Why are you suddenly curious and asking questions about these forbidden topics, Your Highness?"
Ave smiled and shook her head. "Nothing. I’m just curious to know since I’ve forgotten about a lot of things." She said, her expression looking a bit lost in thought. She’d heard the Empress talk about the Rosa powers in her dreams last night. But then was last night’s experience even a dream?
What was going on? Whatever this was, she didn’t want to be a part of it and end up being executed before she’d figured out a way back home.
Soon Lydia stood up and packed the bowls, but before she left, she said, "Your Highness, you have to be careful and don’t trust anyone in this palace, not even the people you think care about you." Then she left before Ave could question what she meant by that.
Ave sighed as she watched the maid retreat, then shrugged. She stood up, deciding to go back to her chamber and test the dress again to see how it works.
Ave walked absentmindedly back to her chamber, her mind lost in deep thought as she opened the door and closed it behind her. But as she took another step into the chamber, a hand flew from the side, grabbed her, and slammed her back against the wall before a sharp dagger was placed at her neck.
