Chapter 47: Taking off the corset

Chapter 47: Taking off the corset

Ave frowned upon hearing his words. How could she take off her corset when he was in the room with her? But then, if she didn’t take it off, she wouldn’t be able to enjoy tonight’s sleep as the damn thing was squeezing the breath out of her lungs.

Looking at his broad back, she bit down on her lips in hesitation, and then seeing how dark the room was, with the only light coming from a lamp that would soon extinguish itself, Ave sat up and decided to take it off, as he wouldn’t be able to see her even if he were to turn around and look.

But just to be certain, she said to his back, "Don’t turn around. I want to take my clothes off."

Perhaps it was her ears, but she thought she heard him snort before muttering, "There’s nothing there to see in a body that has been used."

"What? Did you say something?" Ave asked, only to be met with silence from the man, who completely ignored her as though he were sleeping.

Glaring at his back, she stood up and began to fumble with the weird tiny buttons on the dress that had taken Lydia almost forever to lock on the back of the dress. Ave huffed and struggled for almost ten minutes before she was out of the dress. Breathing heavily, she pulled down the sleeves of her chemise to get rid of the corset, but to her horror, she couldn’t reach behind her to loosen the corset strings.

She angrily stomped her feet on the wooden floor and groaned in frustration. She had gone through the trouble of taking off that complicated dress only to end up not being able to remove the corset!

Sleeping in such a thing would be almost impossible for someone like her who was used to sleeping naked under the blanket or in her loose nightdress. She couldn’t possibly go in search of a maid at this time of night, and she certainly couldn’t find someone else...

Her gaze slowly turned to the man on the bed. Without hesitation, she crawled back to the bed and crept toward him. Smiling nervously, she leaned down to peek at his face, but the room was too dark for her to see if he was asleep. Thus, she used her finger to poke his shoulder.

"Hey, are you asleep?" she whispered softly, but was met with silence.

Pursing her lips, she hesitantly reached out and shook his shoulders, yet he didn’t answer.

Lucian, who had been listening to how much she had been fumbling and struggling with her dress the whole time, held his breath when he felt her crawl up toward him. He gritted his teeth now that she kept shaking his shoulders to wake him. If he were indeed sleeping, he would have woken up with the way she had been groaning in frustration earlier, and now that she couldn’t tell he was purposely ignoring her, he felt slightly irritated.

"I won’t disturb you anymore, I just want you to help me with my corset strings. Lucian, you—Ahh!" She didn’t get to finish her words before the man she had thought was sleeping suddenly swirled around and grabbed her shoulders before pushing her back against the bed and pulling her hands above her head while he straddled her.

Ave gulped and anxiously looked up at his face, which looked every bit irritated. Their position made her heart skip a beat and a nerve twitch in her lower abdomen. Heat rose up to her neck. She had never lain under a man like this, and the way she was aware of his strong thighs on either side of her hips made her feel embarrassed and uncomfortable.

"What do you think you are doing?" she muttered, trying to wiggle her wrist from his hold, but he pinned them down on the mattress even more. She glared anxiously at him. "Lucian, you—"

"Call me by my name again and watch me cut off that tongue of yours," he warned slowly, his eyes boring down at her. "I have a strong dislike for women who talk too much and act like you do," he added in a thick whisper that made Ave’s heart rate increase.

Was he mad because she had addressed him by his name? What was the big deal there? she thought as she met his burning gaze. If she wasn’t wrong, Lucian would be around the same age as her real body, and yet he looked to be set on respect all the time. However, because she wanted him to get off her and help her, she sighed and nodded her head.

"Okay, I won’t address you by your name again, Your Royal Highness." She snickered softly. "How does that sound? Do you like it?"

Lucian couldn’t believe she could laugh when he was glaring down at her with the same expression he used on soldiers who would stumble over each other when they met his eyes. Yet this one could laugh and dare make a joke.

"Where in the world did you come from?" he found himself asking out loud before he could stop himself.

Ave’s laugh died down and her expression turned a bit sad. "I come from a world much better than this one, where calling each other by our names isn’t a big deal." She missed it so much and wished a miracle could happen and take her back there.

Thinking about the happiness she felt when her name was called on the award stage, she felt her heart tighten in a way that made it hard to breathe. She had thought her life would change at that moment and her dreams of being a celebrity were finally happening, but everything just had to change in the blink of an eye.

Ave felt a tear roll down her cheek as her throat constricted. "I miss my home so much." She cried out and turned her head to the side as if to hide the tears from the man above her, but she was thankful the room was dark.

"If you don’t want to stay here, why not go back the way you came, to whatever kingdom you come from? You brought yourself here with a spell, you can take yourself back with it, that is if you don’t get killed before using another spell." Lucian remarked indifferently, though he didn’t like the sight of her tears.

She glared at him with tear-filled eyes. "Do you think I would stay here for another moment if I could go back? I don’t know how I ended up here. Your jinx of a wife made a lot of mess, and I have to pay for it before I can return. And you are," she scoffed, "You starve me every day and make me bathe with cold water every morning. Do you think if I had some stupid magic you claim I have, I wouldn’t have left? I don’t want to stay as your wife or have anything to do with anyone here!" she cried out in frustration as she tried to push him off of her.

However, Lucian didn’t budge from her push, but his expression softened a little. He hated lies and when people deceived him, but judging from her tears and the way she spoke, Lucian could tell she was telling him the truth about not knowing how she’d swapped with Selene. He slightly felt guilty for the way he had punished her for all of Selene’s crimes.

Looking down at her now, as she had stopped struggling and was glaring at him, he slowly released her wrists. But before she could slip away from underneath him, he turned her around in one swift movement so she was now lying on her front with her back to him. She cursed at him and quickly tried to turn around, but to keep the stubborn woman down, he straddled her again.

"What do you think you are doing? Get off me!" Ave panicked when she felt his body behind her. She hadn’t meant to let out her frustration. She just didn’t like that he kept saying she had used magic. If she knew he would resort to raping her, or whatever he intended to do now by straddling her from behind, she wouldn’t have said anything.

"You..." Ave felt her heart tremble as she felt his cold hands come to rest on her shoulder blades as he pulled her chemise strings off. Then he said in a low voice that further stirred up her blood, "Calm down if you want me to help you with the corset strings."

The corset? Ave thought, as she could barely think straight with him behind her and his hands resting on her bare skin after he had moved her chemise down. But when she felt his fingers begin to loosen the strings of the corset, she allowed her tense muscles to relax. ’He was just going to help me with the corset,’ she assured herself so her heart would calm down.

Knowing now that he wasn’t about to do anything outrageous to her but help her, she didn’t struggle anymore. However, her calm mind allowed her to be aware of him again. His fingers were moving carefully, occasionally grazing her warm skin, which made her shiver slightly. His strong thighs straddling her did nothing to help her heightened senses.

The room suddenly felt hot as she waited for what seemed like forever for him to finish.

"I heard the Empress wants you to teach the princesses how to dance," came Lucian’s quiet voice. "You don’t have to do it. You can give her an excuse about not feeling well." He said in an attempt to distract himself from her scent and the feeling of her warm skin, and also to alleviate himself from the guilt of how he had treated her. Not to mention, he didn’t want any of his half-siblings in his palace as he knew the Empress had decided for his wife to teach them the dance in his palace for a reason.

Ave, whose face was now buried in a pillow that held his scent, heard his words. If he had told her this before the Empress assigned her to teach the Princesses to dance, she would have taken his advice and given an excuse, but now that she was already determined to make history by teaching the Princesses a dance she was good at and bringing Lucian close to his siblings, she wasn’t going to back down.

Teaching them something new would be another way for her to pass the time and entertain herself, and so she replied, "No, I want to do it. I mean, I know how to dance it." She lied. "I will teach them," she said with a smile, and at the same time, she felt Lucian’s weight lift off her back before he pushed her away to the other side of the bed and laid back down in his space.

"Do as you wish, but know that when you get into any trouble, I won’t have anything to do with it or you. I don’t know you." He then pulled the blanket back on and turned his back to her.

Ave stared at his back for a moment before she felt the corset slide down her torso, and she quickly grabbed it and tossed it away. She didn’t even realize he was done. Then she took off the weird thing they apparently used as a bra before pulling back her chemise sleeves.

Once she was done, she took her first relaxing breath of the night and laid back down, this time pulling the blanket over herself. "Thank you..." she muttered to the back of the prince, who didn’t even acknowledge her.

"You know what, Lucian," she said in a whisper. "I think you’re not that bad at all. You are__"

"Go to sleep," came his authoritative voice, which made Ave smile and yawn before she closed her eyes, only to be thrust into a nightmare that left her shaken.
