Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife -
Chapter 212: My wife
Chapter 212: My wife
Pushing herself off the bed, she shivered as the absence of the thick blankets made her remember the intense cold from last night and the memories of how her husband had not responded to her. She dismissed the thought as quickly as it came.
She opened the tent and was welcomed by the winter land where everything was white with the sky looking gloomy. The soldiers seemed to be packing their things while the royals sat before a fire where Harry was roasting meat, and Orion glared at him when he first handed Isolde a piece he’d carefully cut out.
"Don’t touch my sister, you fool!" Orion gritted as he hit away Harry’s hand when he reached out to adjust Isolde’s coat after giving her the piece of meat. Orion had noticed how the servant boy had been too familiar with his sister since this morning and he didn’t like it.
"Brother, stop it!" Isolde cried as she turned to glare at him, while Celeste looked deep in thought with an untouched piece of meat in her hand. "I wonder what is happening now in the palace and if mother will be fine..." She muttered to herself, ignoring her siblings who were barking at each other.
"We are wasting so much time in this spot!" came the hoarse voice of one of the men who were packing up their things from the side, pulling Ave’s attention to them. "I can’t believe we are still here because she hasn’t woken up. Can’t His Highness just wake her up? She has been sleeping way past morning for Heaven’s sake!"
"Will you shut up, Koa? She’s a woman and she can’t handle the hardship you were trained from a lad to do," said Evan, a soldier Ave had seen more with Lucian apart from Zane.
"Then explain to me why the hell the other women traveling with us were woken up earlier and not her? His Highness is giving her space to laze around, she’s not even a princess and is getting this treatment," grumbled the man named Koa, who, without a doubt, Ave knew didn’t like her. And the fact that Lucian hadn’t woken her up earlier made her not blame the man. She had caused them to stop last night and was now delaying the journey by sleeping in.
"Yeah, I must agree with Koa," said another guard named Oliver, who was tying up some bundles of things behind his horse. He was tall and very bulky, and he grumbled in displeasure. "She’s not a princess, and because of her laziness, we might risk being attacked here and losing our prince to the Empress’s men."
"She’s more than a princess," came Lucian’s displeased voice from behind Ave. She swirled around and saw him approaching with a fat roasted wild chicken on a stick in his hand. His face was a mask of displeasure as he stared at his men who were badmouthing her, and the moment they saw him, they all stopped what they were doing and turned to bow to him.
"Your Highness!" they greeted him in unison. Lucian didn’t acknowledge their greetings and glared daggers at them for the words they dared to speak and even allowed his wife to hear them. Holding the wild chicken he’d woken up early to hunt down in the deepest part of the forest where the snow wasn’t that much, for her, and he’d even roasted it in one hand, he rested his other hand on the small of her back as he addressed his men.
"I should have addressed this matter sooner, but it’s not too late to do that now. She is more than a princess because she is my wife, and I will not take any word of disrespect towards her lightly. If you disrespect her, you disrespect me, and you all know what happened to those who refused to obey me. Koa, Oliver, apologize to my wife for the words you spoke!" Lucian demanded coolly as he glared at the two guards who had called her lazy. He wasn’t about to tolerate any form of disobedience towards his wife from his own men who he had trained with from a boy.
Ave, who didn’t take their words to heart as she didn’t blame them because it was indeed her fault for delaying them, turned to Lucian and whispered to him, "There is no need for them to__"
"FORGIVE US FOR OUR INSOLENCE, YOUR HIGHNESS!" The two men fell down to their knees and bowed their heads until their foreheads were kissing the snowed ground towards Ave, who was startled by their loud voices and almost jumped out of her skin. Placing her hand on her chest as she hadn’t expected them to cry out like that, she waved her other hand and told them,
"Please get up. It is me who should apologize for delaying you guys. I am sorry for it, and I will make sure to keep up with you all!" She told them hurriedly. The other guards around the premises stared at Ave in disbelief. Though they didn’t know Selene personally as they were always away, the rumors they’d all heard about her had made them despise her for the way she treated their prince and other people.
But the fact that she was apologizing to the guards asking for her forgiveness made them all stare at her wide-eyed. And when she noticed the two men bowing didn’t get up to their feet or lift their heads, she went to them and pulled them by the arm. "It’s freezing, get up please."
Was this the same arrogant woman rumors had said cared about no one but herself? Most of them had come on this journey because they knew with the Emperor’s death, the Empress would want to kill the second prince first, and they had sworn to protect him and fight beside him until he got the throne. They had all looked disappointed when they saw he was bringing Selene with them, the same woman who had gone around ruining his name in every banquet that happened in the palace. However, seeing how she behaved now made them wonder if they judged her too soon from the rumors surrounding her.
The men dared not get up without Lucian’s orders, and when Lucian saw how his wife was holding their arms to help them up, he frowned in displeasure and walked up to her. He pulled her away from the men and glared down at them.
"Tell them to get up," Ave told him in a whisper, and though Lucian would have wanted them to remain like that until they were ready to leave, he grumbled, "Get your idiotic heads up before you freeze to death." Saying that, he pulled Ave towards the burning fire where the other royals were now standing as they watched and heard what was happening at the side.
They watched as Ave and Lucian approached with frowns on their faces. None of them had known the two had remarried again, and it came as a surprise to them now that they had it.
"You two are married again?!" Isolde exclaimed with a smile, but Lucian ignored her and pulled Ave, who nodded at her, to sit beside the fire.
"That’s great! You are now our sister-in-law again!" She clapped as she sat down and held her hands out to the fire like the rest.
"Brother Lucian, where are we going?" Orion asked after some moment of silence as he sat down and bit down on the piece of tasteless meat in his hand. He had been dragged along without being told where they were going, and though he had no objections, as the second prince was one of his favorite brothers. Furthermore, he knew had he stayed back, Caelen would easily kill him to get the throne and be the Emperor. He didn’t want to die for something he didn’t even want in the first place.
Just like their brother, Isolde and Celeste had no idea where they were going or why their half-brother was taking them with him. But because they had already accepted the fact that they were family, they weren’t worried and were only concerned about those they had left behind. Especially their mother. Thus, they watched him, waiting for him to answer Orion’s question about where they were going. But Lucian acted like he didn’t hear them and put all his attention on cutting the meat he’d gotten specially for Ave.
"Here, eat," he handed her a piece of the chicken meat he’d carefully cut, and she took it wordlessly and began to eat it while staring at him. Ave could tell and feel he cared and loved her from his actions and behavior. What she couldn’t understand was why he always put a distance between them when it came to being sexually intimate, and though she had been hurt last night and even felt stupid for what she had done, now she realized she would stop at nothing until she found out why he didn’t want to touch her and consummate their marriage. However, there were more important matters to worry about for now, like the answer to Orion’s question about where they were going.
When Lucian didn’t reply to Orion’s question and continued to cut his wife’s meat for her, Orion’s attention went to the meat instead. The meat he was eating was tasteless because that stupid Harry had roasted it, and for some reason, he didn’t like how the boy was paying too much attention to his sister. "Brother Lucian, can I get some of that chicken meat?" he asked as he salivated from how the fleshy meat was being torn with a small knife.
Without a second thought, Lucian replied as he looked at his half-brother sternly, "No. Make yourself useful and take your sisters to start preparing for our journey just like the others are doing."
Orion eyed the chicken before he nodded and stood up, but before he could lead his sisters away with Lydia, who had come to bring water to her mistress, Ave reached out and took the knife from Lucian. She cut from the fat meat and gave some to Orion and then to Lydia, who accepted it with a beaming smile and a thank you before they all left, leaving the two of them by the fire.
"Why are you staring at me like that? I gave them some because I can’t finish all of it alone," she muttered as she noticed how he was staring at her weirdly.
"But I only made it for you," he told her as he recalled how gluttonous she used to be when she first arrived, and a meat like this was nothing because she would devour it alone. However, now she was only eating little and had even shared it with the others until it was only a little piece remaining. He didn’t like how she wasn’t eating much.
"You don’t eat much lately; is something bothering you?" he asked quietly as he stared into her eyes, hoping whatever was bothering her had nothing to do with last night or the night before, or because she was worried about her safety in this world and wanting to go back to the future.
Mustering a genuine smile, Ave reached out and placed her hand against his and said, "It’s nothing. I just don’t have the appetite I used to have before. Have you eaten?" She asked as she hadn’t seen him consume anything. He couldn’t eat chicken; thus, she wondered if he had taken something else.
"I am not hungry. We should be on our way now," he told her as he put the knife away and was about to stand up, but she grabbed his hand and frowned. "Where are we going? And why am I in danger?" she asked the question.
Helping her to her feet by pulling her hands, Lucian said, "The Empress knows of your powers. She’s a night creature." He revealed this to her and waited for the information to sink in. Her eyes widened in disbelief.
"She’s a night creature? How is she living in the palace all this while with no one knowing?" Ave gasped in shocked disbelief. All this while, she had suspected the woman to be a witch, but it turned out she was worse than a witch. She was a night creature who now knew about her powers!
"I can’t believe she’d hidden that fact for all the years she’d been in Pendragon without anyone knowing. And now that the Emperor is dead, there is no one to take action against her unless I take the throne from her. And now that she knows about you, she’ll stop at nothing until she gets you," he said as he stroked her arm when he noticed the worried look on her face. Then he continued,
"She made an announcement this morning, which was delivered to me through a trusted source. She announced that whichever kingdom welcomes us will be taken as an enemy by Pendragon and would be destroyed," he said grimly, wishing he’d confronted the Empress matter sooner when the Emperor was still alive and discovered her secret before everything turned out this way.
"Then we have no place to go..." Ave muttered softly with a frown.
"We have one. Nazia. They offered us protection," he told her, but that made Ave’s frown deepen.
"Just like that? I mean, without asking for anything in return?" She’d heard so much about Nazia when Lucian had once sparred with their prince. She’d even studied books about them and the other kingdoms when Lucian was away, spending her time in the library going through random books. Nazia people were said to be greedy and heartless, and they were known for keeping to themselves, which Ave had thought was mysterious with how they never even mingled with anyone, even when they were in Pendragon.
And the fact that they were willing to offer them refuge, which would mean going against the Empress, made her have a bad feeling that they would request something in return for this.
"They have so much to gain if they give us refuge and assist me in planning how to conquer the Empire from the Empress. There is more about Nazia many do not know, and I will tell you everything when it’s the right time. For now, we best be on our way first." He caressed her cheeks before he found her hand and led her to their horse after fixing her coat and making sure she was well protected from the cold.
This time when they continued on their journey, Lucian didn’t speed like he did when they first started the journey. At first, Ave didn’t realize how slow he was moving until she saw most of the soldiers were riding far in front while they were left behind.
"I like the speed much better, Lucian. Speed it up, I can’t wait to see what’s so special about Nazia!" she urged him as she tightened her arms around him.
"Are you certain?" he asked to confirm, and when she said yes, he snapped the reins, and the horse began to move at lightning speed.
