Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife -
Chapter 207: After supper
Chapter 207: After supper
Ave and Lucian finished eating supper, and they went back to their room again, and the air turned awkward.
They’d sat opposite each other in the dining hall, eating different meals. A servant in the kitchen had hurriedly prepared a simple porridge for Ave, as she couldn’t stomach her own cooking—not after it had gone cold. Despite her efforts to convince her stubborn husband to eat something else, he insisted on having the cold food. He even asked her what to pair with what and requested that she serve it to him on his plate as he wasn’t familiar with the modern dishes.
She had watched him devour the food she cooked without a care in the world that it had turned cold and probably tasteless. She had never seen him eat this much since the day she had come to know him. His head was bent down over his plate as he ate from each and every one of the plates she passed him from across the table like he didn’t want to miss any one of them.
At first, she thought he wouldn’t be able to finish them, but to her surprise, he consumed every one of them and even licked the tip of his fingers that had sugar serum from the dessert she’d made and gave him to try after he was done. He looked up at her after he was done and smiled, "The most delicious food I’ve ever eaten, really." He licked his lips and reached out and took her cup of water, which she had been drinking from, and drank from it as well.
Ave had been at a loss for words when she stared down at the empty bowls on the table and then at her husband, who was grinning at her. Was her cooking that amazing that he’d finished everything, or had he just eaten it so she wouldn’t feel bad?
"Walk with me," he had told her after they were done eating, to help digest their supper. As they walked through the hallways and passed by the library door, Ave thought to ask him a question that had come to her mind at that moment.
"Lucian?" she called his name as they walked hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder.
"Hmm?" He looked at her with a tender gaze.
Ave blushed under his warm expression, which always made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. His gaze always seemed to be one of admiration, as if he were staring at the most precious thing. Pursing her lips, she looked away and ahead as she posed her question.
"I wanted to ask if I can get a book where I can study magic. I want to know what I can do with my powers and learn to use them properly," she told him.
A frown settled on Lucian’s face as his footsteps paused, causing her to stop as well. He turned fully to her and held her shoulders as he spoke in a serious tone.
"You are never to use your powers. My mother sent you away years ago to keep you safe from the powers you possess and what they could do to you. Using them would only draw those who seek them to you. The night creatures are your greatest enemies, Aveline. With the Rosa powers, they could do more harm than you can imagine—all they need is to get a hold of you. Don’t try to unseal what was cast away to protect you."
He raised a hand and gently stroked her hair as he noticed the frown that came to settle on her face.
Lucian would never allow her to risk her life by using her powers. He had observed that the more she used them, the more she unlocked dangerous pathways—such as the world of the night creatures. Knowing how stubborn she was, he gazed into her eyes and said,
"Promise me you will never use them again."
Ave remained silent for a while. She didn’t want to make a promise she couldn’t keep, especially as she was contemplating healing Alden for Thalia’s sake. But realizing he was right and that she needed to listen for her own good, she nodded. "I promise, but I can’t keep that promise if it’s to save you someday by using my powers."
She pouted, placing her hands on his chest. He smirked.
"Don’t worry. I’ll make sure never to be in a situation where you’ll need to use your powers. Keep them hidden, and no one will ever find out you possess the Rosa magic."
He leaned down, kissed her head, and then they resumed their stroll around the palace.
Clearing her throat now that they had returned to their room after walking around a bit to digest their food, Ave stared at her husband, who, since they’d come back, hadn’t come to the bed and stood by the window, looking out at the sky through the window with his back to her. She had thought after they were done eating, they would resume where they had stopped when he went to the bathing room.
Though she had known something was bothering him and that something wasn’t right when his body had burned like that earlier, she had thought it wouldn’t stop him from consummating their marriage tonight when she had felt how aroused he was when he’d lain atop of her when they were kissing on the floor.
She knew she had put him off many times in the past when they kissed and he’d helped her find release. She’d thought he wouldn’t hesitate now that she was willing. She had sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for him to make a move again, but when he didn’t, she had changed her magic dress into comfortable pajamas of pants and a shirt and climbed into the bed and laid down, unable to sleep as she tried to think of many possibilities that were making him not make a move again.
Did she do something to turn him off earlier? Was he still feeling guilty about how he’d unintentionally hurt her? Just so she could assure him that the wound hadn’t been a big deal, she had intentionally raised her dress when they first came back into the room and he asked about the stab wound in her stomach to show him it had healed. He had been surprised by her quick healing and even traced his fingers against the scar.
"Your powers come with healing faster than normal," he’d whispered softly. However, when she raised the dress higher with the intention to show him that, just like that wound, the cut on her chest would also heal, he’d looked away from her so quickly, like he didn’t want to see her body. That was when he turned to the window and stood there until now without saying a word.
Ave didn’t know what to think of his actions. She had never been with a man, and nor was she experienced in any of these to know what she must have been doing wrong to make him put a sudden distance between them. They had been fine earlier until he turned away and acted like she wasn’t in the room.
She felt tears burn the back of her eyes as she couldn’t seem to think of any possibilities other than the fact that he didn’t want to touch her again, properly because he must have been reminded that her body had been touched by that bastard Caelan because of Selene. Selene had misused her body with that disgusting prince and even aborted a child. It wouldn’t be a surprise, with the mentality of the ancient people, that he would feel turned off with that thought.
A woman was to be a virgin on the night she consummated her marriage with her husband, and though Ave was, her body wasn’t, all thanks to that little bitch Selene. It wouldn’t have mattered to a man in the modern world, but she was certain it would to any man in this era, especially Lucian, who despised his half-brother more than anything. Touching his wife and knowing she had been touched by the person he hated most had put him off.
If not, why was he still standing there when she was willing to be a wife to him? Swallowing the lump in her throat, Ave closed her eyes and tried to force herself to sleep rather than dwell on the thoughts of why he wasn’t coming to bed. She curled up and held back the bubbling emotions in her chest and fell asleep with a heavy heart that was filled with uncertainty.
Lucian, on the other hand, dared not to approach the bed until he was certain she was sleeping and her breathing had turned steady. He turned his head back towards the bed and noticed she had curled up into a protective ball again, without pulling the blanket over her body and was sleeping. He felt his heart constrict as he stared at her sleeping form.
Walking up to the bed, Lucian took off his shoes and climbed into the bed next to her. Being careful not to wake her, he pulled the blanket from underneath her body and draped it over both their bodies as he laid down on the same pillow as the one she was using to be close to her. Pressing a lingering kiss on her fragrant hair, he laid his head down.
He knew he would be torturing himself more than he should be doing, but he carefully wrapped his arm around her waist and slid his hand into her shirt and laid his palm against her breast and draped his leg over her body under the sheets before he sighed and closed his eyes.
