Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife -
Chapter 201: Healed
Chapter 201: Healed
Ave woke up alone on the bed the next morning, and she frowned in displeasure as she sat up and found the space beside her empty and cold. She was certain they had slept together the night before. She knew it was unlike Lucian to sleep in in the morning, but she had hoped he would this time as he looked so tired. He needed to catch up on all the sleepless nights he must have had on the battlefield, and judging from the brightness and the bird songs outside the window, she could tell it was still early.
Sighing silently, she moved to stand up from the bed to look for him, but the moment she stood, a rush of throbbing headache made her sit back on the edge. No doubt she needed more sleep as well; for the past weeks he was gone, she couldn’t recall a night she slept without staring blankly at the ceiling for hours, thinking and worrying about him and his well-being. Now that he was back, she needed to make sure she took her duty as his wife seriously and taught him to rest properly and eat on time.
When it came to himself, he always seemed neglectful of his health. Sitting down for some time for the headache to go down, Ave got up again, this time slowly. She looked down and noticed she was wearing a brown nightdress, which Lucian must have put on her last night, and she smiled. She reached for a robe at the side of the bed and wore it as the weather was cold. However, as she made her way towards the door to look if Lucian was anywhere around so she could bring him back to bed to sleep some more, she froze at the entrance as Madeline’s dead body suddenly appeared right before her eyes.
The body lay there at the entrance with a broken head and blood all around it; however, her olive eyes, which were open, stared straight at Ave. Though she was dead, her mouth moved as she said, "You killed me... you’re a killer... a murderer!"
Ave felt her blood run cold as she stared at the dead body while moving backward. However, right before her eyes, the body disappeared as someone opened the door of the room and stepped inside. She was hallucinating, she realized dreadfully. For a moment, she thought it was Lucian who had entered and was about to sigh in relief at the fact that he was here, but when she looked up and found that it was Zane, she looked a bit disappointed.
"Good morning, my lady," he bowed his head when he noticed the disappointed look on her pale face. She looked like she had seen a ghost before he entered, and then the disappointed look. He had knocked three times, and when there was no response, he had entered only to find her standing before the door.
"Are you all right?" he asked as he raised his head to look at her face that now looked calm; however, the paleness didn’t go away. She was gripping the sides of her dress as she stared at him.
"Where is Lucian?" she asked instead of answering his question, and Zane frowned at the way she was still addressing him by his name. Not even married couples called their husband’s name, not to mention she was addressing her husband, who was a prince, by his name. However, that was none of his business; she just couldn’t fail to amuse him with her boldness.
"His Highness was summoned to the main palace at dawn by the Emperor. He is still there now," he informed her, watching as a look of worry crossed her face.
"Is everything all right? I mean, why was he summoned? Is he in some kind of trouble?" she asked, voicing the questions that went through her head at the thought that the Emperor had summoned him so early when he should be resting after fighting their war for them. Couldn’t the Emperor allow him to at least have a good sleep? Why would he call him so early? Not unless Madeline’s absence had been known and Lucian was being called there for questioning. What if he was framed for her absence like it happened in most movies and he got punished for something he didn’t do?
Zane could read the worry on her face even before she voiced it, thus, he quickly assured her, "His Highness is not in trouble. He was called to take over the execution ceremony," he told her, but Ave frowned in confusion.
"Execution ceremony? You mean killing the captives that turned out to be witches after the test?" Her eyes widened when Zane nodded.
"Yes. The first prince has always been in charge of things like that since he came of age. However, now that he is unconscious, the Emperor has summoned His Highness to do it. But from what I have heard, His Highness has refused to do the beheading himself and only agreed to inspect the process."
Ave sighed in relief after hearing that. She couldn’t imagine Lucian killing the innocent white witches after battling the dark ones in war. "Won’t the Emperor suspect him when he refused to behead them?" she asked curiously.
"Well, he didn’t actually refuse. He told the Emperor he wouldn’t take on the first prince’s duty for him; he would only go so far as to inspect and nothing more. That way, no one would link his refusal to anything suspicious. Because if a white witch kills another white witch, they bring natural damnation upon themselves—a belief known by everyone in Gina. Thus, His Highness will try to avoid carrying out the beheading himself." He watched as a look of understanding crossed her face, then continued speaking.
"By the way, I came here to inform you that everyone is expected to be at the execution center as per tradition, and His Highness wants you to come out there as well, or someone might accuse you of being a witch if you can’t watch and find pleasure in the witches’ death."
Ave felt her throat go dry and her stomach knotted. She had seen too much blood to last her a lifetime, and the last thing she wanted now was to watch innocent people get beheaded. She knew Lucian wouldn’t want to subject her to the execution center if he didn’t think it was important for her to be there.
"What will happen if I don’t go?" she asked him curiously.
"This morning, Princess Madeline and the head maid Catherine have been announced missing, and everyone in the main palace is tense. They blame it on a witch, and the guests are being tested by the Emperor’s orders. If you fail to be present at the center, you will fall as another suspected witch. It was said witches find it difficult to watch their kind suffer as they consider each other sisters and brothers. You not being there will make someone point fingers at you; that’s why His Highness wants you to come, at least to stand where the royals will see you and not the witches."
Though Lucian had only told Zane not to allow her to go to the main palace because he wasn’t there in case she came across Edward, now that Lucian was back and there, he told Zane to bring her. Edward wouldn’t be able to harm her in the palace even though he would be surprised that she wasn’t killed by the assassins.
Ave absentmindedly nodded her head, "All right. I will get ready and meet you outside," she told him and turned to head to the bathing room. However, Zane spoke up again.
"His Highness also said you are to eat before coming. The kitchen cook has prepared all your favorites, and Prince Lucian told me to say this to you..." Zane cleared his voice to make it sound like Lucian’s as Ave stared at him with a confused frown. "’If you do not finish at least a quarter of what is made for you this morning, my wife, I will have no choice but to eat a chicken dish with you tonight. Do me a favor and eat before you come out,’" Zane relayed the message exactly as it was told to him, and he watched as the lady broke into a smile and then a hearty laughter that rang in the room and made him scratch the back of his head in embarrassment as he would never have done this had Lucian not said it was an order.
"You sound so much like my husband just now; the voice was so in check. You’d do well as a voice actor!" She gave him a thumbs-up, momentarily forgetting her fears and dread of being in the execution center as she laughed for the first time in weeks.
Zane looked taken aback by her words, but he didn’t ask her what she meant by them and smiled faintly before saying, "I will be waiting for you outside. Meet me there once you are done eating, and please, My Lady, eat a lot because His Highness’s antidote for his... what was that word again?" He looked thoughtful for a while before he recalled, "Allergies, is over. He won’t hesitate to eat something harmful for your sake, and I hope you will avoid that from happening." He said this with a seriousness in his voice that wasn’t in his hazel eyes before he bowed and left the room.
Ave couldn’t help the smile that still lingered on her face even after Zane left her to get ready. She was glad Lucian had Zane, apart from her, to care for him, and she couldn’t help but begin to like Zane as a friend with each passing day. It was nice to have someone like him around. He had made her smile this morning despite the unease she was feeling.
She didn’t know how she would react among the royals today after killing one yesterday. Sighing, she went into the bathroom, but when she passed by the mirror, her feet paused, and she looked at the reflection that stared back at her. It was still hard to believe that this was her true form, her real body.
It would take time before she could adjust to this fact completely, as her enemy in the future had looked just like this. However, for the sake of Lucian, she seemed to be accepting everything more quickly than she would have if he weren’t in her life. He was the reason she was going to let go of everything she had known as home and had worked hard to achieve. She was willing to stand with him even if it meant starting fresh here and adapting to the world and its sick rules.
With her husband by her side, she would be able to get everything right and forget about the life she had lived for twenty-four years. Rome wasn’t built in a day; it might take time, but she would adjust to it. And she would start by treating this body as she was supposed to, without constantly thinking that it wasn’t hers.
Since Lucian didn’t allow any maid, not even Lydia, into his room apart from Zane, Ave was left to bathe herself in the pool where hot water was already set for her. Winter was approaching, and the weather was turning colder, so the water was steaming hot. She was about to step into the water when she thought to remove the bandage around her waist, as she couldn’t feel the pain of her wound. To her surprise, when she removed the bandage, the wound had closed up and turned into a small scar on her side.
Tracing her fingers over it, she frowned upon the quick healing. She could have sworn it wasn’t an injury she’d sustained just last night, as it looked fully healed. Did her powers also come with quick healing? Ave wondered as she got into the water. What else could she do with it?
