Chapter 200: "Come to me."

Ave waited for him to say he was tired so she could take over, but that never happened, because in no time, he had finished digging the hole to the level they needed it to be. Now that she got the chance to look at him as he worked, he looked even more exhausted, and he dragged the body and put it into the hole without needing her help. He should be resting in his room now, but she had troubled him to help her get rid of a body.

Without calling her to take over, he moved the mud and soil back into the hole to cover the body. When he was done, he stood over the grave and covered it with dried leaves to hide the dampness and signs of digging. Done with that, he took a deep breath before he glanced at her with a smile, "All done."

Wordlessly, Ave retrieved her handkerchief from her dress pocket and approached him. She stood on the tips of her toes and used her fingers to move his hair back, away from his sweaty forehead, before she used her handkerchief to dab at the perspiration on his forehead and moved it down to his neck, all the while he watched her with a tender look on his face.

"Shall we go home now?" he asked her as he took her hand when she was done wiping away his sweat. He would have never taken the trouble to bury anyone’s body, as he usually burned them, but because of his wife, he had done so if it would make her feel less guilty about it.

Ave nodded her head. "Let’s go home," she answered with a faint smile as her eyes wandered briefly towards the grave and then back at her husband, who was looking at her closely. She just hoped no one would ever find out she had killed the princess. It was a miracle no one had noticed yet that she was missing, and Ave hoped they wouldn’t have any reason to suspect her, or else...

"Lucian!" Ave gasped when she was suddenly lifted off her feet and carried bridal style in his arms. She automatically wrapped her arms around his neck and looked at him. "I can walk by myself," she protested as she could tell he was more exhausted than she was.

"I know, but I feel like carrying you." He looked down at her with a boyish grin that disarmed her from insisting he put her down. She sighed and leaned her head against his shoulder.

"You feel lighter than the last time I carried you, my love. You haven’t been eating properly, have you?" He frowned down at her in displeasure as he could tell she hadn’t been eating properly for the past few days.

"Food was the last thing on my mind when you didn’t even bother to send me another letter after you left for the war. I was too worried to stomach anything..." she muttered as a yawn escaped her lips, and she closed her heavy eyelids to rest her eyes for some time. "I am sleepy; if I fall asleep in your arms, wake me up so I won’t burden you further..." she told him in a small voice that mirrored her exhaustion.

"You’d never burden me," he whispered softly as he looked down at her peaceful-looking face, her long lashes casting delicate shadows over her cheeks. And in no time, Lucian heard her light snoring as her weight grew a bit heavier in his arms. She had fallen asleep, he thought with a small smile as he adjusted his arms around her and pulled her even closer to him. However, he had no heart to wake her up like she said he should. She looked so peaceful and delicate in his arms that he would try his best to take her back without disturbing her sleep.

Lucian reached his palace when the palace clock tower struck two o’clock in the morning. When he entered, he was surprised to see a restless-looking Zane pacing the grounds, occasionally gripping his hair as if he were frustrated and worried about something. Nonetheless, the moment he turned and noticed Lucian approaching with the sleeping Ave in his arms, he let out an audible sound of relief as he ran to meet them halfway to the palace entrance.

"Your Highness, I’m glad you’re back safely!" he exclaimed, a small smile breaking across his lips as he looked down at the sleeping woman in the prince’s arms. "You can’t believe how worried I was when I couldn’t find her anywhere inside the palace. She sneaked out without my knowledge, and_" Zane trailed off when Lucian glared at him and hushed him as the woman in his arms suddenly stirred, Zane’s voice disturbing her sleep.

"Lower your voice; you’ll wake my wife," Lucian warned as he rocked her in his arms like a child. When she relaxed and fell back to sleep, he glared at Zane, who was watching him in wonderment as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, and without another word, Lucian resumed walking into the palace.

"Where did you find her?" Zane asked in a hushed whisper this time as he followed behind him. It was no longer surprising to know or to see Lucian acting differently when it came to the woman he held in his arms. Zane had come to accept the strange fact that his friend was officially becoming a wife’s slave. However, what bothered him was the fact that he had been concerned about the woman the whole day and had sent men to look around for her, but it was as if she had disappeared.

When he heard that the war army was back in the evening and that Lucian was alright, he had not only been worried but scared that he would finally lose his head for not keeping a close eye on the prince’s wife when he was gone. He would have stayed outside the door of Lucian’s chamber if he wasn’t trying to escape from her constant questions about Lucian’s return. And now he couldn’t help but wonder where Lucian had found her when he was unable to find her anywhere.

Lucian didn’t reply to Zane’s words until he was in the corridor of his chamber, where he knew no one would hear his words. "She was in the main palace. She killed Princess Madeline in self-defense." He said the words nonchalantly as he opened the door of his room and walked in with his wife, followed by a bewildered Zane who looked taken aback.

"She killed a royal?" he repeated in disbelief as he closed the door behind him and watched as Lucian gently and meticulously placed her down on the bed before he moved to take off her shoes, then hummed to Zane.

"Hmm."

"Nobody will care that she killed her to defend herself; there is no such thing when it comes to killing royal blood. Her head will be hanging on the gallows as soon as someone finds out," Zane remarked as he watched Lucian straighten up after taking off her shoes and turn to face him.

"That is why we will have to cover her tracks. No one must know, and first, I want you to take care of Catherine. She claims to have seen something this afternoon. Silence her before sunrise," Lucian ordered, giving Zane a look that conveyed his exact meaning.

Zane was an expert when it came to sneaking in and out of guarded places. He could go into the main palace without anyone knowing or noticing. Catherine was someone he didn’t like and would gladly "take care of." Nodding his head, he asked when he noticed Lucian looking deep in thought, "Is there something else?"

"There is," he said as he glanced at Zane. "Prince Aaron. He rubbed me as strange; he seemed to know that his sister wasn’t in her room this evening when I found him with Catherine, yet he didn’t announce anything to the royals about her missing. Instead, he was punishing the maid."

This wasn’t the first time the prince had done something that made him suspicious of his intentions. The first time was when the ambassador had made agreements with the Empress to have Ave in exchange for his support; it was Aaron who had come to tell him about it. Lucian could still remember their encounter that night, and when he’d asked him why he was telling him, the prince had shrugged and said:

"Because I do not like the man. He and I have a score to settle after something he did to me years ago, and since I want to take this chance to get back at him, I thought to also let you know his plan, that is, if you care about your disposed wife." Aaron had told him then.

Lucian knew he had no reason to trust the prince, but then the prince also had no reason to lie to him, thus, he’d decided to keep an eye on Ave that night after beating the hell out of Aaron when he volunteered to be beaten. He had no idea what the prince had done to the ambassador, and he had no intentions of knowing it; however, the reason he had hinted for him to check on Ave when he saw him made Lucian wonder what Aaron’s intentions were.

Lucian wouldn’t tolerate it if the prince was harboring some kind of liking toward his wife; he wouldn’t hesitate to kill the prince if he so much as tried to think he would allow him to come close to his woman now that she was married to him. He had noticed the kind of look in his eyes whenever he watched Ave, especially that night in the hall. Lucian didn’t like it one bit.

"Do you think he knows that your wife had done something to his sister? Should I shut him up as well?" Zane asked, already stretching his knuckles. He didn’t like Aaron one bit; the prince wasn’t only arrogant but annoying, and he would gladly shut him up permanently if Lucian ordered.

"No. I want you to keep an eye on him tomorrow when we go to the main palace for the execution ceremony of the captives. I want to know his intentions before I kill him," Lucian said as he recalled how, if it weren’t for the prince, he wouldn’t have known Ave was in that room, and if he didn’t know, things would have gone wrong.

Zane nodded to the prince’s order, and then after a momentary silence, he asked, "Is the first prince dead?"

"No. He is still breathing, but he is not waking up no matter what the physician tries to do," Lucian informed with a heavy sigh, as he couldn’t help but think that if his brother had listened and had allowed him to plan their movement when they stepped into the battlefield, none of this would have happened.

"How did he get struck?" Zane asked curiously when he noticed the look on Lucian’s face.

"His stubbornness and pride led him to get struck. He insisted on facing the armies that were led by the dark witches head-on with the soldiers, despite the fact that I tried to make him see the danger in that. He stepped on a spell circle and got struck in the chest, a spell that will put him to sleep until eternity, which only a powerful witch can undo. He’s as good as dead now because no witch is here to save him when he hates them." Lucian said with a dismissive tone as he turned to look at his sleeping wife, who had curled up to one side of the bed.

"If you have no more questions, Zane, I’d like to sleep for some time before the morning. Close the door behind you when you leave," Lucian ordered as he made his way into the bathing room, as he was too exhausted to begin talking about everything they had faced on the battlefield, not to mention the last-minute assassination attack.

Zane left the room and closed the door behind him, understanding that Lucian would like to rest.

A few minutes later, Lucian came out from the bathing room in a bathrobe, with his hair falling damply over his shoulders. He held a bowl of water in hand and a wiping cloth along with Ave’s nightdress. He came to the side of the bed and put the bowl of water down on the nightstand.

Reaching out, he meticulously lifted her upper body and carefully began to remove her dress. He was being so gentle so he wouldn’t wake her nor disturb her sleep when she looked so worn out and tired. He wouldn’t want her waking up in the same dress that had a few stains of Madeline’s blood on it and get reminded of how she had killed her.

It took so much time to remove her dress because he was being careful, and once he finally removed it and pulled her chemise to her waist, he tried not to dwell on her naked torso or get tempted to do something that might wake her. He used the wiping cloth to clean her skin and face before he pulled the nightdress over her head and pulled it down her waist before removing the chemise completely from the bottom.

Done, he lay her head back on the pillow; however, before he could pull back, her eyes slowly opened, and she stared up at him with unfocused sleepy eyes with a faint smile playing on her lips.

"Lucian..." She breathed his name as she reached her hand up and touched his face. Smiling, he hummed, "Yes, love," he turned his face into her palm and kissed it before he grabbed her wrist. "Did I wake you up?" he questioned as he reached out and tenderly stroked her hair and face as his body leaned down towards her.

She shook her head, though there was still sleep in her eyes, she muttered, "Let’s sleep. Come to me," she opened her arms for him to climb onto the bed, and like an eager child, Lucian hurriedly climbed up and went into the arms she opened for him. He laid his head on her chest and wrapped his arm around her waist after pulling the blanket over their bodies. He sighed in contentment as she began to use her fingers to massage his scalp and stroke his hair.

Lucian felt the steady beating of her heart against his ear and adjusted his head against the bouncy, comfortable softness of her bosom before he draped his leg over hers under the sheets and closed his eyes. When he felt her shift under him, he asked, "Is my head too heavy on your chest?"

Ave chuckled softly, though he was twice her size, and it was only natural that his head would feel heavy against her chest; however, she didn’t mind it, not when he seemed comfortable lying that way. She had woken up by chance, and the first thing she noticed was his exhausted face right in front of her. She wouldn’t mind enduring it for him to find some sleep; thus, she shook her head and tipped her head down to press a kiss on his hair. "Not at all. Go to sleep," she whispered softly as she hugged his head to her chest and heard him sigh.

It seemed he was indeed so exhausted that he fell asleep in no time at all. She heard his steady breathing and felt half his weight that was on her grow heavier, but the arm he put around her didn’t loosen. Still running her fingers into his hair and listening to his breathing, Ave felt her eyelids growing heavier, and unable to fight her sleep, she fell asleep as well with her hands pausing in his hair.
