Chapter 192: Revelation (part 1)
Lyria didn’t go back inside like the rest who had escorted the bride to the carriage until she watched it disappear into the distance. She glanced down at the purple bracelet around her wrist and wept silently to herself under the moonlight.
Ave wished she could reach out and console her, but she was just an invisible bystander. She stood there again and watched as time swirled around her until she found herself in a large mansion with the sign "The Glynn Residence" written at the top. She was in Anne’s home.
Ave had no idea what this was trying to show her by changing the setting and place, but she knew she would learn something that might answer her unanswered questions. She had never even known that Selene’s mother and Lucian’s were best friends, nor had Lucian ever told her about it. Was that why he married Selene in the past? Was that why he loved her then? Those questions were still swirling through her mind when she entered inside the mansion.
When Ave saw Anne again, she was heavy with pregnancy and was being scolded by another woman in the dining hall of the mansion. Was she already carrying Selene? Ave wondered as she watched, noting how tired and exhausted Anne looked, leaning against the table for support as the woman yelled,
"You should have known that your life in this mansion wasn’t going to be any better when you seduced my husband with your beauty!" yelled the other woman, who upon closer look, Ave realized looked so much like Catherine. Was she Catherine’s mother? Most definitely, she was. Their forehead and mouth were so much alike. The bitch didn’t only look like her mother by face but also in attitude. Why was she yelling at a pregnant woman?
"Clean this entire mess before I return!" she yelled furiously as she gestured to the broken plates and soup on the floor.
Anne heaved a sigh as she muttered, "Claire, I can’t bend in my condition. Let the servants do it, please. Kori won’t be happy if he learns about—" She didn’t get to finish her words before a slap landed on her face.
"Don’t you dare ever take his name in my presence when he is away on important business matters. You will do as I say, and if you say a word to him, I will make sure you regret the day you seduced him into marrying you," she warned with a sneer and shooting her a hateful glare before she walked away, leaving Anne standing there, clasping a hand to her burning cheek as she used her other hand to rub her large belly and slowly bent down to begin picking up the broken pieces.
Ave clenched her fists, angered by the treatment done to the pregnant woman. If she wasn’t invisible, she would have made that darn Catherine’s mother regret it right this instant. No wonder her daughter was a total bitch!
Anne managed to clean up the mess, and she was on her way back to her room when her maidservant came to give her a letter that had arrived from the imperial palace. When Ave saw the maidservant, she knew without a doubt that she was Lydia’s mother from the green eyes and smile.
"A letter from Lyria!" Anne smiled happily, and her maidservant nodded her head before helping her to her room and to the bed. Anne began to unfold the letter even before she sat down.
When she started reading it, her eyes moistened with tears of joy and sadness. "Lyria is pregnant as well. She is heavy with pregnancy just like me. She thinks it’s a boy from his kicks, Juliet," she announced to her maidservant as she read on. "She is now the Emperor’s third consort and has her own quarters in the palace. He is being nice to her because she is carrying his child," she beamed widely, happy that her prediction about her friend becoming the Emperor’s consort had come true.
"That is good news, My Lady. Princess Lyria deserves the best for her sacrifices to our lands," Juliet said as she watched the happiness in her mistress’s eyes.
"Juliet, I think I will be having a girl child. She’s not kicking that much," Anne announced as she took an ink and paper from her nightstand and began to write her reply to her friend.
Ave moved forward to see what was being written. She read Anne’s reply and saw how she told Lyria that if she had a girl child, they should promise to match them when they grow older. Anne had dreamed of her daughter marrying Lucian, Ave thought as she watched the excited woman scribble down her letters. But if this was Selene she was carrying, how come Lucian was older than Selene by far?
They weren’t the same age, and from Lyria’s letter, she was already carrying Lucian by now. Ave realized she would have to stick around to know what was happening.
Time swirled around her again, and when it settled, Ave found herself back in Anne’s room. But now, panicked voices filled the mansion and echoed from outside, rising over the sudden roar of the wind. The sky had darkened, thick clouds swirling angrily above, and the air felt charged, heavy with an impending storm. Curtains whipped against the open windows, and somewhere outside, the crash of wood splitting made her heart lurch.
She felt the dread settling in her chest as she realized what today was—Lucian was being born into the world. The storm and flood everyone had told her about, which happened on the day he was born, was happening. Ave watched as Anne’s husband came to take her into the shelter built in the mansion’s grounds where everyone was running to take cover as the rain poured heavily down and water was gathering.
Ave watched as trees crashed and fell and floodwaters filled the grounds as the sky poured angrily down like it would drown the world. It felt like forever before it settled, and when everything settled and days seemed to pass by as men repaired the damage the rain had caused, Ave saw Anne receive another letter from her friend.
"Oh my Lord, Lyria..." she cried as the letter trembled in her hands while she read it.
"What’s wrong, My Lady, what happened to Her Highness?" Juliet questioned worriedly as she saw the distress in her mistress’s face.
"It’s Lyria. She gave birth to a son with the mark of evil. He is the reason for the flood a week ago. She says he is different, he is...a reincarnation of a cursed man. He will bring damnation to our world..." she cried. "But Lyria swears to protect him if she has to give her life for it. She loves him and would do anything to—Ahh!" Anne clutched her stomach as she let out a scream.
"My Lady, I think your baby is coming. Your water has broken!" Juliet exclaimed in panic as water slid down from between Anne’s legs, and she screamed at the top of her lungs.
Ave bit down on her nails in concern as the midwife came and began assisting her with the birth of her child. It was as if she were truly there and the one in pain. She cried out for the mother, who had turned red from pushing and screaming.
"I can’t do it..." Anne cried as she pushed, and just when Ave thought she indeed wouldn’t be able to do it, she heard the loud wail of the child. Ave let out the breath she didn’t realize she was holding when the baby was lifted by the midwife.
"It’s a boy! You have a beautiful son, Lady Anne!" the midwife announced as she passed the child to its exhausted, eager mother, who cradled him to her breast and smiled through her tears of joy. "I thought it was a girl..." she whispered as she looked down at the bundle of adorableness in her arm.
Ave never knew Selene had an elder brother, and as she watched the mother and son, she didn’t realize she was crying tears of joy for the girl she had watched grow into a woman right before her eyes.
"Rylan Glynn," Kori announced as he held his son for the first time and smiled proudly at the mother and then at the son. "Thank you, Anne, for such a wonderful gift you have given me." He kissed her forehead.
Time seemed to move on again before Ave’s eyes, though she didn’t know why she wasn’t taken to the Imperial palace where Lucian was with his mother. She was starting to like this part more than she should as she watched the boy they birthed grow up into a boy of five years, and by then his mother was carrying another child, which Ave was betting was Selene this time.
"Mama, I feel it move!" the boy named Rylan exclaimed in wonderment as he pressed his little hand on his mother’s large belly where she sat on a lounge chair knitting a sweater for her unborn child and smiling down at him.
"She likes hearing your voice, Rylan." Anne laughed as her son kept moving his hand around to follow the baby’s movement.
"My Lady, you are assuming the baby to be a girl again just like last time," Juliet remarked from the side as she arranged some snacks on the table for her mistress.
"I know for certain this time, she moves a lot. And my hair is falling out a bit too much—it’s a girl," Anne said with certainty.
"Mama, she will be my little sister, and I will take very good care of her when she comes out of you," the boy said joyously. "She will be my little rose, and I will be her knight in armor! Me and my friend Lucian!"
Anne laughed at her son. "You have never even met Lucian before. I only read what his mother says about him in the letters to you, and yet you believe he is your friend already?" She stroked his reddish hair as she shook her head in amazement.
