Chapter 138: "I’ve got you, fierce kitten."
Lucian, who was standing with Madeline but had his eyes on Ave the whole time, gritted his teeth when she accepted to dance with Aaron in advance. If he wasn’t so hellbent on protecting her from his enemy in the hall, nothing in this world would have been strong enough to stop him from taking his claim right next to her and marking his territory with her.
He watched as she smiled and laughed at something Aaron, that annoying bastard, must have said to her. The happier she looked in his presence, the angrier Lucian felt. Had she ever laughed like that with him since she’d come here? Regardless of whether she had or not, Lucian didn’t like seeing her laugh with any male who wasn’t him.
Not just Aaron, he could see many more male gazes were on her, and the one that irked him the most was Caelan’s gaze, who was standing with his friends and the woman he was to marry after the war was over. Whatever his friends were saying, he wasn’t listening; his eyes were on her, and his gaze seemed to roam her entire body as if he were stripping her naked, and Lucian’s fists automatically clenched around the glass goblet he held in his hand. The glass cracked and threatened to break from his grip.
Madeline, who was standing next to Lucian and whose friends had also walked up to approach her, was in a foul mood as she noticed every male’s eyes were on Ave and the Pendragon Princesses. She was the most liked Princess; she should be getting that attention, and all the Pendragon Royals should be flocking around her and trying to gain her attention like they used to do every year. But now, none of them had even approached her.
She could clearly recall how last year those twins had been at her beck and call; she had turned them into her servants, sending to get things for her, and the fools had looked happy to oblige. However, now they were being around a lowly woman who had not just lost her title but would soon be her handmaid after her marriage.
Noticing how even Lucian’s eyes were on her, she couldn’t hold back her anger toward that wretched woman. Who did she think she was to walk into the hall and take every single person’s attention? Though Selene had always been pretty, it wasn’t close to her own beauty, and the girl had never known how to choose a dress color that matched and complemented her looks until now.
"I can’t believe this Selene. What does she think of herself, mingling among the royals like that? Is she trying to compete with you not only by dancing but by showing her beauty?" muttered Princess Madeline’s friend, Senna, who was looking at Ave with disdain from where they stood.
"No matter how hard she tries, she won’t be able to come any close to outshining Princess Madeline," sneered another one of Madeline’s friends.
"Yes, you are right Yara. And you just wait and see how she will end up embarrassing herself when performing the butterfly dance, just like last year. You should have seen how frightened she looked last night when Princess Madeline confronted her about the dance; she would have quit if it weren’t for Her Majesty," laughed Senna as she shook her head in amusement.
Those words brightened Madeline’s mood. Selene might have taken all the attention now, but Madeline was certain she would have none after her performance. She would make sure to put the lowly slave right where she belonged. Catherine had warned her to be wary, but the last person she would be wary and scared of was a loser like Selene.
"Let her enjoy the attention now because it is going to be the last one she’ll ever have after today," muttered Madeline under her breath as she watched Ave with a smirk on her face.
Not long after, the musical instruments in the background changed to that of a dance tune, and slowly, couples began to step into the center of the large hall to dance with their partners.
Madeline glanced at Lucian, who she hadn’t even noticed wasn’t standing next to her anymore and had moved to sit down on one of the many chairs with tables that held feasts on them. She thought he would ask her to dance, but he didn’t even look interested in dancing one bit and sat there with an emotionless face as he sipped from his wine goblet, his bored eyes roaming the hall while occasionally drifting to where Ave was still standing with the Princesses and two princes.
Wasn’t he supposed to come and ask her now? Madeline thought in displeasure as she watched him, waiting for him to look her way, but his gaze didn’t even sway in her direction for a second.
No man had walked up to ask her for a dance after the rumors that Lucian had beaten up a man who had dared to court her yesterday. She had counted how more than five men had approached Selene and asked her, but she seemed to turn them down by telling them that she had a partner already, that partner being her elder brother. She narrowed her eyes at Aaron in displeasure.
Why was he hanging around that wench? She didn’t like him being around her, and if there weren’t so many people, she would have walked up to him and pulled him to complain about her dislike towards that woman to him. He had taken care of her since their childhood and had always given her whatever she asked for. He was the best brother who didn’t like to see her displeased or angered. If it were on a normal day where no man had asked her to dance, he would have come here to take her to the dance floor, but it seemed that wench had charmed him as well.
Madeline gritted her teeth and swallowed her pride before she walked up to where Lucian was sitting and nonchalantly sipping his drink. When she stood in front of him, blocking his view of Ave, the dark glare he shot at her made her legs momentarily turn to jelly, and a chill went down her spine. But she composed herself and looked at him with a smile.
"Your Highness, I think you have forgotten to ask me for a dance, so I came to remind you of it. We will be getting married very soon, so we should—"
"I do not dance." He cut her off coldly with a bored look in his burning flame eyes that regarded her for just a few seconds before he tilted his head to the side to look past her. Madeline didn’t have to turn to know he was looking at that wench again.
Gripping the sides of her dress with her fingers, she fought down the jealousy and hurt that stabbed her right in the chest. She forced a smile on her face as she said, "Then what should I do when everyone is dancing?" She asked, trying to put on an innocent expression.
"You might enjoy watching others succeed at it. But do that from somewhere else because your presence is interrupting my sightline." He deadpanned as he tried to see what Ave was doing now, and it so happened that she was being led to the dance floor by Aaron, whose hands were holding hers. Lucian’s eyes narrowed at how the man was smiling down at her with an expression he quite seemed to recognize in a man.
He watched as they bowed to each other before Aaron placed his arm around her waist and brought her close to him while one of her hands rested on his shoulder, with the other holding his as they began to move to the music, with everyone stopping to watch them.
"I have never seen Prince Aaron look at a girl the way he is looking at that lady," remarked a man sitting at the table next to Lucian’s to his friends. "I’ll have to admit, they quite look good together, and since she’s disposed, he can choose to make her his concubine or even mistress. They would make a good couple regardless."
Lucian’s jaw tightened so hard his lips were twitching. And without a second thought, he got up and glanced at Madeline, who looked disheartened at the side. Without even bothering to ask her, he grabbed her hand and led her to the dance floor where a few young couples were dancing, including Ave, who was switching couples occasionally.
"I thought you said you do not dance, Your Highness?" Madeline inquired while trying to suppress her happiness at the fact that he held her hand and was now leading her to the dance floor.
"I changed my mind," he remarked indifferently as he positioned himself with her and began to dance like the others. But despite the fact that he was dancing with Madeline, he began to inch closer to where Aaron and Ave were dancing so he could have his chance to switch and get to dance with her as well.
Lucian had to switch with several other women, who either annoyed him by saying stupid things or simply looked too shocked to even move properly with the music, and when he thought he wouldn’t get to dance with the woman he desired to dance with, she was finally passed to him and swirled into his arms.
It seemed she had been dizzy from the swirling and dancing around, when she fell into his arms, her head rested against his chest as she tried to catch her breath, her fingers gripping the side of his shirt. Her sweet scent mixed with a rosy fragrance wafted to his nose and caused his muscles to tense up immediately. He felt his heartbeat increase at the feel of her close to him. Without a word, Lucian’s arm made its way to protectively wrap around her slim waist to support her and bring her closer to him.
"I’ve got you, fierce kitten. I’ve got you," he whispered softly as his arm tightened around her, and she momentarily relaxed in his arms as if just realizing he was the one. But it was just for a moment before she tried to pull away from him.
