Chapter 137: Dance partner

Ave hadn’t expected to walk into the hall at the same time Lucian was speaking to Isolde, "I don’t know where she is, and if you are looking for Selene, I’m not the right person to ask. She’s not my concern, and don’t bother me with anything that has to do with her again." But she had, and the surprising thing was that despite the noise in the hall, she had heard his words from a distance loud and clear flew to her ears.

It was strange that her ears had suddenly become sharper after she’d woken up from the worst nightmare this morning. It hadn’t seemed like a nightmare though; it was real, she could feel it. And if anything would prove she hadn’t just experienced that in her sleep, it was the fact that she had woken up with her feet covered in mud and her wrist bruised and scratched from when she had pulled away from the man in the casket.

She could still recall how the man had tried to bite her after he’d said, "Long time no see, Rosette." She had looked at him with confusion and demanded who he was and who Rosette was. He had then smirked darkly and came out of his casket in a flash of speed that had been too fast for even her eyes to see nor her senses to anticipate.

Ave had never been as scared as she was last night when he straddled her and grabbed her neck. She had watched in horror as his face began to transform into something similar to the images she had seen in the spellbook that talked about the night creatures. He was one of them, and he had wanted to bite her with those scary fangs.

"Who would have thought you’d be the first person I would set my eyes on after so many years of forcing me and my clan members to sleep? You dared still show up here, though I must admit, if it weren’t for the taste of your blood, I wouldn’t have recognized you, Rosette. But don’t worry, I will avenge my kind by sucking you to your death tonight!" He’d chuckled in dark amusement as long, thick fangs emerged from the corners of his lips, dark veins marring his neck and face as he leaned down to bite her neck.

Her breath hitched as his fangs glinted in the dim light, stirring a nameless fear deep within her—a fear she couldn’t place but felt as if it had haunted her forever.

Although she had no idea what he was talking about or what he meant; she had wanted to survive and escape him, and she’d done everything to make sure he wouldn’t bite her and suck her dry. Thank goodness she had read through the spellbook to know the right spell to use to weaken the night creatures; she had muttered it under her breath, and the man was flung away from her as he hit his back hard against a tree.

Before he could recover his strength, she had gotten up to her feet and ran. She was still running when she fell again, only that this time, when she fell to the ground, she had woken up in her room and on her bed, where she was covered in sweat and trembling from the aftermath of her encounter with such a being that lived on witch blood.

No words could have described her fear and panic when she woke up; her heart had been beating loudly in her chest like it would pop out of her ribs. She had clutched the blanket to her chest as she fearfully looked around to see if the creature had followed her; at that moment, she had wished she wasn’t alone and that Lucian had been there with her when she’d woken up. She didn’t know when tears of relief flowed down her cheeks at the thought of waking up, but those tears had fallen in earnest when she realized no one was there to assure her that it was just a dream, even she knew it wasn’t.

She didn’t realize she had a trauma with fangs until last night; it was like she had seen those scary, long fangs before, and they had done something that had left their print in her heart, even though she couldn’t pinpoint it. Was that why she hated and feared vampires, even though she had never seen one in all of her life but in movies? She had never been a fan of any vampire movies or liked the thought of being bitten, which was why she had not wanted Lucian to be one of those night creatures when she first read about them, and whenever she thought of him as a vampire, it scared her more than she knew it.

And who was this Rosette the man spoke of? That wasn’t the first time she’d heard that name, Heaven had also spoke of the name, and whatever this Rosette must have done, that man seemed ready to kill her for it.

Ave would never want to experience that again; if possible, she wanted out of this world before something like last night happened again. She shuddered at the thought of the man’s fangs sinking into her; she could never imagine it. She hadn’t been able to sleep again after waking up by dawn and instead brought out that book from under her bed to study more about those kinds of creatures who feed on witches’ blood. The results of the research had brought more fear to her heart rather than the relief she sought.

Ave had been studying the book without even realizing the day had broken. She’d quickly gotten ready and had hurried out in hopes of finding Lucian and telling him about last night, as he was the only person she could confide in this world; he was the only one she could trust with such matters. But walking into the hall and hearing him say that to Isolde not only broke something in her heart but made her change her mind about talking to him altogether.

Though she had been the one to push him away yesterday by telling him to go ahead with his marriage to Madline, she’d done it for his own good and perhaps for hers as well, as she secretly feared what would happen if she allowed him to keep cracking the walls she’d built around herself for years.

Now that she’d heard those words from him, it seemed he was back on track, and she’d made him not care about her anymore. Wasn’t that what she was secretly aiming for, even though she knew it was the opposite of what she should be doing according to the shadow woman, when she told him yesterday that she didn’t want him? So why did it hurt now that he had said those words to Isolde?

Her mission, according to the shadow woman, might require her to make him fall genuinely in love with her, but she didn’t want it to affect her emotionally or physically. She didn’t want him to desire or want her, and now that she had achieved that, it hurt more than she could have imagined.

Ave walked into the hall where she felt everyone’s eyes on her like they hadn’t seen her before. Well, perhaps she’d gone overboard in dressing up; she had thought of a beautiful dress that would suit well with this era, and the magic dress had transformed into something more beautiful than she’d imagined, and because she was in a hurry, she hadn’t bothered to stop and change it again. Now it was too late to change.

The hall was filled with royals and nobles who followed her every movement with their eyes. Even the Empress, who was sitting at the top balcony of the hall on the high chair with the Emperor, couldn’t help but notice how she looked and stood out from the rest. Elara smiled in satisfaction. At least she dolled herself up; the ambassador would be pleased with her effort when she would send Selene to him later in the evening.

Ave’s eyes looked everywhere but Lucian’s side. She walked along with Thalia and Celeste, whom she had met on her way here.

"Everyone is looking at you, Selene," remarked Thalia from the side as she suppressed a smile.

"Not just me, they are looking at us," Ave corrected. Apart from the fact that she had worn a beautiful dress and did her own makeup with the little ancient makeup things she could find, the princesses walking with her were also a sight to behold. They looked beautiful and had an innocent kind of attractiveness to them, especially the elder princess.

Soon, Isolde joined them and beamed widely as she looked at Ave. "I thought something had happened to you. Why didn’t you come for dinner last night?" she questioned as her smile fell and her eyes held a playful glare. She had never been the kind to get worried about any person lower than their class, but this Selene had made her worried for the first time.

"I fell asleep without even realizing it. Were you worried about me?" Ave wiggled her brows at the young princess, who scoffed and lifted her chin high. "Me, worried about you? Impossible. I was just concerned about our dance, that’s all."

Ave laughed and shook her head. She was about to speak when she saw Prince Aaron and Prince Orion approach them, the two in the company of two princesses, none of whom the men looked pleased to be around.

"Milady," Aaron grinned as he stood in front of Ave and took her hand to kiss her knuckle, and when he looked up at her, a frown settled between Ave’s brows as she noticed the faint bruises on his face and how he seemed to limp a little as he stepped back from her.

"What happened to you, Prince Aaron?" It was Celeste who beat Ave to the question, as they’d also noticed the faint bruises on his face.

Aaron grimaced as if the thought of how he got the bruise was unpleasant before he flashed the princesses a white smile that reached his eyes and crinkled the sides of his eyes. "Well, what to say, I got caught up in an aggressive play with my pet lion. She seemed to think of herself as a cat and pounced on me at the least time I expected," he explained with a casual shrug.

Isolde shuddered slightly before she said, "No sane person would keep a lion as a pet, Your Highness. You should return her to the wild before she kills you." She couldn’t imagine living in the same room with that scary lion she had tried her best to avoid all the time after word spread of how aggressive the creature was.

Aaron arched a brow at the young princess, "Well, who told you I was sane?" he deadpanned, but before she could reply, he turned his attention back to the redheaded woman before him and grinned. "You look beautiful, milady. And I would love to reserve a dance with you in advance if you’d grant me the honor?"

Ave, who since the first day she’d met this man gave off a vibe she couldn’t quite place her fingers on, didn’t know if she wanted to dance with him or stay in his company. He didn’t make her feel uncomfortable like most of the men she had met in this era; he only made her feel unsettled. As she hesitated to answer his question, the woman who had walked with him here frowned.

"Your Highness, I thought I was your partner for the night? Why are you asking her for a dance when I am here?" she muttered in displeasure as she eyed Ave up and down in scorn.

Aaron shot her a look and then replied with a straight face, "Because she is prettier than you, Emmaline. Now be a good girl and go find yourself another partner who finds you worth being a partner." He said in a matter-of-fact tone that made the girl named Emmaline open and close her mouth in anger before she glared at Ave and then stomped away, taking her friend, who had been clinging to Orion, along.

Orion sighed in relief after the woman was gone. "I never knew being around women could be this hard and stressful." He patted his chest as he looked at Aaron in gratitude for helping him rid of a pest who had done nothing but talk of her father’s wealth and how their non-existent future children would look only like her and would inherit everything Orion owned when he died. He would be damned to marry her or any woman, who looked forward to his death.

Aaron waited to hear Ave’s reply to his question, and she knew she had to reply. She wasn’t good at dancing the kind of couple dance of this era as she had never done it before, and she knew there’d be such a dance before their performance, and she’d need a partner. Subconsciously looking towards Lucian, whose eyes she had been feeling the whole time on her despite the fact that he was standing with his future wife, she saw how his gaze narrowed on her as if trying to warn her against dancing with the man.

And just so she could show him that she didn’t care about his opinion on who she chose to dance with, she looked back at Aaron with a smile. Lucian had once warned her to stay away from the man or any other, and she would do just that, even if just to annoy him and make him come after her later to confront her for it, that was if he even cared about it after what she’d heard him say to Isolde earlier.

"It will be my pleasure to dance with you, Your Highness." She curtsied in a manner she noticed women do here.
