Chapter 130: The spell book
Back in Ave’s room, where she’d just arrived inside and dropped the bag she had been clutching tightly on her shoulder on the bed, she took a deep sigh of relief and stretched. She had run all the way here after she’d left that Edward. The man’s eyes alone were so scary, one wouldn’t want to look into them for too long, not to mention when he held out a sword.
She could still feel her limbs slightly trembling from the aftermath of her encounter with him, but thanks to Aaron—who, for some reason, always gave her a weird feeling she couldn’t pinpoint whenever she was around him—he had interfered and saved her. The young man had a mysterious and dangerous vibe that made one want to steer clear of him, not to mention his dark eyes that always looked at her like he knew something about her, even things she didn’t.
However, the moment she recalled the disgusting gaze of the other man, she suddenly forgot about Aaron and felt repulsed and the urge to wash her body, his eyes alone made her feel like she had been touched by him.
It was a wonder Lucian had done more than touch her, but not once had she felt this repulsion towards him—unlike with this old jerk and his lecherous gaze. She hurriedly dismissed that thought as her eyes fell on the bag she had dropped. She would have loved to bathe, but recalling how sick Lydia seemed this morning, she hurriedly grabbed the bag and brought it to the desk side after locking the door.
Ave retrieved the big dark brown book with a hardened old cover that had weird linings and patterns on it, and in the middle of all the patterns, there was something like a small circle. The book smelled of herbs and plants with a dampness. She tried to open it again, just like in the library, but to her surprise, it was as sealed as it had been then, the book looking like its pages had been sealed together.
A frown settled on her face as no matter what she did, it didn’t budge. She would have given up if not for a strange pull she was feeling towards the book. She had a gut feeling that whatever she was looking for was in this weird, annoying, damn old—
"Ouch!" Ave cried as the wound on her palm had been forced to open up again from how much she was pulling at the book to open it. The wound had begun to form a scab after Lucian had licked the blood off in the library. It was closing up, but she had reopened it. She dropped the book as her palm began to bleed again.
Hissing in pain and annoyance, Ave stood up to look for something to wrap around her palm to stop the bleeding when she stepped on the front hem of her dress and almost fell forward but supported herself by placing her hands, palms down, on the desk. However, it so happened that her injured palm was placed on the book.
She quickly removed her palm away from it so her blood wouldn’t stain the ancient book she intended to return to the library now that it had no use since she couldn’t open it. However, her blood had already stained it, and she gasped.
"Damn, I will have to clean this up before it dries up," she muttered as she quickly went to bring something to clean the blood from the book. Nonetheless, when she returned to the desk side with a rag, she stopped short in her tracks when she saw the blood suddenly being absorbed into the middle of the book, and a golden glow emitted from its sides and all over the book.
The rag fell from Ave’s hand as she stood dumbfounded in front of the desk, watching what was happening to the book. Before she knew it, she heard a click from the book, and then it began to open by itself, its pages turning on their own. Each page had a black background, but the words written on it were in a gold, a bright gold color that shone and glowed like something magical.
Ave blinked repeatedly to see if she was hallucinating, but even after a while, she saw the book was still turning its pages, each page containing glowing drawings and writings. How the hell was this possible? She wondered as she absentmindedly sat on the chair in front of the desk with her eyes glued to the book.
A while ago, she had been unable to open it, but now, when her blood had touched it, it opened. Just like that day in Lucian’s late mother’s garden when a drop of her blood fell on that strange flower, the garden had bloomed for some minutes before it died again.
Could it be possible that she was indeed... a witch?!!
That meant she also had powers in her blood in some way. It had healed Lucian that day, but she’d ended up getting the wound. With the realization that she could indeed be a witch, or more accurately, Selene could be a witch, came a feeling of dread that she would be burned alive if anyone were to know of this.
However, Ave hurriedly assured herself with the fact that she would just look through this book for any spell to heal poison and swap souls. After that, she would never use any of Selene’s powers again, as she wouldn’t even be here to use them. She would be long gone before anyone realized it.
Gone back to her time and life, away from all this troublesome life and people, away from Lucian and everyone. Lucian would be just fine. He now had Madeline with him, and that little bitch seemed to like him. She would take care of him more than Selene had. He would have a wife who would stand by him and give him the support he deserved. He would no longer have to sneak out at night and go to the courtesan’s house...
Ave was happy for him, and she smiled, a bitter smile that mirrored the ache she felt in her heart at the thought that she wouldn’t have to put up with him again once she left. Well, she wasn’t certain if she would find a soul-swapping spell, but...
Ave’s eyes fell on a certain page in the book that made her quickly stop it from turning over with her hands. She spread the page open, and she saw the illustration of a drawing that had caught her eye. It looked like a soul was leaving one body and being put into another body!
Though everything written under the drawing was written in a language she’d never seen or heard of before, surprisingly, as she attempted to read it, she understood it in her mind!
A soul-swapping spell! She rejoiced in her head as she began to read how the spell works and what one needs before performing it. The more she read, the more hopeful she became at the fact that she would finally be able to leave here and go back to her time. However, when she continued to read, her brows frowned deeply as it was starting to get confusing.
Ave reread the words to see if they really made any sense.
It read:
[To complete the soul-swapping spell, you must gather what is both old and new, lost and found, life and death.
First, the blood of your greatest enemy must be spilled, for only through their death will the soul be unchained. Then, seek the Flower of Ages—a blossom as old as the stars, yet as fresh as morning dew. It grows where time stands still, hidden from sight.
You must harvest it under the shadow of the waning moon, but beware—the flower must be plucked by hands not your own, or its power will fade.
Once these are gathered, speak the incantation at the hour the sun and moon share the sky, when light and shadow meet as one. Only then will the souls shift, and the spell be sealed.]
"What in the name of hell is this bullshit?" Ave muttered in annoyed disbelief. How was she supposed to understand all this gibberish nonsense written here? She wasn’t only going to have to kill an enemy, she would have to look for some damn lost flower and not even pluck it with her own hands? Then whose hands would pluck it?
Ave pinched the bridge of her nose as she could feel a rising headache throbbing in her head as she tried to make sense of this. It seemed it would take some time before she would get to understand what this meant, but before then, she would be working on impressing the Chen Kingdom while trying to figure out what all this means.
She decided to put this aside for now and look for ways to cure someone who’s poisoned. Sighing, she began to turn the pages while reading through them. A lot of things fascinated her in the book, like how to kill... the night creatures with a single spell. ’And what are the night creatures?’ she wondered as it was written that they were the greatest enemies of the witches.
Ave studied that part because she was curious. She saw the drawings of the so-called night creatures, and she shuddered at the hideous sight of them. They not only had long sharp fangs, but with blood-red eyes and white around the ring of their orbs. They had visible black veins all around their bodies and sharp nails. Their real meal? The witches’ blood...
To Ave, these so-called creatures looked more like scarier versions of vampires, only these ones don’t feed on human blood but witches, as to them, humans were considered beneath them. Wait a minute, could Lucian also be one of these things?! she wondered.
But then she realized, Lucian didn’t look one bit as hideous as these night creatures said to move more at night in their world. Though she’d noticed he liked to take her blood, she knew he wasn’t one of them. She could feel it. He was something else, something mysterious she was suddenly curious about. If he wasn’t a vampire or any of these night creatures, then what was he, and why would he lick her blood?
That thought moved around her mind until she quickly decided to put it aside and looked for what she needed in the book for now. She would wonder and figure out what Lucian was later. She returned to turn the pages when she finally got to the page that talked about healing and cures.
To Ave’s relief, the curing part wasn’t as complicated as the soul swap. All she needed was to read out the incantation written on the page, make some drawings indicated in the page, and use her blood on the patterns.
"This seems easy," she thought with a small smile. All she had to do was find Lydia and cure her of the poison, then hope Lucian would never find out that the girl had been the spy in his house or that she had used the powers he had warned her against using. Not to mention, she still had to prepare for tomorrow’s ceremony as well.
