Chapter 126: Can’t happen
Chapter 126: Can’t happen
Ave, who was taken aback by his words, stared at him in disbelief. "You can’t change your mind about marrying Madeline; she’s the only way you can get the throne," she muttered, almost in a trance as she couldn’t believe he would do that just because she didn’t like the woman. Though Ave indeed didn’t like Madline, she wouldn’t let her dislike for her ruin his chance of taking the throne. Her likes and dislikes didn’t matter here, especially when she didn’t even like Lucian, or did she?
She felt Lucian rub the back of her hand, which he still held, as he said, "I will find another way to take the throne without the help of the Banzai kingdom; you need not worry about that."
Another way to take the throne? Did he mean treason?! Ave thought as her eyes widened, and she quickly pulled her hand away from his and stepped back to put some distance between them. She was here to help him take the throne for the right reasons, not be the cause of him committing a crime. She shouldn’t allow her own emotions into this matter when things were already going the right way. Marrying Madeline was the only way he could have the throne and make the Emperor put him back in the line of succession.
She saw that his expression looked displeased, but she knew it was time she set things right and stopped being an emotional yo-yo in his presence. She hardened her heart, lifted her chin, and said firmly,
"No, you don’t have to concern yourself with my likes and dislikes, Your Highness. I don’t like you enough to stop your marriage to Madeline. I don’t even care who you marry; you can do whatever you please. It’s not like I am even your real former wife." She shrugged casually to emphasize her lack of concern, but deep down, her chest felt heavy and somewhat uncomfortable. However, she ignored it, as she didn’t want to acknowledge or even know the reason behind that feeling, not yet at least.
A deep furrow formed between Lucian’s brows, as if his entire face was trying to resist the emotions welling up inside him. He stared at Ave for a whole minute without uttering a word, and then all of a sudden, his expression turned cold, the light in his eyes dimming as the weight of her words sank in. He didn’t know why he was so displeased by her words—but he was, and as if he’d realized something, when he spoke, the warmth in his voice was gone, replaced by his usual indifference.
"I see. You do not care. If that’s what you want, then I shall marry Princess Madeline and not concern myself with your likes and dislikes, Milady. But I would like to warn you that after I marry her, whatever position you find yourself in, you will not blame me for it." He warned, knowing that with Ave’s character, she would indeed blame him for something he had tried to avoid for her own sake.
Ave stilled. Madeline had said she would make Lucian turn her into a servant, and now that she could see how her words had made him lock up emotionally all of a sudden, she was certain she had just dug her own grave. But then if she didn’t say what she said, she would be messing up a lot of things. However, thinking about it, it seemed to be for the good of both of them. She wouldn’t regret this later on, would she?
She would be gone before their marriage if that book she’d dropped in the library turned out to be what she was looking for. She wouldn’t be here to be their servant, thus she had nothing to worry about, right? All she had to do was cure Lydia and then help him with the Chen kingdom as she’d promised, and then go back home, where she belonged...
Her body stiffened, and her gaze shifted, no longer meeting his, as she realized she might end up showing her true emotions if she looked at him.
Lucian, who was standing before her, noticed the changes in her demeanor. The change was instant, like she had locked a door inside herself and thrown away the key. And when she looked up at him again, she had an unbothered look on her face.
"Whatever, as long as you end up marrying Princess Madeline, I don’t really care." She uttered calmly, with a smile playing on her lips—a smile that irked Lucian more than he wanted it to. She really didn’t care about him or the fact that he would be marrying Madeline? He didn’t know why, but he wanted to see her care, to see her be against it because she couldn’t bear the thought of him being with another woman, just like he wouldn’t be able to bear the thought of her being with another man.
He would give anything and do anything to see her really care, and that thought alone made him even angrier. What was it with him? She had made it obvious that she didn’t want him as much as he wanted her, but yet his heart was unwilling to accept that. He wanted to see her jealous and angry, but her calmness made him so mad, so mad he wanted to hurt someone—not her, never her. He would never hurt her, but he would make sure she regretted this and begged him to change his mind.
Thus, he looked at her and nodded his head. "Very well then, Milady. I shall marry Princess Madeline since that’s what you want." He said nonchalantly and was about to leave when she quickly reached out and pulled his shirt. For a moment, Lucian felt hopeful that she’d changed her mind, but when he turned and still saw that same locked-off expression on her face, his heart dropped.
"I want to tell you something," she said as she retrieved her hand from his shirt and put them back at her sides, a serious expression, which he rarely saw, on her face.
Lucian turned back to face her, curious about what she wanted to say. "What is it?"
Ave had just recalled what Lydia had told her about the Empress’s plan and had stopped him to tell him before he left, as she could tell with what she’d said, he wouldn’t be coming to her room again tonight, and she stilled her heart for now from feeling anything about that.
She looked around cautiously before stepping closer and lifted her hand to grasp his shirt collar, tugging him down to her level, catching him off guard. Before he could react, she began to speak in a whispered voice.
"There is something you should know. I overheard the Empress talking to her brother about adding assassins to the Pendragon soldiers when you leave for the war. She wants them to kill the first prince and then blame it on you. You have to protect him in the war to avoid such a thing from happening."
A frown settled on Lucian’s face. If he were to be framed for killing the first prince, he wouldn’t only be deprived of the throne altogether but executed immediately for the crime. It seemed the Empress had started to feel threatened by the alliance he was making to the point she wanted to kill two birds with one stone. How cunning and smart of her, he thought as he turned to the side where Ave was still holding his collar and standing so close to him that when he turned, his lips grazed her cheek, and she hurriedly released his shirt and stepped back, cheeks reddening and eyes widening.
Ave felt the heat rush up her face, but then she quickly schooled it. It would be better if she didn’t acknowledge his lips grazing her cheek as it was a mistake. She cleared her throat and said, "Though I know you and the first prince are not on good terms right now, I would like you to know that it was the Empress who has been brainwashing him and making him believe you’re after his life."
"I know," he remarked as he straightened up. He had known this all along. However, he hadn’t bothered to clear any of the Empress’s brainwashing on the elder prince, as the man had made his life hell when he was young.
Alden would look for little mistakes to punish him, just because of the rumors of his mother being the cause of Alden’s mother’s death. Lucian had hated Alden and wanted to kill him himself, thus with the hate in his heart, he had no reason to clear up any misunderstandings that had already turned into reality.
Ave’s brows drew together. "You knew about this all along and you didn’t do anything to make Alden see that you have no bad intentions towards him?" she asked, taken aback.
Lucian’s amber eyes narrowed down at her. "And who says I have no bad intentions towards him?" He smirked. Even if he were to tell that idiot brother of his what the Empress was doing, why would he believe him?
"Then does that mean you won’t do anything about the assassination on him?" she asked, her eyes locking onto his cold ones as she couldn’t believe that despite knowing that Alden was being used, he hadn’t done anything about it and instead wanted him dead. Though she didn’t care about Alden as she didn’t know him enough, she just didn’t want the man before her to have the blood of the innocent on his hands. And Thalia, she seemed to care so much about her brother.
Lucian clicked his tongue before he said, "Though I want him dead, not at the cost of me losing the throne." Saying this, he looked at her, his gaze lingering on her face, then trailed to her neck where he had refreshed the mark he’d left there before, and then looked back at her face.
"Thank you for telling me about this, Milady. At least it wouldn’t get in the way of my marriage after I return from the war, and I look forward to you..." He wanted to say ’look forward to seeing you regret your decision,’ but changed his mind and only offered her a curt bow before he turned and left the stables, leaving Ave stunned.
