Chapter 104: Let me hold you

"You can tell me about that, but please let go of me. Let’s sit up and talk," Ave said, anxious to get away from his hold. His scent was all over her to the point she hated that she liked it. Nonetheless, instead of releasing her, Lucian only snuggled closer to her, pressing her back so close to his front like he didn’t want any gap between them.

"Let me hold you like this, Aveline. Even if just for a little while, until I’m done telling you why I sparred with the prince of Nazia," he breathed.

Ave found herself relaxing in his arms as she heard his words, which she was curious about. She would kick him off the bed when he finished telling her why he had sparred with that prince this afternoon.

"Why did you spar with him?" she questioned, trying not to move too much so she wouldn’t be so aware of how he was holding her or his leg around her body.

"I wanted their kingdom’s support," he said quietly. "I’ve thought about it, and I’ve come to the decision to take the throne, not by treason, but the right way," he said.

Ave’s eyes widened in astonishment, and she hurriedly managed to turn around on the bed to face him, only to immediately regret it as his face was so close, his nose was now touching her forehead. To meet his eyes, she moved her head back and looked up at him, seeing that his eyes were already looking down at her.

"You really won’t be committing treason anymore?" she asked softly, unable to hide her excitement at the fact that she had at least achieved something from the quest given to her.

"I won’t, if I can ascend the throne without bloodshed," he breathed, his eyes on her bright blue ones. "The commoners are making it easy by doing what you asked them, and I heard the Emperor has sent for the head of the village to the palace on the day of the ceremony to hear their request. And if I can get the support of at least five of the ten kingdoms in our Empire, I will be the next successor, and the Emperor will have no choice."

After his return from that village, he had decided to take the throne to make things better, not only for the villagers but for people like him, Ave, and his mother, to be able to live without fear of being killed if they were discovered to have powers, and most importantly, to avenge his mother’s death by depriving the Empress of the right to place her son on the throne. Not to mention the fact that he didn’t want Caelan taking control of the woman in his arms if he were to be the Emperor before Lucian was done planning his treason.

"What if the kingdoms don’t support you to be the next Emperor?" Ave asked curiously, and she saw his eyes darken briefly before he said, "Then I will go with my first plan."

Killing everyone. That was bad, Ave thought. It wouldn’t only make things worse for her but also cause the deaths of many in the Empire. Especially the royals he was angry at for how they must have treated him since childhood.

"If you wanted Nazia kingdom’s support, why did you ask the princess?" Ave inquired softly, her hand flattening against his chest to keep him from pulling her closer than she already was. If he were to pull her any closer, her lips would be locking on his from how he had tipped his chin down to meet her eyes as he spoke.

"Four years ago, when the kingdoms under the Empire came together to battle an enemy Empire, the Nazia kingdom sent all their armies, including the princesses who were not spared from fighting for their lands."

Ave had heard whispers among the other royals that Nazia kingdom treated its princesses like men, training them for battle rather than marriage, which had surprised her a little when she’d thought Lucian wanted to marry from there.

Lucian continued, "I met Princess Nani on the battlefield, she had almost been killed by an enemy soldier. I saved her life and had to fight while carrying her on my back as she was injured. After the battle, she promised to grant me anything I wanted as long as she had the power. At that time, I didn’t think I would ever want anything from her and left... until now."

So that was why he had approached her and made the request. "Did she ask her brother, and he challenged you to a spar instead?" she asked, and she saw him nod.

"Prince Talinor is the crown prince of Nazia and will soon be taking the throne," Lucian said. "He cares deeply for his siblings, but he wanted to take a wife from the princesses we have as guests and challenged me to a spar where I’d lose to give him face."

"Did he agree to help you after you lost the spar?" Ave asked, though she found the prince of Nazia’s way of thinking a bit strange. If Lucian were a normal human, he would have died from that stab in the stomach.

Lucian was silent for a while before he replied grimly, "He hasn’t given me his answer yet. I will have to wait until the ceremony is over in two days."

It would be bad if Talinor didn’t agree to help Lucian after that stab, Ave thought, as she now relaxed completely into his arms that offered her warmth from the cold she had been feeling a while ago in the room. He was surprisingly warmer than a quilt.

"I would also like to help with the others," Ave said after a moment of silence. "I heard the Chen kingdom is known for coming up with most of the recipes served in the Empire and will give anything to have new additions to their collection of meals. I have many ideas to offer them in exchange for their support," she said, subconsciously smoothing the creases on his loose white shirt.

A look of surprise crossed Lucian’s face as he gazed at her. He could tell she was serious about helping him. "Why do you want me to take the throne? And why are you willing to help me?" he asked her, curious. The real Selene had done everything in her power to make sure he failed and never came close to succeeding in anything he did since he’d married her. She had made him so bitter and so hardened and blinded by hatred that he wanted nothing but to see the world crumble beneath his feet, but this woman...

A woman he had told himself not to trust and never to allow into his life like he had Selene, was the opposite. She wanted to see him succeed. Why?

Ave heard his questions and quietly blinked twice. She wasn’t helping him for any reason but her own. She wanted to return to her time, and only when she had completed her quest of making him love his wife and take the throne for the right reasons would she achieve that. Furthermore, she wanted this world to make it to her time, and perhaps she might end up meeting the descendants of the people she had come to know now when she returned.

However, she couldn’t tell him that or allow him to see that she wasn’t being completely honest with him on why she was helping him. She simply pursed her lips and told him a part of the truth, "I want you to take the throne so Pendragon wouldn’t vanish before the future. And I want you to take it because the commoners need a sensible ruler. Not to mention I don’t want to be a sex slave to that fucker." She shuddered at the thought of it. She could never imagine that—being the third prince’s sex slave, that would be worse than death!

"Don’t worry, I won’t let that happen for as long as I am here," Lucian assured firmly as if he could read her thoughts, and his arm turned even firmer around her waist.

Ave gulped as she felt her heart tremble over his words of assurance. She really needed to go back before she let this attachment to this man grow even more than it had already begun to. Little by little, he was crossing the lines she wanted to put between them before it would go out of her hands. She had encountered many men in her time, but none of them had been successful in getting her to do more than shake their hands until this prince, who was now holding her on the bed, something she would never have allowed or liked before with her trauma of being touched by men.

"Convincing the Chen kingdom to support me would be hard as you have no relationship to me now that I have publicly disposed of you," came Lucian’s deep voice, breaking the momentary silence that had fallen between them.

"Trust me, they won’t be able to resist my bargain once they have a taste of the food I have in mind." Ave smiled, thankful for the distraction from her emotions and thoughts.

"Food from the future?" Lucian asked, his eyes now on her smiling lips. He didn’t doubt that she could help him, but it wouldn’t be easy for her to subtly convince the Chen kingdom without making it obvious she was helping him.

Ave nodded her head. "Yes."

"How many do you know?" he asked.

"I know many more than you can imagine. I can give them a sample of burgers, pizza, and..." Ave began to list the foods she could give them recipes for in exchange for their support, and she couldn’t help the excitement that bubbled up inside of her at the thought of making her favorite foods again. She listed many while Lucian did nothing but hum in response until she looked up at him and realized his eyes were now closed, and his breathing was turning steady. He was asleep.

His hardened features had softened in his sleep, and his long thick lashes, which looked even more gorgeous than those of a woman’s, cast shadows over his high cheekbones. His thin, sinfully sexy lips were slightly parted, and he snored softly.

Ave, who had never seen his face this close before or even thought about admiring him as his eyes were the most distracting and scariest part of his face, couldn’t help but marvel at his looks. His face was so flawless she thought it was unreal, as she couldn’t see a pore in sight, and she would have run her fingers against it if her arms weren’t caged by the way he was holding her.

Selene was a lucky woman, but an ungrateful one who had been blinded. It pricked Ave’s heart to believe that one day she might return to her body and Ave would not be here to witness if she would embrace this man and stand by him or let him crumble into hate like he had been on the path of doing before.

Watching his peacefully sleeping face and listening to his faint, light snoring, Ave felt sleepy herself, and a yawn escaped her lips before she stumbled into the world of slumber, a sleep so peaceful she had no nightmares.
