Chapter 74: Jackpot

’...What the hell are you doing?’

The thought blasted through Steve’s mind like a gunshot.

His eyes locked on the towering figure behind him.

The ghost stood silently, the air thick with its overwhelming presence. Its gaze pierced straight through Steve’s back, unwavering, almost protective.

Then, the ghost’s mouth creaked open, bones flexing as if mimicking a sigh. Its voice rang out in a low, ominous tone.

"Ehhh? What the hell are you talking about?"

Steve turned his head slightly, confused and tense.

"Kill everyone here? I’d do no such, especially not for a mere mortal." the ghost repeated, its tone sharper now, almost mocking.

"I have no intention of being here, remember? You’re the one who bound me to your soul."

’Bound...? Oh, right. The Author’s Notebook.’

Steve blinked, trying to keep his cool, though his fingers twitched slightly.

’Whatever...if what you say is true.’ he thought once more.

’...Why the hell isn’t she moving anymore? Is this your doing?’

The ghost’s glowing eyes flicked over to Lady Jenny, who stood frozen a few feet away—her blade mid-swing, her entire body stiff like stone.

Then its gaze drifted back to Steve, calm and ancient.

"Yes and no..." the ghost replied coolly.

"She tried to attack you. Naturally, my instincts are... heightened. In as much as I resent it, any being which poses a threat to your life stirs me up to clash with it...or rather, to kill it."

It tilted its skull.

"I believe she just caught a glimpse of my true power. And that was enough to paralyze her muscles."

In Lady Jenny’s mind, it was a different storm altogether.

She had been glaring at Steve—only to realize his attention had never even reached her.

’His eyes are locked behind...nothing, what the hell is he even looking at? Can’t he see how close I am to killing him? Does he truly believe that even at this point...I’m not a threat?’

He hadn’t flinched. Hadn’t blinked. Hadn’t even acknowledged the blade she’d held to his throat.

’... He thinks he can strike me down... and maybe he can. But how powerful is he? Just what is he?’

Her hands trembled. Rage warred with fear in her veins, but she couldn’t move. She felt...small.

Steve, still staring at the ghost, spoke inwardly with firm resolve.

’Whatever you do... don’t kill her.’

He finally flicked his eyes toward Lady Jenny—but it was too late. She gasped suddenly as control of her limbs returned, and without a word, she bolted backward like a hunted animal, gliding across the alley floor to where her two comrades stood, dumbfounded.

"Lady... Lady Jenny!" one of them stammered, catching her trembling form.

Gritting her teeth, Jenny hissed under her breath, her eyes damp with humiliation and fury.

"Let’s go."

Without hesitation, she spun and sprinted off, her allies trailing behind her, throwing worried glances over their shoulders.

"Lady Jenny, what happened?!"

Their voices faded with distance as they turned the corner, vanishing into the alley’s shadow.

Steve stood there, alone in the alley, the tension gradually bleeding out of the air.

His gaze followed them until they disappeared—then it snapped back behind him.

The ghost was gone.

One blink ago, it had been there. Now... nothing.

’Huh. He’s gone already.’

Steve exhaled slowly.

’Just his presence alone practically saved my life again. How strong is he really?’

His lips curled into a faint smirk.

’And better yet... if he’s bound to me—if I can control him—then how strong can I become in this world? With my magic, physical stats and his power..I’ll be unstoppable.’

He stared blankly into the dark, thoughts churning until his attention was snagged by the faintest whimper.

He turned.

Still crumpled near the edge of the tunnel was the girl from earlier. Rapunzel.

Her golden hair was tangled around her shoulders, and her wide, uncertain eyes followed the path where Lady Jenny had fled—but then snapped back as Steve approached her.

He moved without a word, footsteps steady and calm.

Her breath caught as he extended a hand toward her.

Déjà vu.

She remembered this. The night before. That same hand. That same warm presence. That same question rising in her heart.

’Why... does he keep helping me?’

She hesitated, staring at his open palm as if it might vanish. Her lips trembled.

And then, just like before, something inside her decided, only this time she reached up.

Their hands touched—his warm and firm, hers delicate and trembling.

He pulled her to her feet, not forcefully, but with a steady strength that brought her close—close enough to feel his calm heartbeat, close enough that her chest rested lightly against him for the briefest of seconds before she stepped back in embarrassment.

Steve looked down at her, his voice soft.

"Are you okay?"

Her lips parted, but no sound came. She simply nodded. Her heart was still hammering in her chest.

"Don’t worry." he said, flashing a gentle smile.

"They won’t be able to hurt you again."

She stood silently, adjusting her skirt, brushing dust from her dress with shaky fingers.

She had the figure of a model—curves in all the right places, eyes like stormy oceans. Steve’s gaze flicked over her—admiring, but not hungry.

’She’s beautiful... no doubt. A perfect fit for my future harem... so...let’s make a move! Hehe... if I can control her with the author’s notebook it’d make things easier...and so, to do that...I need a name...now...I just gotta act as casual as I can.’

She finally looked up at him and whispered.

"Thank you."

Steve blinked.

"You don’t have to thank me. I was just doing what’s right."

She smiled—soft, hesitant.

"I mean it." she said, voice barely above a murmur.

"You... you saved me. I owe you."

He scratched the back of his neck, suddenly bashful.

"Well... it depends how you look at it. But sure. If you really wanna help me out, maybe you can help me get used to school and stuff. I’m kinda new here. Wouldn’t mind having a friend."

He offered another hand—this time to shake.

"I’m Steve."

She blinked, eyes darting between his hand and his face. Then, slowly, she reached out and grasped his hand.

"Mary." she said, giving the faintest of smiles.

"My name is Mary."

’Jackpot.’ Steve thought, grinning inside.

Everything was aligning for him, and so it should as he was the author...Atleast that’s what he thought before what was to come.
