Chapter 55: A sneaky Beta

Chapter 55: A sneaky Beta

I sighed, "I don’t think I can do this any more, Fan. You said the punishment for not completing the mission is death, right? I don’t think I can pass this level. I’m just a coward, like the previous Brys. You don’t—"

"Don’t say things like that! You are not like him. When I left, it was to meet the other systems who worked with the numerous Brys that were brought in to help the Storms of the worlds. However, you are the only one who was able to make one of the Storms fall for you!"

He sounded a bit insistent. It was as if he wanted me to see the light at the end of the tunnel when there are no lights there.

"Not any more." I glanced at his closed door, "he doesn’t love me. I’m just a coward." I dropped the bag of things I got for him on his door and turned to leave.

I have decided. Leaving this world sounds better than staying here. There is nothing left for me here.

"Who told you? His love for you is at its 20%. You have a chance with him!" He followed me, reluctant to drop the matter. He must be eager to level up. That’s why he’s sticking to me, hoping I will be the one to get Storm to open his heart.

But I know I can’t do that. Not with Storm’s blatant hatred. He will rather see me dead than anywhere near him. I can’t afford to piss him off anymore.

"20% is too little. It might be that he doesn’t entirely hate me. But that 80% is too much. I don’t think I can go through with this any more." I opened the door of their dorm and strode out.

The sun is high up in the sky, shining so brightly, it made me jealous. If only I can be like the sun, having no worries at all. Won’t it be okay?

"I have a trick. Giving up means you have accepted defeat. What if he wants you to pursue him like he did to you? Don’t you think insisting on —"

"Then, what? What else will I gain from this? He doesn’t love me, Fan. And I don’t blame him. No one in their right senses will love someone like me." I turned my back to him and closed my eyes as I allowed the warmth of the sun to wash through me.

"I hope you don’t give up, Brys. The destiny of those worlds depends on you. If you give up now, I’m afraid those worlds will collapse. For years, the real Storm has endured the pain of splitting his soul. I’m afraid he might go mad if nothing is done to help him." He placed his hand on my shoulder, "there is hope for you. Please don’t give up until you have no choice. I will be here for you. Whenever you need me, just think of me."

I opened my eyes, just in time to see him disappear. I glanced back at the Alphas’ dorm as his words replayed in my mind.

If there is a possibility that I might get together with Storm one day, is enduring his insults worth it?

I guess it does. I nodded, with a grim determination in my eyes. I won’t let go until he asks me to do that. But even if he doesn’t, I will be like the dumb Brys who died because of his love for him.

I just wonder what the people reading my story will consider me to be if they read through the pages. Will they think I’m a fool? Will they feel apathetic toward me?

I strode back to the study building, only to see Sky from my peripheral. The Beta wasn’t going towards our building, he was sneakily walking towards the forest we competed in.

I glanced around at the empty compound. The teachers have gone to their classes and so have the students. But why is Sky going towards the forest?

I would have ignored him and headed to class had it not been for how sneaky he was. That was why I followed him. I made certain to be at a safe distance, so he won’t hear my approach.

As for my scent, I’m lucky he can’t perceive pheromones because he’s a Beta. Else, he would have caught me.

I tailed him down the long trail he chose on the day of the contest. The farther we went, the thicker the forest became. It was unlike the trail I chose. There are thorny plants around, and I had to carefully manoeuvre my way to avoid getting wounded.

Sky immediately stopped. Luckily, I was close to a tree, so I hid there. I had to regulate my breathing because I knew he will hear the sound if it was too loud.

I sneakily peeked from the tree, to notice that he has gone. I ran out of my hiding place and glanced around. There is no sight of the golden-haired Beta. The entire place is devoid of any signs of the Beta. It was as if I imagined him being there.

"Sky!" I called out to him but got no reply. Aside from the chirping of the birds, and the occasional hooting sounds, I heard nothing else.

I hastened towards the place I last saw him before he disappeared. The footprints on the ground were enough proof that he was there.

However, it seemed like he disappeared into thin air. The leaves rustled as the subtle wind blew on them, yet, I heard no sounds of a person’s voice or footsteps.

I was all alone in the vast forest that seemed to have swallowed the Beta.

"Brys!"

I screamed at the top of my lungs when I felt a hand on my chest.

"Calm down, I’m the one." The frosty voice said behind me.

I slowly turned, to face someone I never thought I will meet in a place like this.

"Mr Kim?"
