Chapter 49: A wrong action
"What?" I took a step back, shocked by his words. "What do you mean?"
"I..." He ran a hand through his hair once more, looking distraught. "I... Just ... I..." He took a deep, steady breath before he finally stared into my eyes. "I love you, Brys," he whispered, looking both bold and nervous.
"Love?" I scoffed.
"Do you even know what love is?" I raised a brow at him. Seems like this Alpha needs to be slapped on the head before he understands what it means to love someone.
"Of course, I do. I love you, Brys." He sighed, "I know we haven’t known each other for a long time. And it’s unlikely for there to be any romance between us." He stared down the corridor before he turned to face me, "I don’t know when it started, but I know deep down that I like you —love even."
My heart soared at his words, but a single thought made me frown. This was how he was able to ensnare the last host. He doesn’t love me. He’s only trying to complete the story.
Though I don’t feel the urge to harm him. Hell, I don’t see him as a potential threat. But should he try anything funny —like acting as the Storm in the comic I read, I won’t hesitate to stab him with the odd knife I have in hand.
I pursed my lips, "you don’t know what you are —"
"Of course, I do! I get jealous when you are with others. I always have this urge to mark you and make you mine so that anyone who sees you will know that you are mine!" He looked like he was almost crying.
He took a step towards me until he had me backed against the wall. He placed his hands on either side of my head. "I love you, Strawberry," he repeated as he leaned closer to kiss me. "I’ve had feelings for—"
I don’t know what came over me. But the urge to get rid of him was too much.
The words died on his lips. His eyes grew wide in shock as blood spluttered from his lips. "Wh... What did you just do?" His gaze went down to the knife I drove deep into his heart as he took a step back.
Though my hands shook, I tried not to show fear.
"What’s wrong, Storm?" I smirked, trying to act like I wasn’t bothered by the blood flowing out of the wound on his left chest. "Don’t you love me any more?" I mocked.
Though it hurts me to do what I did, I had to do so, for my safety.
If I don’t kill him now, he won’t hesitate to do the same to me, in the future...
I don’t want to make the same mistake Brys made.
His eyes rolled to the back of his head as he fell on the floor, still clutching that knife. There was a look of shock in his eyes as he tried to fight through the pain.
"Why?" He rasped as he tried to keep his breathing in check. His blood pooled around him, while I stood over him like a villain. I can’t tell why I felt bad instead of being fulfilled.
This is what I have been fighting for all these months. I’m supposed to be happy I completed the task. Instead, it felt like I was the one with a knife stuck in my chest.
"I hate you!"
With those words, I ran down the hall. However, instead of returning to the cafeteria like I would have done had Storm not approached me, I ran towards our dorm.
Luckily, there were no students in sight. Since they are all out to enjoy the one-hour break. I ran into my room and banged the door behind me before I broke down in tears.
My hands shook as I tried not to think of what just happened. I can’t believe I thrust a knife into his chest. Though this is what I have been going on about since I got here, I never thought I will go through with it.
"Goddess!"
I screamed when the image of a heartbroken Storm came to mind. The expression on his face when he asked his last question, broke my heart.
I joined my legs and placed my face on the hollow between them as tears began to fall. What will I do now? Will the system punish me for going against the plot? Will I be charged with murder?
"What’s wrong?" Fan asked, sounding concerned.
I sniffed before I raised my head to look at him. My punishment is here. Who knows what I will pay for my crimes against the Alpha?
The revenge I meticulously planned for months doesn’t feel liberating at all, it felt smothering. It’s as if my head is placed underwater with a sturdy hand preventing me from looking up.
"Brys!" He closed the distance between us. "What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Your eyes are too puffy and ugly!" He wrinkled his nose.
Had this been a normal circumstance, I would have laughed at the funny expression he made. But right now, I’m not in the mood. Instead of replying to his questions, I hastily wiped my eyes.
"So, what are the punishments I will receive?" It’s over. I’m now a murderer. Should this be Earth, I might serve a life sentence because of this.
"Punishments? Oh, talk of punishments, you have a task upgrade." He waved his hand in the air, and the same fancy gadget I was hoping for on the first day we met, showed up.
Against my better judgement, I was awed at the sight. My stupid system seems to be growing.
"I made a mistake on the first day we met. I apologize for most of the punishments I sent on you." He joined his index, trying to look pitiful.
Had I been in my right frame of mind, I would have yelled at him for deceiving and punishing me. However, I’m too far gone in guilt to think of anything else.
My heart kept on repeating those dreadful words — I stabbed Storm.
