Chapter 48: A stuttering Alpha

Brys

I hurried out of the principal’s office the moment he permitted me to leave. He didn’t want anything from me —just wanted me to meet his Parrot, Jammy.

He asked me about Storm and my relationship with him, as I fawned over the beautiful Parrot. And I truthfully answered. Nothing is going on between us. Storm is someone I’m trying to get rid of —I can’t possibly date him.

Mr Kim looked pleased with my answer, which was a bit confusing.

However, I didn’t voice those out because I’m afraid he might make me stay some more, so he could answer all my questions.

When I went to the library an hour after I left the principal’s office —I would have gone earlier, but a teacher took me by my collar and dragged me to the next class I had — Storm had long gone.

Ray was almost through, so I helped him out before we went for lunch. Fan hasn’t shown up since we went to the principal’s office; so I figured he might have returned to the room like he does whenever he doesn’t wish to follow me around.

"What do you want to do after this?" Ray’s eyes sparkled, "we have a free hour before our next class. Do you want to go swimming with me?" He looked excited, and his eyes gleamed with mirth.

"Ye—"

I started to say, but when I saw the familiar golden hair I had been searching for since morning, I rose from the chair. "I will be right back, love. We will go swimming after that." I leaned down and pecked him on his hair before I skidded out of the cafeteria.

Sky was long gone by the time I came out to the hall. I ran down the hall, past the students who were either conversing or strolling out of the building.

There were no signs of Sky. I stopped to take a breath as I glanced around. Aside from a student reading cross-legged on the floor, there was no other person around.

Could it be that Sky already left the building? But that’s not possible. I would have known if he had done that because when he left, he followed the door on the right, not the one on the left.

"Sky?" I called out, hoping he will hear my voice. The student —a Beta— who was reading, stared hard at me before he rose from the ground, dusted his butt and left without saying a word.

"Sorry, mate," I called out to him, but he didn’t spare me a glance. He just continued down the hall.

"Were you looking for me?" I was startled by the unexpected voice behind me. I turned, to see an amused Sky smirking at me. "What are you doing here?" His eyes gleamed.

"Tailing you, of course. Where have you been?" I placed both hands on my waist. Now that he is here, I feel this urge to tug on his right ear. "You weren’t in our morning classes!" I yelled at him.

Who knows, had he been there, those damned Alphas wouldn’t have approached us.

"I was trying to give you space. Moreover, I don’t think Ray will wish to see me." He shrugged, "I will just ask the teachers to change my class. This way, we won’t get to see each other aside from general studies once a week."

Though he looked happy, the tone of his voice didn’t sound happy at all. I can tell he doesn’t wish to change his classes.

"Do you have to go to such extreme? Why can’t we return to how we were before?" I so badly wish we can return to a time when we all spend time with each other without feelings trying to get in the way. I miss those good old days.

"I’m afraid we can’t." He raised his hand to touch my face but brought it down. "Have you thought about my proposal?" He slowly asked. "Do I still need to give you time to think it over?"

I wanted to ask him to give me more time, but I knew the answer to his question already. I don’t love him.

"No."

"Then... " He sounded so hopeful, it broke my heart at the thought that I’m about to disappoint him with my answer.

"I’m sorry, Sky. I can’t—" He placed a palm on my mouth.

"Don’t say anything any more." He shook his head, "I should have known that I’m nothing compared to a certain Alpha."

I tried to shake my head, but he pressed on tight.

"Please don’t say a word." He slowly removed his hand from my mouth and turned his back to me. "I need time alone, don’t look for me," he said before he ran down the hall.

"Sky!" I called out to him as I tried to take a step forward. However, my foot touched something solid. I leaned down and took it up. The knife looked ordinary enough, yet, the crest on the tip made me frown.

It looked —

"Fancy meeting you here, Strawberry?" Storm said in an amused voice as he approached me.

I hid the knife behind me before he could see it, and turned to face him. He has changed out of the uniform he was putting on earlier.

The bright red jeans he wore seemed to contrast with the green and yellow polo he was putting on.

"What are you doing here?" I tightly held the knife.

"Nothing, just passing." He closed the distance between us, "what are you doing out here while others are in the cafeteria?"

"... No... Nothing." I gulped, "I don’t think I have thanked you for saving me. Well, thanks. I appreciate your help!" I turned and made to leave, but he stopped me.

"I... "

"What’s it?" I tried to slip the knife into my shirt.

"... There’s something I want to tell you, Brys," he forced out.

I raised my brows at that. For him to call me by my real name instead of the pet name he has for me, this must be something serious.

"What exactly do you wish to tell me?" I would have folded my arms had it not been for the knife I had in hand.

"I... You... I. Like... I... You..." He stammered with his cheeks as red as a ripe tomato.

"What’s it? What exactly do you wish to tell me?" I impatiently asked, ready to leave should he delay any further.

"I love you!"
