Chapter 66: Mock Subjugation [4]
Ten whirling tornados crashed through the jungle, crushing everything in their path. They looked to be moving randomly, but it wasn’t anything of the sort.
Those ten tornadoes created a cage that trapped Yhima and the ground team in the relative vicinity. They could no longer escape, and if they attempted to do so, they would die.
Yhien’s attention was mainly on Yhima, but its awareness also kept track of the two people on the ground who smelled of the same energy that struck it prior.
For it, this was a time to watch as its rivals were crushed by its might.
But for everyone else, it was far too loud to entertain such a calm explanation.
WHOOOOOOOOSH!
The winds whipped ferociously even in areas the tornados weren’t destroying.
Sequencers had a modicum of control over "energy." The source of that energy was not Aether, but that could be explained during a less dire situation.
Raymond and the rest were using energy to coat their bodies and give themselves a little bit more defense and stability against the torrents. The river water flew into the sky in large batches and slammed down, turned into deadly projectiles the team was forced to dodge.
Yet, dodging meant facing the winds directly, and that was not an easy thing to do.
Everyone did their best to move to the locations Gio pointed out to them. Their eyes were off the battle in the sky, but the boy controlling them from the zephyr stayed fully aware of what was happening there.
’We did good damage.’
He squinted at a pair of screens nearby those projecting the ground team’s cameras. There, he could see live feed angles from the air outside the radius of the tornado storm.
They were attached to the twinjets the ground team used to land. Those two jets were being remotely controlled by operators so that they could provide an overarching view of the battle.
’We’ll be able to take Yhien’s right wing if I can find a chance for Amaya and Jax to land good hits. Leading it to the trap is pointless now, but the trap is still useful as long as the monster eventually steps in it.’
That would become much easier when the monster was grounded.
There was blood coloring the white feathers under its wing on the right side. It was bleeding from one eye and had several patches of exposed skin where its fur had been torn off.
It showed that its mind was still in great condition, but its body wasn’t invincible.
BOOM!
Gio’s eyes snapped to Yhima.
Suddenly, the monster slammed backwards. A great sound rang out as blood spurted from its beak.
CAA–
BOOM!
It couldn’t finish its cry before it was struck again. Comets of wind, roughly as tall as the average human male and as wide as a car, moved at an untraceable pace towards the bird.
Yhien flapped its wings casually, but those casual movements gathered immense amounts of power.
"Ulver, shoot forward!"
Gio put it into the fewest number of words hoping the message would be conveyed in time.
Ulver’s eyes widened at the urgency of his tone, but he still followed the order. He raised his hands rapidly and fired a small burst of energy into the air in front of him.
BOOM!
Wind pushed against his clothes, throwing his hood off his head. His eyes snapped to the side, allowing him to see the crater that had just been created.
Did he just...barely avoid death?
There wasn’t time to think about it.
"Focus your abilities and hold Yhien still for as long as you can! Give a signal before you act!"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Those wind comets continued to fly after Yhima. It circled and swirled in the air, twisting its body into a variety of positions to avoid the explosive force they contained. The comets joined the hurricanes in terrorizing the ground, so the battlefield certainly hadn’t become safer.
’But now’s the time.’
Yhien was completely focused on Yhima, thinking the bursts that hit the ground would be enough to deal with the petty humans.
"Jason, how confident are you in the air right now?"
"You want me to leave the ground in a situation like this?"
"You’re the heaviest one."
"Tch. I can get a shot off if that’s what you want."
"Good. Same position as before. Attack when Ulver gives the signal. Reveal yourself well so Yhien moves your way."
The two of them prepared for that movement. At the same time, Gio addressed Raymond.
"Is Mirei available yet?"
"Not until you hear the name ’Alice’ through comms."
"Understood. The storm will end soon. When that happens, light it up as soon as you can."
"Do you think I can create a fireball like that on its position?"
"I think if I’m going to be open and honest, you should do the same."
Raymond inadvertently smiled.
"Heard."
He looked up at the massive bird in the sky.
Until now, they still hadn’t directly faced the power of this monster, as they hadn’t directly confronted it, however...
"Moving!"
Ulver made his call.
He pushed his hands forward and released a snake of purple energy that turned into a blur that streaked across the sky.
Jason braced himself, bending his legs and mustering strength.
BOOM!
He propelled himself into the air like a rocket. At the same time, the purple snake entered the corner of Yhien’s vision.
The bird flapped its wings to push it away, but it was too late. It wrapped around its wing and snaked over its body, sinking into its skin.
Bzzt!
It heard an electric sound in its body as its mind lost its connection to its body for a second.
In the air, Jason raised his arms.
CRACKLE!
Lightning struck down from the sky, using him as a conduit for its journey. He gathered the force of nature within his bones and channeled it through his forearms as he aimed his palms at the monster in the distance.
It looked like that on the screens.
Everything went white as he let his power loose.
However, this time, there was a separate angle that could not be blinded.
Gio watched as a pure white beam of light that was hard to see as lightning pushed the atmosphere apart and crashed into the paralyzed Yhien.
GRAAAAAAAAAH–!
Yhien roared out in pain and fury as it was pushed back, yet, the lightning never truly made contact with its body.
The light beam struck a thin film of Aether the monster used to protect its body. It pushed into that film and did its best to break it, but somehow, that tiny layer was enough to repel the entire force of the blast.
Yhien wasn’t wounded by the attack, but that didn’t make it ineffective.
It lost its focus and was pushed back. The rhythmic thumping of its wings was interrupted, stopping the comets of wind it was pumping into the world. The roaring winds also abruptly calmed down to a more manageable level even if they were still roaring ferociously, making it easier to move.
The bird’s focus had been broken. The tornados were still spinning, but this was enough.
"Captain!"
And then flames appeared in the world.
As Gio said, if he was going to reveal himself a bit, Raymond needed to do the same.
Just...
"A bit" meant something entirely different in their two minds, apparently.
