Chapter 46: Blackwing Blood Serpent [6]
As Gio watched, the battle got further and further from him.
It was easy to see Natalia from an advantageous position. After all, she did have one. She was dealing with these beasts. It wasn’t the other way around.
However, it wasn’t a completely one-sided battle.
Those beasts fought back. They weren’t weak persimmons.
’Tier 4. All of them.’
Natalia was a Master Rank Sequencer, so they were equal to her level on paper.
In most cases, beasts were supposed to be stronger than humans at the same level. Humans liked to hunt in groups for that reason.
There were only a few exceptions to this rule.
Natalia possessed one of them.
BANG!
Her foot landed in the head of a beast that looked like an earth dragon. It was a fat draconic reptile without wings. Its back was instead adorned by jagged triangular spikes. There was a massive spiked ball on its tail meant to attack anyone who approached from behind, but it didn’t use that weapon against Natalia.
She was too fast. These beasts already regarded her as more than just a target.
She was a threat.
The earth dragon’s head slammed into the ground. It looked at Natalia with pure hostility in its eyes without a hint of pain.
The spikes on its back glowed with the light of Aether, directing Natalia’s eyes to them just before they flew out of the beast’s back and charged at her.
"Tch!"
She clicked her tongue and dematerialized, just barely avoiding the first of the explosive spines.
She reappeared only a few feet away, her eyes taking account of the situation. She judged her paths of escape, knowing that she had to avoid the explosions.
But she was facing multiple enemies. Some of them were injured, but none of them were dead.
She couldn’t wait until they reached the trap location to start killing. She needed to lighten the barrier on her head.
’The others aren’t here. They won’t arrive for a while.’
It was her job to protect the boy hiding deep in the tunnel until they did.
’Well, it’s still not too difficult.’
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The beast’s attacks flew wildly through the air, exploding when they made contact with anything. The foundation of the cave shook, forcing Natalia to retreat further out.
In reality, the beasts had the same goal as her.
The cave was too constraining. In reality, all of them had much more power than this, but none of them could make use of it.
After all, the limited space meant they couldn’t do large attacks without also endangering themselves. They didn’t want to work together even if they had the same goal, so each group focused on preserving itself while forcing Natalia away.
When they made it outside, she was dead.
Both sides had completely opposing thoughts.
But that was only because the beasts didn’t have the mental capacity to think that perhaps Natalia was in a similar situation.
In fact, she was even less restricted than them.
The only reason she fought so conservatively, using her Sequences sparingly, was because they were still close to Gio.
When they moved further away, the restrictions she had were slowly removed.
The amount of power she could show increased exponentially.
Whoosh!
Natalia retreated from the beasts. Those among them with speed followed her without hesitation.
One of the bison, the three wolves, and the serpents all stayed on her tail, but it was fine.
Facing them. She raised two fingers in front of her face.
[Bind]
The word that came out of her mouth seemed to have some sort of magical property. It was spoken ethereally, almost as if it didn’t come from Natalia’s mouth at all.
The moment it was spoken, though, the Sequences in her body responded.
The ground in front of her turned to blackness. From that blackness, shadowy tentacles arose, immediately grabbing the beasts that decided to follow her.
Shing!
She disappeared and reappeared, slashing her knife into the neck of a wolf beast. It was the same one she’d grabbed earlier. Its neck was torn open by her blade, spraying blood in all directions.
Awoooo!
The two remaining wolves howled in rage as she threw its body aside, but they were already secured by her.
She held her hand out and gripped her fists, commanding the tentacles she summoned.
[Break]
Their grip tightened, choking the wolves and cutting off their voices.
Tiny spikes manifested from the tentacles and dug into their skin, injecting them with darkness.
The energy was twisted along the movements of Natalia’s fists, blending the internals of those wolves into slush.
One could almost see the horror in their eyes before they lost their light.
ROOOAAAR–!
Her eyes turned to the side. As expected, the bison couldn’t be held for very long. It broke free of its constraints with brute strength, unlike the serpents who couldn’t find any way to untangle themselves.
It charged just as the bison before it had, but this one was a bit different.
VOOM!
A huge sound was produced by its movement. It wasn’t just glowing with a subtle hue. It was shining in a light so blinding that it genuinely affected Natalia’s eyes.
It charged with extreme speed that didn’t match its form at all. The thumping of its steps turned into a singular massive rumble in just a few meters.
Its horns glowed intensely as it lowered its head and swept up, trying to cut Natalia in half.
She barely moved her body to avoid it without dematerializing.
Her body was bathed in sunlight. As was the head of the bison.
And immediately, it happened.
BOOOOOM!
Gio didn’t understand what happened at first.
All of a sudden, the light coming into the cave was cut off. The entire space was wrapped in complete darkness for several seconds, through which he was forced to sit in anticipation.
Only when the cover rose did Gio realize that it wasn’t a natural darkness at all.
No, what fell and blocked the sun was a blade of darkness bigger than the cave entrance.
Natalia stood in the sunlight alone, the head of a bison beast to her side.
She watched as the eight beasts that were still alive approached her.
They saw the beasts near them die, but it didn’t concern them.
Because her strength felt about the same as theirs, their instincts told them the fight could still be won.
Natalia took several steps back before spreading her arms to the side.
She didn’t wait, knowing that her timing was already perfect.
Black tattoo lines were illuminated under her clothing by a glowing white light. There seemed to be nothing in her eyes but white as she focused completely on what she was doing.
Whoosh!
The winds kicked up around her, circling ominously as if a storm was soon approaching.
Only, what would approach when she finished was far worse than a storm.
Darkness oozed from her body and painted the ground, creating a portal to nothingness below her feet. Within that portal, the subtle complex patterns of some sort of circular array could be faintly recognized.
WHOOSH!
A massive gust of wind pushed through the world.
Around the same time, Natalia’s enemies arrived.
They encircled her, their bodies glowing with the light of Aether as they warily prepared to attack.
But it was already too late.
VOOOOOM!
The blackness below Natalia’s feet shot into the air, creating another portal in the sky. Standing with black mirrors both above and below, Natalia finally raised her arms into the air.
Darkness itself was prepared to answer her call and slay those who opposed her.
It sent to her a warrior, a star birthed for that purpose.
And as it was summoned, the world for several tens of kilometers was shadowed in a dark veil.
It was unbelievable that this was all possible because of a single sequence of genes.
