Chapter 45: Blackwing Blood Serpent [5]
Chapter 45: Blackwing Blood Serpent [5]
There were twelve beasts, but none of them were as massive as the blood serpent. They were all either reptilians or canines, all standing ten feet tall at the very least.
Gio was only able to catch sight of them for a moment before that dust cloud appeared.
Xiuuuuu!
BOOOOOOOOM!
The sound of the object’s descent was like a comet, and the impact rang out like the area had been bombed from above.
Gio covered his face with his hand again, clearing the vision through his visor with gritted teeth.
The object landed on the edge of the cave, not outside. It brought down the cave entrance and widened the hole generously with its sheer weight before even touching the ground.
And then it landed.
Gio had no idea what it was, but its presence didn’t make him happy. Anything that could create that kind of force was a problem. Whether it was an object or a living entity, it couldn’t be anything helpful.
He retreated as far into the tunnel as he could.
If there was one thing he could be happy about, it was the timing of that thing. Because of it, the beasts turned their attention in the other direction before they sensed him.
He was still safe within the cave.
For now, at least.
From the shadow of the now-still serpent corpse, he looked at the array of beasts in front of him as he waited for the dust cloud to clear up.
Two were serpents, another two were wolves, three of them were large bison-like creatures, and the rest were all lizards of assorted types.
’I can’t sense energy yet, so I can’t tell exactly what level they’re at.’
He could only confirm that if they were confident enough to come here and confident enough to stand against each other even while their attention was on the object that just appeared, they had to be powerful.
Their ambient growls and hisses filled the cave as they warned each other not to make any sudden movements. At the same time, their eyes warily glanced at the metallic thing that became visible through the dust.
It was cylindrical and completely opaque, made of black and grey metals that were cut and bolted together at sharp angles.
The object sat still for only a moment before emanating sound.
Psssh!
It hissed as puffs of steam left its sides. Soon enough, its whole front face lifted up, revealing its hollow insides.
And more importantly, the one inside.
Gio’s eyes widened.
’How...’
If he expected anyone to come to his rescue, it was Seb or the Old Lady’s people.
He never thought it would be a woman he’d only met once.
The moment the capsule opened, his eyes met with hers.
Black hair gently fell down her shoulders like a waterfall. Her eyes were sharp and piercing, gazing at even him like he was prey.
’This one was...Natalia.’
He remembered Raymond introducing them, but why was she here now?
Before he could think about it, she stepped out of the capsule.
"You seem to have a problem."
Her eyes scanned the twelve beasts in front of her. Their hostility towards each other was completely gone.
There was a human in front of them.
In front of humans, the grudges and struggles between beasts meant nothing.
Until the humans were exterminated, no beast would ever spend time fighting against another beast.
They wouldn’t give Natalia the time to make the first move either.
The first to move was one of the bison. It pushed its hooves into the ground, gathering a great amount of momentum as it pushed itself forward with its horns aimed at Natalia.
There was less than ten feet between them, so how was it able to gather so much speed?
From the ordinary human perspective, it couldn’t be seen unless the Original Gene had been strengthened to a certain perspective, however, since Gio formed his Aether Core, he was able to interact with those forces even if he couldn’t directly sense them until he’d trained.
The bison was surrounded by a clear yellow haze. The moment that haze arrived around its body, its speed suddenly increased drastically.
It was like a speeding bullet the size of a truck, and it reached her instantly.
Gio would have been flattened. That wasn’t a question.
Natalia, however, wasn’t the same as him.
She was part of a world that he couldn’t wait to enter.
Before the bison reached her, she had already covered her own body in a similar pitch-black aura.
The bison slammed its horns into Natalia’s body, but in response, she only raised her hand.
BOOM!
There was a massive impact. Gio almost wanted to look away when he imagined what would happen to him, but he kept his eyes glued to that woman.
Because this was the first time in this life that he’d be able to witness a Sequencer in action.
BOOM!
A second impact came. Before Gio could understand what was happening, the bison was standing on two legs and Natalia was on its back.
Tracking this fight from his perspective would be almost impossible considering Natalia’s level, but if one just gave oneself a bit of an advantage, it became much clearer.
Natalia pressed her hand out and grabbed the bison’s horn.
GRRR–!
It growled as it tried to put more force into its attack, but she was faster. Her leg raised off of the ground before slamming back down. A wave of energy spread from her body.
All of a sudden, an array of spikes rose from the bison’s shadow and stabbed into its underbelly. It jumped up on instinct, and Natalia was instantly ready to use the opportunity she’d created.
Her whole body faded into blackness, only becoming clear again when she was on its back.
And, she was no longer empty-handed.
Shing!
She had two daggers in her hands that moved fast enough to become a blur. Her arms remained black shadows despite the rest of her body materializing, moving those blades with immense precision and force.
ROOOOAR–!
The bison roared in pain as its tough skin was cut apart like butter. Blood splattered onto Natalia’s face, but she ignored it completely as she dug a hole into the bison’s back and stabbed the first organ she found.
As it burst, she jumped off the beast, just in time to avoid the gaping maw of a wolf beast. She dropped her dagger and it disappeared into shadow. Her hand went around the wolf’s neck, holding it in place.
It almost looked impossible for an ordinary-sized human woman to hoist such a massive wolf. The fact that she did it with ease made her even more impressive.
Awoooo!
However, the other wolves were not happy with her actions.
They immediately charged. One stayed low, sweeping its claws at her legs. The other stood back and opened its mouth.
A ball of Aether was formed in its maw. As it roared, the energy shot at Natalia and exploded.
BOOM!
The sound of the explosion covered up the sound of the second wolf’s sharp claws cutting through the air.
One had to wait for the dust to clear to see what had happened, but Natalia didn’t have that kind of patience.
She was already on the move.
Before either of those attacks touched her, she’d turned into a puddle of blackness and shifted across the ground. She dropped the wolf she was holding, allowing it to take the hits for her while she switched targets.
She went for the lizards next, creating chaos among them before targeting the rest.
She understood that these beasts had come in groups and not alone. Instead of separating those groups, she forced them apart and made them focus wholly on her.
That way, they wouldn’t notice anything else she did.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
BANG!
Explosions rang out as the beasts continued to attack. Natalia’s form was that of mist as she avoided it all and controlled the battlefield.
They didn’t even know that they were being led out of the cave to create an opening for Gio.
They didn’t know that the moment they left the cave, they’d be directly in the middle of her trap.
But they would soon find out exactly that.
For Gio, they may have been powerful, but for Natalia, they were the same as any others.
Dealing with them was no different from what she’d already done countless times.
