Chapter 261: Bloodless Crypt [5]

The group continued their investigation. Books containing language they couldn’t understand were useless, but the words weren’t the only things present.

There were many diagrams that were more than just interesting. Some of them looked similar to the human research they found about Sequences.

Serene was the one who collected those. She saw the Sequence research personally, so she was able to make the most connections.

Neriah and Shiro moved past the bookshelves into a new area they discovered. It contained several old storage crates and containers that the duo was currently looking through.

As for Gio, he was reaching the end of his interpretation duties.

’It’s not as dissimilar as I was treating it to be.’

Actually, the language of the past could still be related to the languages existing in the current age. It was a bit difficult to make the first few connections, but it only became easier with every new discovery.

Gio’s [Memory Boom] made it possible for the process to be compressed into a matter of minutes. He could see every letter and its relative adjacent. Using them, he was able to slowly rearrange the words in the books around him until he could make out what they were saying.

’Most of them are diaries.’

They told stories of the same days from several different perspectives. Almost every journal he picked up was signed with a new name.

They were the final remaining wick of these humans’ existence. Their names no longer existed anywhere else.

Putting those aside, Gio found himself in a goldmine.

The humans who built this church and crypt kept their personal lives separate from everything else. They spoke about their encounters with the world around them, sure, but they never included detailed information in their personal diaries.

That information was all present within specific books that had been created and placed together on a shelf of their own to explain to any future humans about their experiences.

Gio didn’t read any of them fully. He stared intensely at their pages and flipped through them, saving every word into his personal repertoire even if he didn’t comprehend a single one.

He was going over the books in his mind and actively translating their pages.

’This passage is talking about the habits of several monster species. This part is saying that they uncovered new information that suggests monsters aren’t as unified of a race as we thought, and after that...’

Gio read deeper in search of real information. Translating the more complicated sections took much longer, so he was only able to see the most rudimentary parts of the ancient humans’ discoveries.

’This room is relatively safe. I should have enough time to figure it out.’

As Gio stayed in the corner and focused on his books, Serene eventually joined Neriah and Shiro, who were excitedly opening crates in the other room.

Their excitement stemmed from the rewards they found within.

"All of this stuff is fresh, right? How is that possible?" Shiro asked with sparkling eyes.

"I don’t know either, but that’s not what’s important right now," Neriah responded.

"I don’t know what kind of blood is in those vials and I don’t know what all of this meat, leather, and fur comes from, but..."

It didn’t matter. Raw materials always sold for decent prices. Raw materials that came from an ancient time and from an unknown world, on the other hand, were priceless.

If they were tested and found to be compatible, the four of them could commission elixirs with these materials and use them to grow stronger. Anything that wasn’t compatible could be sold for a huge profit. It was a true win-win situation.

"How good is your litepack? Shiro asked, glancing at the pouch on Neriah’s back.

"I have a small-medium. It’s not great, but it’s enough," she responded.

Storage Holes were reserved for the uber-rich. Litepacks were ordinary people’s replacements for them.

They didn’t contain warehouses of space and weren’t completely detached spaces from the world. Litepacks were simply backpacks with expanded space that could lighten the weight of the objects they held.

All three of them came prepared with litepacks, but each size of litepack was exponentially more expensive than the last.

Neriah’s medium-sized pack gave her about a square meter of space. Shiro was a little worse off than her, so he had a small pack that was about half the size. Nevertheless, as she said, it was more than enough.

The two of them divided the spoils between themselves so neither had to carry most of the weight before grabbing Serene and returning to the main library area where Gio was.

"How is it? Did you find anything?" Neriah asked.

"Not yet," Gio responded, sounding much calmer.

"But that’ll change once I have enough time to look through everything properly. We can move on first and I can focus on it later."

The important part was that the information he had been searching for was securely in his hands. Even if he couldn’t read it anymore, just the confirmation helped his mood greatly.

As Neriah and Shiro filled him in on what they’d found and Serene said a bit about the graphs she’d been reading, the four of them exited through the same door they entered through.

Whoosh!

There was an immediate wave of wind. Shiro, Neriah, and Serene were all forced to the sides. As their bodies slammed into the side walls of the catacombs, a rain of sparks flew into the air around Gio.

He didn’t have time to raise a weapon. The sparks were coming from an impact against the barrier he hastily put up. It shattered not long after, but he was already prepared by then.

Clang!

Two swords came into contact as a third swung in from the side, attempting to take Gio’s head off. Silver energy leaked from the blade like an unruly vine that whipped across his neck with a sharpness that could cut diamond.

He didn’t need an introduction to his opponent. She caught him by surprise and forced him into a corner that he couldn’t escape from. The only way to get past her was to–

Bang!

A huge star of silver energy suddenly slammed into Gio’s position, forcing him to move. A white hue leaked from his feet, forcing the ground itself to shift positions and take him out of the blast’s range.

He drew a new sword after putting away Hekat’s power as soon as possible and faced his enemy.

She, who arrived with such a strong presence, backed off and glared at his feet before looking back at his eyes.

"You’re related to him. You and that guy..."

She seemed to have noticed something about Hekat’s power, but she couldn’t pinpoint what it was.

Gio narrowed his eyes.

’She’s talking about back then.’

He could tell that her eyes contained real recognition. She genuinely believed that he was a different person with a connection to the masked persona he played in the Wasteland.

"He was also hostile..." she muttered before looking back at the people she’d come with.

They weren’t the same ones ordering her in the chamber earlier. If she was with the same group, she wouldn’t have had the confidence to act out.

However, unlike those people, these few had no choice but to listen to her orders.

"Subdue them. Don’t kill until I tell you to."

They already knew not to aim for the target she set her sights on. At once, the four combatants split and charged at Neriah, Shiro, and Serene. Gio gritted his teeth and moved towards them, only to be stopped by two voices.

"If you don’t follow me, I’m going to give the order."

"We can find you when we’re done! Go and don’t worry about us!"

One came from his enemy, and the other from a friend he thought didn’t understand his thoughts.

It didn’t matter which of the three said it when they shared similar opinions, but Gio kept a mental note of the voice.

He could trust them to handle themselves against enemies that were suppressed to their same level of strength.

He had someone else to focus on.
