Chapter 211: Two Paths [1]

Chapter 211: Two Paths [1]

First years had limited options, as they were expected to learn the fundamentals before moving on to specialized classes; however, there were exceptions every single year.

All a first year needed to do to receive permission to take classes beyond the fundamentals was prove that they had the required knowledge. Though there were several basic courses on his schedule, they would only last a week at most.

His true selections were much more specific.

’I actually don’t need most of the Sequencing courses at this school.’

He put himself down for two practical training courses and a few he could use to hone his skills, but almost everything else was reserved for academics.

’Half of the plan is to grow a stronger humanity through genes and bloodlines. The other half is to improve technology so the Gehenna Complex becomes a fortress that protects us.’

He had knowledge of technologies from the future, however, he didn’t necessarily understand how they worked. He wanted a baseline of knowledge he could use to converse with the more studious people of this world.

’I can’t expect to gain status in academic societies without having the brain to back it up. The same way we value strength, they value intelligence.’

He didn’t forget about Farrah. His connection at Taurus-Rauth was just as important as any connections he could make at this academy.

A student’s school day could be from a minimum of six hours long to a maximum of twelve hours long. Gio had ten hours’ worth of courses selected by the time he submitted his paper, drawing a sidelong glance from the professor.

He said nothing, allowing the students to make any mistakes they wanted to make. They would learn the results of their decisions with time, and it would shape the way they continued their education.

Since he was unwilling to comment, the course selection proceeded without much trouble. Everyone chose the classes they wanted and submitted their papers, allowing for the start of the first class of the year.

As expected, they learned the most basic information they needed to know.

Concepts such as Gene Housing, the absorption of Gene Sequences, the inheritance of Bloodline Sequences, and the way to grow in power were explained in simple terms over the course of an hour and a half.

In the meantime, Serene took the course selection papers to the main office. It only took an hour and a half for the information of every student to be checked and processed. Some were called into different offices if they needed to sort out any details, but Gio was not one of them.

He sat next to Neriah and quietly listened to the lecture until it was over. After what felt like a very long time, Professor Sainz finally ended his words and dismissed them.

"It’s true that all of you only just submitted your courses, but your day is not over. You will receive messages soon enough that confirm your selections. Until then, or rather, for the first week, you are required to take basic courses until you are all accustomed to life at this institute."

Was there a need to talk about it?

Not necessarily.

The basic academic courses, like math and science, were no different from classes found at any other school. The only difference was that conditioning and training courses were also included in the mandatory schedule.

Gio also wasn’t looking for friends. He was looking for allies, sure, but they would reveal themselves as time went on. At least when it came to the classes he attended after homeroom, there weren’t many obviously special people or names he knew.

He and Neriah were together in their strength and conditioning courses as well, only being separated during academic periods. As such, he had someone to talk to if he ever got bored.

Otherwise, nothing special happened. Gio couldn’t help but stand out, but none of that mattered. He had no interest in showing off in front of people who were weaker than him. He only did so to reach his goals.

By the end of the week, practically all teachers and professors who had him in their classes confirmed that he was far past the point of needing to attend them.

"In fact, it might be better to put him in second-year classes. Staying at the same learning level as his peers might harm him."

"On the other hand, giving him too much of a burden would do the same. Have you seen his course selection sheet?"

"Yes. He already understands where he is, and it looks like he already knows where he wants to go. This kind of student..."

The conversations among the faculty didn’t revolve only around him. There were plenty of talented students who existed alongside him, after all.

Merely, while they presented themselves like young geniuses, the way he planned and acted seemed far more experienced.

It was as if he received all of the training he needed before ever reaching the First Institute.

"Well, he’s still a new student."

At the end of the day, they were educators, and he was a student. They could guide him only as much as he needed and accepted their guidance.

He was classified as a student to watch. With even the Headmaster subtly voicing the fact that he was paying attention to Gio and two or three others, many faculty members had their eyes on him before they saw his face for the first time.

Gio and Neriah were among only ten students in their class of several hundred who were allowed to skip past all of their basic classes.

And starting from the next week, the true school year began.

In the morning, Gio attended classes in math and science. His focus was split between engineering and research, but he absorbed all of the information like a sponge.

He attended his physical courses one after another without any breaks once it started reaching the later hours of the afternoon, going along with the flow of the school.

’It’s certainly intense, but not to an unbelievable degree.’

The courses he took were mostly filled with second-year students. However, there wasn’t an expectation for one to have been at the institute for a year before attending the courses.

They still started with fundamentals, only at a much higher level.

For instance, the first practical training class he attended was exclusively spent sparring with the other students.

It was beneficial in many ways. He couldn’t deny that.

However, regardless of how good the institute’s education system was, nothing changed the fact that he didn’t necessarily need it. None of his reasons for traveling to the First Institute had anything to do with learning.

Students were required to stay on campus only until classes were officially over. When they were on their own time, they were allowed to visit Celestelle as much as they wanted.

Leaving the floating island wasn’t allowed without a pass, but Gio didn’t need one.

Whenever he was not training in or out of class, he was in the city.

He’d already informed Farrah about his enrollment in the First Institute, so she wasn’t surprised to see him enter the lab through its proper doors and request an appointment with her.

In fact, she accepted his request faster than he expected and allowed him into the lab.

"Welcome back," she said with a smile.

It had been some months since they’d last seen each other. Gio didn’t visit the lab too often, but he’d volunteered himself as an intern several times in the year he spent training with his father.

Though he wasn’t necessarily known in the lab and didn’t have any achievements, Farrah was still willing to somewhat invest in his potential.

Well, she was willing as long as he showed that he wasn’t planning to waste her backing on nothing.

Gio accepted her greeting with a smile.

He was too far away to do so previously, but the situation had changed. Now that he was in Celestelle, he only needed to drive half an hour to reach the building.

In the First Institute, he would build his reputation as a Sequencer.

And with Taurus-Roth, he would build his reputation as an innovator.

Humanity’s new era began here in Celestelle.
