Chapter 208: Entering The Academy [4]

The Headmaster didn’t keep them for long. He got their accounts of the incident and a more precise location to search for the remains of the legacy site. There was no need to involve students in any of the further processes.

Of course, the Bloodline Enhancers they’d been promised as a reward for their efforts also couldn’t be given to them immediately. For circumstances’ sake, the two young students were led back to the infirmary, where they joined a group of other expelled students.

Those who had been denied entry to the academy were already gone. The rest were led to an open area outside the school where a stage and podium were set up.

They arrived alongside the last of the students who had properly completed the entrance ceremony. When everyone was gathered, the proceedings began.

The Headmaster appeared on the stage as if the students he faced weren’t looking up at him with fear in their eyes.

They’d learned well to have no expectations for an easy life.

"Good afternoon, students."

It was still too early to say it was the evening. The greeting was cordial and didn’t hold much meaning, but it instantly silenced the already hushed crowd.

"Today, we welcome you to your first year at the First Institute. It is just as monumental of an achievement as it sounds..."

The speech that ensued was as ordinary as ordinary could be. The persona of the Headmaster that these students had seen over the past week was completely gone, replaced with the image of a pristine and orderly Headmaster who had respect for the institution he ran.

The speech was broadcast across the world. It was the only part of the entrance ceremony the world got to see, and soon after, it became clear why the world was never able to learn much more.

The ordinary speech came and went, passing in and out of the crowd’s ears. It was followed by a small award ceremony for those who finished in the first to fifth place in the forest.

The students clapped.

A short silence followed as the cameras cut off, leaving the public with an unstained image of the First Institute.

That was when the real speech began.

The Headmaster’s eyes instantly went cold. A wave of pressure rushed over the students.

"Did you all enjoy your time in the Great Northern Forest?"

The smile that Gio and Neriah witnessed up close presented itself again. They looked at each other with wry expressions, already aware of what was coming.

They’d already been foreshadowed.

The Headmaster’s role was that of a "villain."

There were other teachers and faculty members who could be heroes and role models in their lives. The alumni of the First Institute always respected and honored its traditions and codes out of respect for those teachers.

Their Headmaster, however, was their enemy. He was a man who would do anything to make their lives more difficult, and their goal over the next four years was to persevere through his trials and defeat him, albeit in a more metaphorical fashion.

The speech put fear into the young students and made them wonder if attending this institute was the right decision.

However, it also lit a spark in their hearts. It put the spirit of vengeance inside of them, making them want to fight against the unfairness the Headmaster presented them with.

It was the first spark of the same spirit that would eventually allow them to face the strongest of monsters and beasts without fear.

’The philosophy is definitely unconventional and a little extreme, but I can’t argue with the results.’

The Headmaster’s role was only a part of the whole, but if it was a part that brought the rest down, it would have already been replaced.

"...so, if any of you have any complaints, you can challenge me at any time. If you pass the trial I give you, you’ll be rewarded just as well as he."

He pointed to the boy who finished in first place and received a Bloodline Enhancer. Spotting Gio and Neriah in the crowd nearby, he flashed a knowing look before finishing up.

"Tomorrow, you’ll be greeted by the Teacher’s Assistant in charge of your homeroom class. They will lead you there, where you will handle course registration for the year. Until then, you’re free to explore the campus or go back to your dorms and sleep. I don’t care what you do with your free time."

He scanned his gaze over them one more time, making every single student feel as if they had been personally targeted.

"I’ll be watching your progress. Do well, or this won’t be the last time you experience hell."

Seeming pleased with his little rhyme, the Headmaster walked off, followed by the 3 Deans and the other faculty members who were on the stage with him. Those remaining were student representatives who guided any students who needed help.

Gio waved back at Serene, who spotted him from her position among them, before looking back at where the student dorms were located.

"You’re going back to your room?" Neriah asked.

Gio shrugged.

"I don’t know. On one hand, we rested a lot before we got here. On the other..."

"The reward, huh?"

"Yeah. That guy Rhys who won first place was taken away to get his. I doubt it’ll be the same for us since our reward is being kept low-key, and I also doubt that they’ll come find us if we go exploring."

Therefore, if the goal was to receive the reward as fast as possible, the best thing they could do was return to their respective rooms.

"I want to look around," Neriah said.

"Then do–"

"I can’t do it. If you’re growing stronger, I cannot lag behind. Don’t underestimate the sincerity of my desire to surpass you."

She returned to a sterner manner of speaking as if to nail the point into his head.

He had no choice but to respect it.

"You should get back to your room, then," he said, grinning at the expression on her face.

She should’ve expected it. If she didn’t know that he was this kind of person, she never would have taken him as a rival.

He wasn’t going to slow down for her sake. He wasn’t going to slow down for anyone’s sake, because none of them would be able to stay alive if he slowed down. If Neriah wanted to catch up, then she’d have to live up to her sincerity.

After exchanging a few more words and a farewell, the two of them had already gone to their separate dormitories.

They entered their rooms at similar times, and at equally similar times, they were visited in the quiet dorms by people dressed like servants who handed them briefcases before leaving.

Gio opened his and took out the syringe contained within.

It was none other than the Bloodline Enhancer he’d been looking forward to.

"Bloodline Evolution" was a complicated process. Bloodline Enhancers technically only helped with a part of said process...

But that was a matter to think about afterwards.

Naturally, only a few more seconds passed before the was injected into Gio’s veins.
