Chapter 185: Entrance Ceremony [5]
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Suddenly, Gio felt like he was in a real fight.
Serene was good. She was a strong fighter, but she wasn’t equipped to deal with him. His range could be adjusted at will, while she was exclusively a ranged dealer.
When he approached, there wasn’t much she could do besides push him back. When he refused to be pushed back, she was cornered.
No matter what, she was still only around sixteen or seventeen. She had a lot to learn before she could cover all of her weaknesses.
Neriah didn’t have that same problem. Her Sequence wasn’t nearly as flashy. In fact, other than when she first summoned her weapons, the only signs of a Sequence were in her physical attributes.
But Neriah knew how to fight.
’No, this girl knows how to kill.’
Gio’s eyes narrowed as he concluded that large, energy-based attacks weren’t the way to win this battle.
The sword he summoned on instinct disappeared from his hands and was replaced by a spear.
With it, he fought his newest enemy.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
It was a fast-paced battle.
Neriah was like a cheetah. She moved incredibly quickly and pounced with the force to throw anyone weaker off balance.
She used two swords, which was usually not advised for young people who didn’t even know how to wield one properly, but it was clear she’d been trained from young.
Her every swing was clean and precise. Every movement aimed to cause damage or kill. Not an ounce of energy was wasted.
To the best of Gio’s discernment, her style was to aim for weak points.
Clang!
He used the shaft of his spear to block another swing that slammed down towards his head, only to see another blade stabbing towards his heart.
He twisted his body, angling his spear upward and throwing her second sword to the side. Using the same momentum, he slashed down at her shoulder.
Clang!
Bzzt!
His spear was thrown away with a strange electrical noise. Neriah charged in again, closing the little bit of distance he had made easily.
She was a fan of slashes and cuts, but they were almost all feints. They would deal damage if one allowed them to strike, but they were really hiding her most lethal strikes.
Like an assassin moving through the night, Neriah was accustomed to stabbing at vitals when she saw a chance to end the battle.
Even now, in this friendly environment, she barely adjusted her aim to ensure that any injuries she caused weren’t fatal.
As someone who’d fought much more severely than Gio, she’d already seen the protection mechanisms in place to keep the students safe. She didn’t concern herself with the possibility of actually killing someone.
Bang!
Suddenly, her eyes widened as she was pushed back.
The blue burst that threw her away also pushed Gio forward. He turned his spear into a sword and equipped a dagger in his other hand, entering a much closer range than he was previously fighting at.
’I have to be unpredictable.’
He had to combine weapon styles and create a battle where his movements couldn’t be predicted or read.
’She’s able to learn how I use each weapon within twenty or thirty exchanges of me using them.’
It was either the sign of an incredible Sequence or an incredible talent. Regardless, Gio didn’t have the freedom to fight as casually as he had been.
It was still deep into the nighttime, but neither of them was obstructed in the slightest.
Gio felt normal, but Neriah...
It was like she became stronger with every minute that passed. The deeper they went into the darkness, the more strength she was able to draw from her muscles.
The clearing where Gio had set up his tent was already destroyed. The trees around them were standing strong, but they were shaking back and forth as their foundations were threatened.
From the distance, one could only see two lights. One was hazy and white, while the other was a virtual blue.
They clashed over and over again, constantly moving back and forth through the clearing as Gio and Neriah exchanged momentum.
Neriah’s eyes narrowed. Gio started to mirror her fighting style in some ways, focusing on the ways of an assassin.
She frowned as his dagger came close to her neck. When she approached, she didn’t expect a fight like this.
’First place is not this strong.’
She avoided challenging the person in first place to prevent unnecessary hassles. She was planning to wait until the final day to steal his points.
She only targeted Gio because she could put a face to the name, as she’d seen him in the very beginning when he was challenging the first rock formation.
Back then, he looked decently strong, but not incredibly so. He looked like someone who was worth the standing he was at and nothing more.
She approached him believing he was such a person, but it was clear that he was nothing of the sort.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
She swung the sword in her right powerfully, turning the trajectory of Gio’s blade away from her.
His entire arm was pushed away, but it was replaced by his left, aiming for her throat with a dagger.
Neriah pushed it away with the back of her hand, kicking into Gio’s chest to make space for her blade to slash through.
However, he still managed to move in time, and he still managed to come back to counter her.
His sword was practically glued to his hand. Neriah knew that she could deal critical damage in the time Gio took to resummon his sword. She only had to create a necessity for its resummoning.
She aimed at his wrists, slashing them, slapping them with the butt and flat of her blade, and even attacking them directly with her own arms and legs.
Yet, his sword and his dagger never fell away or dispersed.
"Tch."
Neriah clicked her tongue.
It was annoying that she couldn’t release them from his grip.
It wasn’t a matter of his Sequence. His grip strength was at a level that her force couldn’t break.
’This is not enough.’
There were vultures approaching. She could sense them on the horizon.
’It is not worth 200 Points.’
She wouldn’t allow the vultures to see her in a weakened state. She had made too many enemies to allow it.
’I must end this now. Otherwise, I flee.’
There was no shame in running away. If there was nothing to gain, was there even a point in staying?
Neriah suddenly pushed her foot into the ground and shot backward. Gio, who was in the middle of attacking, stumbled and caught his balance before looking at her warily.
"Giovani Atmos. I will remember your name."
Was it said out of respect?
Gio didn’t have time to consider it.
Neriah raised her swords into the air. A massive amount of energy gathered from the air all around her and imbued itself into the blade.
And then she swung them directly into the ground.
Boooom!
A huge sound resounded as the clearing was split apart.
She declared it here.
It wouldn’t be as simple as merely crossing swords anymore.
