Chapter 160: First Sequence [4]
Chapter 160: First Sequence [4]
’I’ve never been here before, but it really is a good place.’
As Gio walked the aisles and looked for the Sequence he was seeking, he expressed his admiration for everything he passed by.
’Regardless of what kind of Sequencer I wanted to be, I’d be able to find the right Sequence here. My Atmos Clan is young. My father is its first real Clan Head. He really did a good job preparing for the future.’
With this kind of stock, they’d be able to raise an army of powerful Sequencers if they only had the time to gather the talent.
’Was that why they attacked in the past? Was Father taking the clan too high for their tastes, or is there something deeper?’
With questions flowing through his mind, Gio came to a stop in front of a specific shelf.
All of the Sequences looked relatively similar. The only difference was the color of floating particles within, which somewhat indicated what the Sequence was like.
The one Gio’s eyes landed on had dark blue particles floating in the light blue fluid, creating a mirage-like effect. It was a sign of a Type 3 Metaphysical Sequence.
The label in front of the Sequence had only two words on it.
[Virtual Manifestation]
"Ah, that one," Kyrian said, approaching from behind.
"Most of these have proper descriptions about their effects since they were tested many times before they landed in our hands, but that one is different. I took a risk after hearing its effects from a trusted source and won it at auction. It’s said to be able to ’control virtual space,’ but I’m not entirely sure of what that means."
Gio nodded. If one wanted to be as vague as possible, it was a good way to describe the Sequence’s abilities. However, that was only the case if one wanted to be as vague as possible.
’When he says "virtual space," Father probably thinks it has to do with technology in some way.’
There were Technomancers in this world who used their Sequences to control technology. With the right skills, they could become very useful tools, which was why Kyrian decided to fight for the Sequence at auction.
’But it’s not similar to that at all.’
Such abilities were classified as either Physical Sequences or Psychic Sequences.
This one was a Metaphysical Sequence.
’Because the virtual space it’s referring to isn’t anything related to technology. It’s a metaphysical dimension of space that exists concurrently with the one we know. It’s a "virtual space" that we can’t ordinarily touch. And by controlling that virtual space...’
The possibilities of the Sequence were limitless.
[Virtual Manifestation], it was called.
But it truly was so much more than that.
"This is the one, Father," Gio said, his eyes never leaving that vial.
"I can feel it. This is the Sequence I want."
Kyrian looked at his son’s eyes that couldn’t peel away from the glass and smiled.
He remembered the day he found his first Sequence as well. It truly was a memorable experience.
"Are you sure? It’s true that you’ll be able to Gene Swap if you don’t like it, but swapping too many times is dangerous and it can’t be done often. You’ll be stuck with [Virtual Manifestation] for at least half a year if you don’t want to be left with no Sequences for the same amount of time."
Despite his warning, Gio nodded again.
"I’m sure. This is the one."
Without another word of doubt, Kyrian nodded his head and accepted Gio’s choice.
"So be it."
He placed his hand on the glass and used his own genetic code as a password to open it. After taking [Virtual Manifestation] out, he closed and locked it again before looking at Gio.
"I assume you don’t want to wait to absorb this?"
"I don’t want to wait for even a single second."
Kyrian smiled.
"That’s what I thought."
And before any time passed at all, they were in Gio’s room again.
"Absorbing a Gene Sequence is much easier than inheriting a Bloodline. I will inject the Sequence into your Housing and it should settle on its own, but I still want to be here in case anything happens."
Gio inherited a Bloodline Sequence in this very house without making him aware. He couldn’t do anything about the dangers of that situation, but he could make sure to prevent anything that could happen here.
He led Gio to the bed and had him lie down with his shirt off. The needle attachment this time was much longer and thinner than the one used for Bloodline Sequences as it needed to penetrate deep past the flesh.
"It might hurt at first, but that’s the only pain you’ll have to experience. It won’t be a drawn-out experience," Kyrian said as he lined the needle up.
"Are you ready?"
Gio nodded.
In the next second, he felt a sting from the bottom of his rib cage that spread all the way to his heart. He gritted his teeth and gripped the sheets, but no sounds of pain leaked from his mouth.
The blue and viscous liquid in the vial was transferred into his body over the course of a few seconds as the pain intensified, but the moment the needle was taken out of his body, it was over.
Gene Slots were almost like vials of their own, and as the liquid flowed out of the needle, it was drawn to the first of four in Gio’s body. Gradually, all of it entered the vial and became a part of him.
Gio’s eyes turned bright blue as the Sequence’s energy spread through his body. It molded into his genetic code, becoming his power as if it had always existed in his body.
Sparks of blue electricity leaked from his pores, popping in the air and causing small tufts of smoke to fill the room.
In Gio’s head, he could see the Sequence itself.
He saw a massive cube of virtual space, a blue and ethereal figure almost like a hologram.
He walked towards it and placed his hand on it, feeling its power well up.
[Virtual Manifestation]
The words appeared in his head. Humanity never figured out why Sequences had names. They were not the ones to name them.
Nevertheless, those names were powerful.
By grabbing hold of those names...
Gio’s mind was filled with information. In a flash, every single piece of [Virtual Manifestation]’s power was perfectly explained to him. It happened in a fraction of a second, so quickly that even the greatest genius would only be able to absorb small pieces of it.
The rest would slowly come back as one grew, opening one to more benefits of their Sequence slowly.
However, did it need to be explained again?
All of that information was his to access whenever he wanted it.
This perk of the [Memory Book] combined with the nature of absorbing a Sequence was the sole reason why he didn’t die on the second floor of the Tower of Babel.
And now, it was the reason why he’d be able to progress through the growth of this Sequence at a rate others would find unimaginable.
No matter how much he wanted to deny it in the past, it truly was as if he was always meant to end up as a Sequencer.
