Chapter 241: Those Gentle Hands-II

Chapter 241: Those Gentle Hands-II

Renard who had caught her in time before she could fall over, held her tight with his hands. He shared a look with Karnala as they then turned their gaze back at the blood that had filled the hallway. Though they only shared a glance, words seemed to be comprehended by the two. They didn’t need words to understand how odd this was. This amount of blood should have been deadly, detrimental to a vampire, much less a human!

Judging by how Arabella was the only one here with her dress all colored in red and her hair that had turned bright red now, it was only right for them to guess that all this blood belongs to her.

It belongs to her. Yet? She was still alive. Although dizzy, and swaying with a pained expression, she was alive.

Not long after a man named Malvis was brought in front of them.

Arabella could feel her head aching as a medicine pressed into her open wound with a round cotton ball.

Renard bends his knees down, sitting in front of her while she turned at him, "You should go after Cassius," she suggested, "I’ll be fine here."

Renard shook his head, "His Highness could deal with it alone, I’m sure of it. While Karnala is strong enough to protect you, I have a duty to answer him, to make sure that he wouldn’t have to lose another person precious to him."

Arabella couldn’t deny to his words and with a frown she pulled her hands to her face, "What should I do? How could I... tell him how sorry I am?"

Renard and Karnala stared at each other, confused.

Arabella then continued, "If he hadn’t been involved with me. If he hadn’t looked into the sorcerers because of me, Marissa... she wouldn’t have been a target to them."

Karnala walked to stand beside her, shaking her head, "Regardless they would come for his Highness. He is the one to become the King of this kingdom. Although the current King have all the authority to control this land, it’s His Highness who would have to dive himself into the danger and that would ruffle the sorcerer’s feather, causing them to fight back against him."

Renard firmly nod, "You don’t have to feel guilty for what have happened. His Highness himself couldn’t bear to live another day if he had to constantly blame himself, could he? Besides, though it is worrying that Princess Marissa is the target, we also have to find out what had happened to you."

Arabella blinked. When her gaze settled on the glass door in front of her, she froze.

Her reflection stared back, those green eyes, brighter than she had ever seen them. Vivid, almost luminous. There was something unnatural about them now, something inhuman.

And her hair, once a soft, muted brown with hints of red, now burned with a richer, deeper crimson. Subtle, perhaps, to a stranger. But Arabella, who had memorized every inch of herself before Iliza struck, saw it instantly.

She remembered waking up from the drowning. Her eyes had changed then too, shifting from their usual mossy hue to something clearer, sharper. Alive in a way that unnerved her.

Was this another sign?

Had the blow to her head... killed her again?

And if so, what, exactly, had come back?

A shiver ran down her spine as she turned to Renard and explained, "I saw someone hit my head, it was Iliza."

"I don’t recall that name," said Renard, "But seems you are familiar with her, it isn’t one of the people you saw in the castle, but a slave?"

Arabella nodded her head, "The one who have now served Minister Rueben."

And Renard’s eyes turned sharp, "That means Rueben had somehow became an ally to those sorcerers, even hiding and helping them."

"Or that Iliza works alone," Karnala suggested. She then turned to Renard, "I know you dislike that snake minister but you should know that to accuse him, we need a concrete evidence, not just the fact that we saw his servant hit Miss Arabella."

"But for now," Karnala then continued, "We could bring her to the dungeon and keep a watch on her. Although as much as I would like to do that now, it would be best for us to wait for His Highness and his order first."

They then turned to look at the path Cassius had taken, all thinking the same, wishing that nothing bad had taken place to Marissa.

By the time Cassius had stopped to find Marissa’s carriage, he noticed how it had turned empty. His sister was nowhere to be found, the place so empty that Hans wasn’t even inside anymore.

He then looked around, finding the traces of blood in the air which meant Marissa had been here and fought against those sorcerers.

He followed the scent, continuing into the forest and frowned when he saw the bark of the tree that had been torn to splits. There was even more blood at the tree he had stopped, as if someone’s artery had been slashed.

This blood. It belongs to Marissa!

Cassius gnashed his teeth, fury becoming one with him as the thunder struck the ground behind him.

Just then, he heard the sound of a movement that startled him. He was ready to kill whoever that person was but came to a stop as he saw the gown that Marissa always worn in the color of scarlet and black. Her figure was covered in shadows, standing behind a tree. Although it was too dark, he couldn’t have mistaken his sister, he couldn’t have not known who it was standing there or whose blood it was that he could smell.

Cassius still offered her a smile of relief. Her dress was dirty and covered with blood but she was still standing, her body swayed but at least she wasn’t dead. Anything was better than dead. Anything.

So Cassius was at such a relief he thought he could finally pray to the Gods for the first time.

"You have fought well-" he said, his hands raised and his feet ready to welcome his sister and bring her back to castle where it’s safe.

But his hope was crushed when he saw Marissa that had walked in an odd manner, dragging one leg after another while her neck had snapped over to the side. Then a groan, a cry, something monstrous that didn’t sound like his sister then echoed from her mouth.

By the time Marissa had arrived in front of him and the moonlight shone over, Cassius found his sister- but not the way she used to be, rather into a monster with drools and green veins all over her pale face.
