Chapter 237: On The Shattered Glass-II

Princess Marissa felt a chill brushing the back of her neck, causing for her to turn her head behind her. Her raven short hair twirled when she turned to look at her back. For a moment, she stared at the castle’s glass door but found nothing except that it was as empty as an unfilled glass bottle.

"What are you looking at?" Hans asked and she turned to him, shaking her head. She couldn’t have him thinking that she regretted leaving the castle. Hans is too good of a man. He would be against the idea of leaving the castle and would instead disappear from her life rather than make her live a life of regret.

"It’s nothing," answered Marissa, "I thought I heard something but I’m not sure what it was," when she turned away from the glass door, Arabella appeared, trying to stop her only when someone had arrived, striking her down before pulling her body away from the scene.

Marissa couldn’t hear anything. Not only due to the distance but the earmuffs that Hans had settled on her head. He then brought over a cloak, placing it in front of her, "You would also need this to hide your features. It’s a shame, you’re so pretty but we have to hide you like this."

Crinkling her eyes, Marissa playfully hit his arms, "You have been odd since last night, do you know that? You keep whispering how pretty I am."

"Is that odd of me?" Hans asked, as if stunned.

Marissa shook her head, "You’re usually the type of man who would praise someone secretly, not so out of the open which startled me. But I understand, you must have done it to take away my worries from leaving the place."

"Yes," answered Hans. "Have you made up your mind, Marissa?"

Marissa nodded firmly, "I did. Well, I though I could see brother Cassius once more but... this is fine."

Hans smiled and then opened the door for her, reaching out his hands, "Ladies first."

"Oh you, really, you’re behaving quite odd today you know!" Marissa said as she jumped into the carriage. Hans entered after her, his eyes turned toward the door where he could see Iliza smiling as she stared down at the lifeless body of Arabella that was sprawled on the ground with blood over her head.

He turned his eyes away, as though he had seen nothing and closed the door of the carriage behind him, making his seat beside her.

"You closed all the curtains," Marissa noted as she looked around.

"It’s to prevent outsider from looking inside. The carriage candles have all been extinguished to make sure the outsider could see us as well," Hans noted as he reached out his hand and held her fingers.

Marissa smiled, "Thank you, you had thought a lot about this."

"I promised you," Hans answered and she stared at him, delighted to see the man she loves would sacrifice everything he has for her sake.

"But you didn’t tell me how your meeting with your brother yesterday night was. You said you two got drunk and went to the graveyard which caused all your clothes to be drenched with dirt," chuckled Marissa, "What else did you talk with him?"

"A lot," Hans answered, "We talked about our aspirations and our goals. We had a far different outlook of life, especially when it’s about vampires and humans. There was a little argument but he managed to understand that you are just like us, nothing different."

Marissa softly smiled, "I heard that your brother’s wife was pregnant too."

For a moment Hans’ expression tightened into bitterness. He managed to squeeze a smile, "She didn’t manage to give birth. A terrible accident happen, a freak accident. She lost her baby and now she’s bedridden. She can’t get up from the bed on her own which was why my brother had became even more sensitive."

"I understand that," Marissa sighed, "Shouldn’t I send a doctor for her?"

"That’s not necessary, she’s been seen by the doctor."

"Oh," Marissa could feel the sudden shut out from Hans which felt cold and odd. Normally, he wouldn’t simply say that it’s unnecessary, he would have had thoughtfully think about the offer first.

Marissa didn’t think much as she felt her forehead covered with sweat. Sighing, she raised her hand and wiped the sweat on her forehead, gently wiping it off.

She then mumbled, "I think it’s too hot for me to wear the cloak here. I’ll take it off for now."

"Sure," Hans then released her hands. He slipped his fingers into his pocket when he heard how Marissa had suddenly moved to open the curtain of the carriage which alerted him. He raised his hand, slamming it to the window, "NO!"

Marissa, shaken and shocked, stared wide at him, "A- Ah it’s dangerous if I just suddenly open it... I’m sorry."

"You should have known better Marissa, that would have been dangerous," snapped Hans which came off as sharp to Marissa.

She frowned, "I understand that it’s dangerous, but you didn’t have to react so strongly. You could have told me, couldn’t you? What’s wrong with you today? I know you are worried but you don’t have to be so stressed."

Hans ruffled his hair and then sighed, "Right. My apologies, I was just too tense."

Marissa stared at him, wordless. She then removed her cloak and felt how her hair was tugged in the ribbon of the cloak. Confused why she couldn’t remove her hair so easily, she pushed her hands into her pocket, rummaging for a round hand mirror into her palms and rose it over her face.

She then looked at her face, finding that the hair was caught in the button instead of her ribbon. With patience, she tried to smoothened her hair and untangle it when a sudden rock on the carriage caused for her mirror to slip from her hands into the ground.

Feeling annoyed, Marissa pouted. She still reached her hand to the mirror, slowly bringing it towards her and finding how it was cracked.

How terrible, she thought. This was Cassius’s birthday gift when she was still five.

It had always managed to avoid breakage for two decades yet now it was shattered, just like a bad omen.

As she stared at the broken shards, her crimson eyes widened.

She saw her own reflection, pristine as ever with no difference.

But one thing had changed.

It wasn’t her, it wasn’t the carriage.

Rather, it was Hans who sat beside him.

Instead of his usual face, she could see a face of another man, someone she never knew!
