Chapter 236: On The Shattered Glass-I

As the door behind her had been closed, going back wasn’t an option. Arabella became worried about the loudly ringing bell that seemed to be calling for help and in moment of desperation, she followed the sound of the bell through the dim and small path.

The bricks around her was humid, rather sticky when it touched her fingertips, she concluded that this place was left unused as there were so many spider webs around that hadn’t been touched for possibly longer than five years.

As she padded her feet carefully to avoid slipping, she could hear the murmur that gathered around the place, the sound was no longer just a ringing bell, rather it was a murmur of two people, possibly talking in secret which halted her entire body.

She didn’t find one of the voices familiar but she did found the other one very familiar.

Familiar, of course, that’s the voice which belongs to Hans Monet!

He seemed to be talking to someone who isn’t Princess Marissa but how odd... Arabella had left her room when the clock was just twenty minutes away from midnight. By now shouldn’t Hans be with Marissa, near the gate so they could escape in time?

And what are they talking about?

Arabella pressed her ears to the wall, hearing the direct conversation of the two people behind the wall. They both whispered, "...Mistress."

"I know," said Hans in return, "It is almost midnight now, I have to leave. This man promised to meet that vampiress during midnight to run away and if I appear late, that would cause suspicion."

The other person sighed, their voice was far too muddled for Arabella to guess who they are. It was as if his voice had been altered on purpose, causing for that odd muffle in the person’s voice.

"The potion is this green one," said the muddled voice and Hans took it to his hands, or so Arabella imagined.

Hans paused then spoke, "Just an injection to any part of her body and she would definitely turn into remnants, am I right?"

Arabella gasped and in timely manner, she cupped her mouth as her back hit the wall behind her. The words Hans said rang in her head as she realized that Hans was a part of the sorcerers, and he was going to inject Princess Marissa with a potion to turn her into a remnant!

"Don’t hesitate," the muddled voice said to Hans, "It is your first time and if you succeed His Majesty would be extremely pleased. You can even retain your current appearance if he’s happy."

Hans seemed firm in his choice as he muttered, "I know," then he added, "I will make sure that woman turn into remnant even if it is the last thing I have to do."

Arabella, alarmed, fully awake now.

She understood her priority- that she should find an exit and tell Marissa as well as Cassius about who Hans really was. Although she didn’t have any proof other than what she heard but for now, she needed to stop princess Marissa, to save her life from this impending danger!

She turned her head to where she came from but knowing that the door could only be open from outside, Bella guessed that the exit must be at the end of this path.

Without hesitation, Arabella run down the path, her feet slipped once but she managed to stop herself from falling by grabbing to the wall. She continued to run as quickly as possible, and only saw the bright light at the end of the tunnel after running down the path for six minutes.

Out of relief, Bella rushed closer and when she saw the light getting closer, she ducked her head out only to realize that she had arrived at Cassius’s garden.

It had turned out that this path connects to the garden, hidden behind the tree. When she turned her head around and studied the surrounding, she also saw a gate carved between the bark of a large tree. The gate was hidden very cleverly, a gate that one can only see if they had escaped from the secret passageway she had just walked out from.

Only then did Arabella understood this was the path to leave the Castle, perhaps a secret pathway that only the royals of this castle knew.

Was it something that the human King had made when they used to live here?

The gate itself was rusty and when Arabella came closer to it, she noticed it was locked with a large bronze padlock.

Arabella took her eyes off from the gate, knowing that this wasn’t the time for her to find a way to escape the castle, instead she needs to stop Princess Marissa from leaving with Hans!

With all her might, Arabella rushed toward the garden’s glass door to return inside the castle. A few guards stared at her, perhaps confused by how dirty she appeared as mud, dusts, and spiderwebs all covered her face.

Ignoring the stares, Arabella continued her path.

She was breathing heavily, trying to recall the path that would lead her to the back of the castle where Marissa had told her where she would be leaving from.

Her legs felt shaky by the time she arrived at the hallway which would lead her to the back of the castle. She noticed there were less maids and almost none at all, perhaps to ensure that Marissa would elope without a single soul knowing it but this made it harder for Arabella to ask for help, for someone to stop Marissa with her.

She could see the glass door to the back of the castle that was dark with not even a single lamp. Her smile of relief appeared as she could see Princess Marissa’s back, holding Hans. They stood outside the white carriage that was normally used for lower ranked nobles, still chatting before they enter the carriage.

This was the time! She was close!

Arabella’s breath hitched with hope. She lifted her hands and waved, trying to catch their attention. When they didn’t seem to notice, she called out desperation creeping into her voice. But before her words could carry far, she saw it. A shadow, reflected in the dark window ahead.

Time seemed to have stopped for a moment, the world was stunned in place as she focused on the person behind her, slightly taller, thinner, but an unmistakeable smile spread wide from one side of her cheeks to another, as though stretched by an object.

The shadow of Iliza stood behind her.

Before Arabella could make out what had happened or what Iliza had held on her hand was a large vase gifted by the neighboring kingdom, Iliza strike her hands down over her head and Bella felt the sharp dull pain over the crown of her head.

Then blood covered her sight as her body swayed hitting the ground.

"I.." Arabella’s green eyes were filled with anger as she glared at Iliza who stood in front of her, holding a smile.

Iliza then said, "We can’t have you ruin our plan." Before Arabella could try to understand what happened, she saw another pair of shoes... a familiar shoes that she had often seen worn by Cassius.

Her eyes dipped into darkness and seeing Arabella, Iliza let out a thoughtful hum.

She then muttered, "I think she’s dead. She’s not breathing anymore."
