Chapter 305 - Chapter 305 Chapter 113 Show Off Skills
Chapter 305: Chapter 113: Show Off Skills Chapter 305: Chapter 113: Show Off Skills Yueyao, when she was tidying up her things in the evening, looked at the four boxes of jewelry given to her by Old Madam Lian and lowered her head in contemplation. The precious stone Kingfisher Jade Hairpin was too bulky and conspicuous to consider taking. As for the jade ornaments, those might be feasible to bring with her; she truly didn’t feel at ease leaving them in the mansion. It wasn’t that Yueyao genuinely worried that the Lady family would send someone to steal them. Should such an incident occur, the Lady family would truly lose face.
This was indeed a trait of Yueyao the scholar. Even if she were to be reborn once more, deep in her heart she still considered gold, silver, and jewels to be too vulgar, while jade represented nobility and purity. This led Yueyao to feel that if the Kingfisher Jade Hairpin were lost, then so be it, but she couldn’t bear to part with those rare jade pieces. However, Yueyao was now pragmatic and wouldn’t discard them out of distaste as she once may have done.
Yueyao searched her room for a while before she found a cloisonne-embellished square box with a gem-like floral design, and she placed the jade ornaments into it.
After sending Hua Lei out, Yueyao took out a box her father had given her and carelessly grabbed a stack of silver notes from it. She couldn’t keep everything in one spot; if something happened, she could lose all at once. Following the saying “A crafty rabbit has three burrows,” she too must learn from the crafty rabbit.
After Yueyao finished these preparations, she suddenly started laughing. As she laughed, tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. What was she doing? She really didn’t know what she was doing. How had she come to this point? When would such days come to an end?
Hua Lei, having not seen Yueyao come out for a long while, called from outside: “Miss, miss.”
Yueyao came back to her senses from her sadness, wiped away her tears, and after getting everything tidied up, restored it all to how it should be and let Hua Lei and Qiao Lan come in.
Seeing that everything was nearly in order, Yueyao then proceeded to the main house, as she definitely needed to inform the Lady family of her intention to visit Ma’s Mansion.
After the Old Madam passed away, the Lady family reigned supreme in the inner courtyard, and following the Lady family’s new rules, daily attendance at morning and evening hadn’t been skipped, so the house was full of people when Yueyao arrived.
The Lady family looked at Yueyao, dressed in her Crescent White attire, with a smile on their face but scoffing inwardly. To arrive as a guest in mourning dress–how offensive it must be to those with joyful news.
Truth be told, the Lady family really felt aggrieved. There was no hitting or scolding Yueyao. Despite Yueyao always talking back to her, she still had to treat Yueyao with respect.
After speaking to the Lady family, Yueyao went straight to the front yard to find Tingzheng. Everyone envied and was jealous of Yueyao; wasn’t she just too arrogant?
Yueyao originally intended to visit the Li family and then her uncle’s house, but after thinking it over, she decided against it. Her eldest uncle disliked the Li family, and she had already fallen out with the Lady family. It was better not to provoke her eldest uncle further.
Yueyao didn’t take Nanny Hao with her when she left; instead, she was accompanied by Hua Lei and maid Qiao Lan. Riding in the carriage, Qiao Lan whispered to her young lady, “Miss, I think those eyes of the coachman are particularly frightening.” Those eyes were truly unnerving.
Yueyao chuckled and said, “Afraid of what? What could he possibly dare to do to me?” Midway through the ride, Yueyao asked Qiao Lan to take out the gift box, and in front of Hua Lei and Qiao Lan, she took out a small box from inside it, secured with a gleaming brass lock.
Qiao Lan kept quiet, for although she was a maid, having served by the Old Madam for so many years, she had a fairly good idea of how many possessions the Old Madam had. She could guess the items in this box must be jewelry that the Old Madam had given to her mistress, jewelry that was exquisite enough for the mistress to keep elsewhere.
Qiao Lan knew that the mistress was performing these actions in front of her partly as a test. However, Qiao Lan had no second thoughts and didn’t fear Yueyao’s examination.
Hua Lei spoke softly, “Miss, do you plan to entrust these items to Uncle Master for safekeeping?”
Yueyao didn’t answer Hua Lei. Whether she temporarily handed over the items to her uncle or entrusted them to her cousin, she planned to eventually lock them away in the safety deposit vault of the Money Shop. People grow old and die, Huitong Money House might not be around forever, but it had still been in fine standing up until her death in her previous life.
Observing Yueyao dressed in white, Qiao Lan said, “Miss, these clothes…”
Hua Lei cheerfully took out another padded jacket from the carriage, a water-blue one, and after Yueyao put it on and replaced the jewelry she was wearing, she seemed to have transformed completely.
Zhuang Ruolan greeted Yueyao in the courtyard with a smile.
Seeing Ruo Lan’s slightly protruding belly, Yueyao said with a bit of embarrassment, “Cousin-in-law, you should have stayed indoors; there was no need for you to come out.”
Ruo Lan laughed heartily and replied, “It’s alright. I’m over four months in, and the doctor and Madam both say that it is good for a pregnant person to walk around more rather than always sitting indoors, as that’s not good for the body.”
