Chapter 55: The Hand Of The Other Lord
Back to the other side, while the investigation squad are waiting for the poison to subside in the tunnel, two living creatures who appear to be unbothered by the toxicity in the air are digging the skulls of the perished root crawlers.
The line of killed root crawlers was so extensive that it looks like a god has stretched his arms to passed his final judgement to these creatures. Aside of the toxic air, the stench of corroded flesh are also present. Making it difficult for most living beings to breathe down here.
"S-sir First, d-did they kill a lot of failed test subjects this t-time?" a voice of a timid girl echoed in the stillness of the underground. But there was no girl in sight. Instead, the voice came from a flying owl. It has a disheveled and dull black-white plumage. A ghost-like face with a pair of scars in both of its dark beady eyes.
Its entire body is surrounded by mana. Protecting it from the potent poison.
The owl looks like a neglected pet that will cause nightmares to children. That would be Luis’ words if he were to see it.
It was flying beside a tall human-like being with a familiar pair of pointy ears. His features are not that excellent, it was rather plain that it almost resembles a human.
First, who assumes the image of a moon elf clicked his tongue impatiently, "Don’t disturb me while I am doing my job, Eighth." His brown eyes which had a peculiar hint of yellow flashed a disguised annoyance. First’s pale skin was littered with blisters due to the lingering poison in the air.
But he doesn’t mind the pain as a yellow substance is secreting from his skin, quickly healing it.
First fished the stone from the crushed skull of the root crawlers.
Its color is almost identical to his iris.
"I-I didn’t expect that the newly born moon elf lord would use poison to deal with our scraps. D-do you think that the moon elf lord deliberately chose this part of the tunnel to kill the trash subjects that contain the transmitter stones because he knows that we are controlling these creatures through the stone?"
"Don’t say an impossible thing. The moon elf lord doesn’t even know that we are here." First averted his eyes from the owl and tried his best to calm himself.
"C-can you bring some of that poison? I-I want to study it." Eighth said with her usual stutter.
"A-a poison that can corrode the skin while directly killing the brain of the victim. I-It’s no surprise that those failed subjects that we are saving for the t-testing day have gone momentarily out of control." The owl carried on in her rumblings while First was seemingly uninterested.
"W-who would expect that this trash is afraid of death too?" Eighth continued in her innocent voice.
First didn’t butt in and he moved to collect all the stones.
"I-I even have to u-use a lot of mana to restrain some of them and t-transform them into their m-miniature size to escape!" Eight’s stuttering worsened as she showed signs of agitation.
"A-and I was saving f-for the t-testing day! I-I was working too hard for t-the sake of L-lord Isami’s entertainment. S-so you must at least p-provide that poisonous plant for me, Sir First!" The voice is almost yelling but the owl does not show any changes in its expression.
First didn’t answer and resumed doing his work.
"Sir F-First, I-I asked you in a kind tone. D-don’t I deserve your answer?" The stuttering girl’s voice gave off a dangerous vibe.
First’s back stiffened and the unhealed scar on his chest burned once again. It’s been hurting these days for a reason that is unknown to him.
"Hey, do you know that you are less annoying when you’re just hooting?" First didn’t give in to the other’s malicious intent.
He gritted his teeth and expressed how pissed he was.
"Stop treating me like a subordinate. I am the first creation of Lord Isami. You are just a junior."
"B-but you are the weakest. N-not having a physical body and c-can only persist living off of that sickly body of a y-young moon elf for more than 100 years."The girl’s tone didn’t change but the taunting and the sharp sarcasm is evident in her words.
"S-shouldn’t you respect me? Being I am the Eight and the best creation so far by our lord?"
First made an earth arrow from the tunnel’s wall and shot it directly at the ghost-faced owl.
"Stop pestering me if you demand respect from me, Eight." The male moon elf was filled with killing intent. "Believe me I can kill your familiar before you can say the first letter of your last word. I don’t mind giving you an internal injury if you are really asking for it."
First store all the shining brown stone to his magical storage ring and turned his back to his partner.
"Hehe- hahaha," A maniacal laugh voice came out of the dazed owl. "Y-you can never do that. L-lord Isami will use this thing to observe the t-testing day. H-he is kind of interested in the newborn moon elf lord. O-our Lord Isami is looking forward t-to killing him and all of the m-moon elves, you see?"
First didn’t expect himself to flinch after hearing the last statement.
Eight noticed it and she laughed on the other end.
"W-what’s with that reaction?! W-were you trying to entertain this little E-eighth?" Then the girl’s tone turned malicious. "O-or maybe, you formed a bond with y-your fake little family?" Eight’s cackle echoed in the tunnel. "Y-you must have liked your false name, Nereen!"
"D-don’t worry all of you will meet again someday. A-and you will kill each other once that happens." She said carefully as if savoring her words one by one.
Who would have thought that the first creation of their lord will have that feeling towards others that are not their master?
"That will be entertaining." Eight said that without a stutter.
First doesn’t need to see the damned girl’s face to know that she must be grinning from ear to ear.
"Shut up." This time, First sent a wind arrow but this time it just narrowly missed the owl.
"A-alright, Sir First. M-make sure to collect all the t-transmitter s-stones. T-those are prototypes that have multiple uses. Lord I-Isami might have a use f-for that." Then it flew away.
"I know that. I’ll be taking it with me once I come back to my rightful place." First murmured. "But before that, I need to make sure that the transportation circle is in place."
Once he is done with collecting the transmitter stones. First made his way deeper into the tunnel. Then he touched a specific part of the wall. The soil caved in revealing a passageway where an incomplete magic circle is being constructed.
"Nothing matters to me except for the lord who created me, Lord Isami," First uttered while stroking the scar in the center of his chest.
