Chapter 200: Gossips (2)

Luis silently raised his brow upon hearing the comment about Nicol’s family affair. Actually, when Nicol said that he wanted to renunciate his clan or family, Luis had to blink twice with a gap in his mouth to process what he heard. The argument between Nicol and his father, Nihil, is a piece of old news to him since it’s been brought to his attention as early as his first meeting with the patriarch. There were even times when he heard ’concerned’ people talking about how Nicol suffered an injury when he tried to convince the patriarch to agree to unite with the other clans.

He thought it was nothing but a case of terror parent, but seeing how a physically weak Nicol didn’t let an opportunity pass and cut his ties with his clan, Luis sensed that something serious must be happening underneath the situation.

"Patriarch Nihil is not a great person either. He obviously thinks that he and his clan stand at the top of the moon elf race, and he doesn’t even bother to keep his ego under wraps. Did you see how he looked at the Lune Clan? Even though most of the members of that new clan are good-natured, he would never want to speak at them kindly," someone in the huddling group defended Nicol.

"The patriarch’s personality is out of the question. Head Priest Nicol should consider the efforts and resources the clan gave him to become strong. If it weren’t for the Clan, he wouldn’t become a priest, let alone the head priest."

"Oh, how come I heard before that our head priest actually ran away to be a priest without his father knowing? Patriarch Nihil was only unable to drag him back because it stipulated in the century-old agreement between the temple and the clans that the Clans shouldn’t meddle with the temple."

"Still, it’s a matter of being grateful, and I think Head Priest Nicol should do better."

"Shall we stop them from talking about that?" Xagriien asked upon seeing that his bearer’s brows were knotted.

"How are you going to that? We are on stealth today. Didn’t you remember that if anyone among us were discovered, a punishment would be waiting?"

"No, Xagrien, it’s alright. It is something that I expected anyway," Nicol chimed in. Not a tremble or weakness was heard in his statement. He was unbothered.

Luis nodded, "It is inevitable for anyone standing in front of the people and leading not to hear criticisms from the others. Their eyes will always rivet to Nicol since he is the present leader of the Moon Goddesses’ priests."

"But-" Legland sticks his head out of the foliage. He looked like he was about to say something, so Luis gave him questioning eyes.

"I forgot about it," Legland awkwardly scratched his head. Worry is hidden in his crimson eyes.

’But that doesn’t seem to be the case,’ Luis thought.

"Oh, okay. If you remember it, then don’t hesitate to say it to me."

"Thank you, My Lord," says Legland, but since then, he didn’t utter a word at all.

"By the way, Nicol. Did you speak with your father after that?" Luis asked his subordinate, who was hiding not that far from him. The atmosphere became heated due to the drama that night.

He couldn’t help but remember the events that transpired because everything was simply too spicy, in Luis’ opinion.

Following Nicol’s bold words was the vehement objection from Nihil. Luis could still remember how the man’s face became the color of a pig’s liver.

"No! This useless son!" Nihil roared, his face contorted with suppressed rage. He forgot that the Moon Elf Lord was present and beside his Nicol. "How dare you treat our prestigious clan as if it is trash that you can just throw around?!"

Nihil was so livid at that time that he was stomping his feet as he approached Nicol and tried to hold him by his priest’s robe collar. However, Xagrien was quick to protect the then-paralyzed Nicol by standing in the way of the

charging man.

"Do not meddle in the affairs of my clan!" The older man screamed in the face of the tall Xagrien. The anger of the Ris Clans patriarch was so apparent that it could be seen in how his hands were trembling.

Seeing that the situation was at the boiling point, Luis took the initiative to diffuse the tension.

"Patriarch Nihil, please calm down. You have no foe here."

The soothing voice of the Moon Elf Lord became a calming salve that made Nihil regain his composure.

"I apologize, My Lord. For showing you such an unsightly image of mine. I just lost myself from my wild emotions because of my prodigal son."

"I can understand, Patriarch."

Luis calmly made his way to face Nihil directly. "But you should remember what I always told you and the other members of the Tribunal: never lose your cool as a leader."

"Besides, the one you are talking with is the Head Priest of the Moon Goddess’ Temple, not just anyone." Luis’ eyes slightly became brighter as he added, "Oh, and even if it is the common folks working under you, it is not ideal for a leader to just hit them like that."

"I-I will be mindful this time," Nihil reflexively trembled, seeing the saintly smile in the Moon Elf Lord. Not an ounce of anger or disappointment was shown in the arch of the lord’s lips, but that is what made him incredibly uncomfortable.

"It’s great that we are clear on that," Luis then cast a fleeting glance at Nicol, who remained firm. "Regarding Head Priest Nicol’s request to be ’independent’ from the Ris Clan. We can thoroughly discuss that in the Tribunal. That is if the two of you failed to settle on your own."

"I respect the autonomy of the Clans. That is why I am giving you that opportunity. However, if the two of you are far from reaching an agreement, then I would have to step forward as the Moon Elf Lord to understand the problem and help you resolve it, right?"

Nihil turned mute after hearing the considerate words of the Moon Elf Lord. He knew what was implied when the lord said to ’thoroughly discuss,’ which means that the Moon Elf Lord would investigate further into the matter. And in turn, his Clan’s secrets will come to light also.

’I cannot let that happen!’ Nihil could only bite his tongue and politely nod at the Moon Elf Lord.

Nihil turned to his son, who remained his stoic face at him, and said with gritted teeth, "What can I give you to make you stay?"

Never in his wildest dreams did it cross to him that he would be begging this disappointment of a son to stay in the clan. It hurts his ego and face as the patriarch of their Ris Clan.

"He failed to hide that he hated it," murmured Xagrien inaudibly. However, it was clearly caught by Luis’ powerful hearing.

"You can give me my freedom. Patriarch Nihil." Nicol adamantly replied.
