Chapter 663: Side Story 2. Dance of Flame and Shadow - 22

Agni woke up with a start, feeling his heart beating fast for a few seconds before finally blinking. When his eyes registered the brown hair strewn across his stretched-out arm, he let out a relieved sigh.

The brown hair wasn’t as long and messy as in his dream, getting matured with the owner’s age. But it was still fluffy and felt nice every time Agni buried his face there. Sadly, he couldn’t call the younger man ’squirrel’ anymore--a banned word aside from ’kid’.

Oh, well--a smile price for getting him back. Agni smiled in satisfaction and pulled the sleeping man closer to him, ruffling the short brown hair. A lot of time had passed, and that young, delicate face had turned sharper, rougher, with several scars that would be visible under the sun. Those once sparkling eyes had turned deeper and number, and yet...they still warmed him like nothing could.

"Hmm..." Agni smiled wider and leaned down to kiss the scout’s eyelids.

It had been fourteen years, so he had forgotten how awful it was in the past. Looking at the persistent younger man who dragged him all the way into marriage, Agni couldn’t be more thankful. From the eyelids, his kiss traveled down to the firm cheek and thinly stubbled jaw.

"I told you I’m not doing it again," a hoarse voice scolded him, lower than what it used to be in the past.

Agni felt a bit guilty about influencing this kid to be a smoker. Nolan must be rolling in his grave. Heh--whatever; would it be worse than knowing his son becoming his rowdiest subordinate’s husband? He might have failed to protect this kid from making a foolish decision, but...he should be able to fulfill it now for the rest of his life.

He leaned down and kissed the protesting lips softly, prompting the sleepy brown eyes to open in confusion. For someone he thought would be pouncing on him, the berserker was kissing him softly, full of affection instead of lust.

How weird.

"...what’s wrong?" Ron grasped the berserker’s face and stared into the fuzzy dark eyes. They were slightly reddened as if the older man was just crying. "Did you have a nightmare?"

"Yeah..."

The answer surprised Ron. When was the last time he heard Agni had a nightmare? Ah...it was when Ron came back from the first leg of Operation Kronos, where he heard that Ron almost died from the fragment’s surprise beam.

But then, there was no reason to have any nightmares after they were away from the most dangerous thing.

"What is it? About my father?" Ron asked curiously.

"About us in the past."

The brown eyes narrowed. "Which one?"

"There could only be one, couldn’t there?" Agni smiled sheepishly.

Ron hummed and pushed the berserker off him so he could reach for the glass of water on the nightstand. The only bad thing that happened during their relationship was the time Agni kicked Ron out of the Borderland after spending one glorious night together. It set them apart for years--six years, to be exact. Ron still used it to instill guilt in the older man sometimes so he could get what he wanted.

But it was the first time he knew it was bad enough to be called a nightmare, and Ron...rather liked it. A lot, actually.

"I’m sorry," the berserker leaned his head on Ron’s shoulder, hugging the younger man from behind. He sounded so pitiful that Ron couldn’t hold his chuckle.

"Pfft--it’s been years and we got married," he put the glass down and leaned against the broad shoulder, glancing at the wistful dark eyes. It was kind of cute, seeing an old man being gloomy about the past break-up. "You bring it up now?"

"Because I dreamt about it," Agni shrugged, kissing the mark he made yesterday on the scout’s shoulder, before sighing into the darkened spot. "I was so stupid."

"Yeah, you were; it was an asshole move, you jerk!" Ron flicked the berserker’s forehead. "But..."

Agni tilted his head, waiting cautiously. For insurance, he tightened his grip on his husband’s waist. The benefit of not having a marriage certificate was that they had nothing to be torn, but also nothing to be used as their legal bond.

Which was both horrifying and thrilling. Just like their life.

"After I got older, I kind of got your point," Ron crossed his arms and looked up at the hotel’s ceiling. "Every time I see someone much younger, I think of protecting them, thinking that they deserve better."

While he admitted he was sending Zein out so the guide could help liberate the Deathzone, it was also something driven by compassion. Both of them didn’t want to see someone young and brilliant, who seemed like he never tasted the good in life, to be spending his time rotting in the Borderland.

Ron was also a rare case of voluntary enrollment, but in his case, he had a stubborn old man he was trying to bag--unlike Zein.

"Hmm," Agni hummed lightly as his smile spread on the scout’s skin.

"But that’s never why I got angry at you in the first place," Ron added.

"Huh? What, then?"

Ron snapped and stood up abruptly, getting away from his clueless husband’s embrace. He glared at the berserker in annoyance. "It’s because you said all that bullshit about me seeing you as my father’s replacement, you dimwit!" he hissed, throwing a pillow to the surprised berserker’s face. "How dare you treat me like a clueless kid with a daddy issue?!"

Agni was so stunned that he didn’t even react when the pillow hit him in the face. As it slid down to his lap, he blinked slowly, staring at the fuming scout who unexpectedly still holding a grudge about that.

Ah--so that was why ’kid’ was banned.

"Pfft--" Agni bit his lips to stifle the laugh coming out of his mouth, and not unreasonably, his squirrel was getting annoyed again.

"You’re laughing now? Huh? Huuuh?" the scout took the pillow on Agni’s lap and hit the older man again while hissing.

What did Agni do? He laughed louder. It wasn’t something he imagined two adult males--one of them already hitting middle age--would do in the dead of the night. But it reminded him about the adorable, feisty squirrel that managed to light up the dying spark in his heart almost fifteen years ago, and all he could feel was happiness.

Still laughing, he caught his angry squirrel and trapped the man in a hug, raining kisses until the annoyed face melted away. "You’re still you, after all," he whispered against the lips he kissed last.

Ron went silent for a while, staring at the berserker dubiously. He pulled his head back and squinted. "Are you trying to seduce me now?"

"I’m being sincere for once, and you thought I was flirting," Agni rolled his eyes. "Besides," the berserker smirked and flipped their position, bringing his husband back to the bed. "You were flirting with me first."

"Well...I mean..." Ron pursed his lips, recalling those moments when his feelings grew more and more with each interaction.

It was rather embarrassing, however, if he admitted that he found comfort in the berserker’s attempt to protect him--something he couldn’t experience after he lost his parents. He’d be damned if he heard anything about a ’daddy issue’ again.

So he went to the next best reason. "You were hot."

"Really?" Agni tilted his head, rubbing the scout’s reddened ear. "You always told me to stop looking like a homeless old man."

Ron rolled his eyes. "I didn’t say it was your face."

"Heh," the berserker smirked, slotting himself between the scout’s legs and leaning down for a kiss. "At least I have something."

A lot of things had changed, but not with his dick, fortunately. It was hard keeping his figure the same as fifteen years ago when he was at his peak, but for someone who was about to hit fifty, no one would deny that the berserker would lose against a much younger esper.

And for some reason, he was even more energetic in his old age--which troubled Ron a bit, as someone who aged normally like any guy. Esther--bless her heart--told him that a flameheart berserker who found his spark would get stronger, but Ron had no idea how to think about himself as the one who made the older man able to fuck him from dusk to dawn.

And it seemed like the old man would do exactly that if Ron didn’t stop these kisses, which had moved to his neck. "Hey, I told you I can’t," Ron sighed and grabbed the hair that had turned completely red from that spark he caused. Those warm lips did feel good, but they had something to do in a few hours. "We have to go to Zein’s in the morning."

"Just once," the berserker murmured against the flushed neck. And what kind of human could leave their partner’s flushed skin alone?

Ron arched his back unconsciously, even while grumbling. "You always said that and--mhh, yeah...oh, do that again--ahh..."

Agni chuckled at the way the grumble turned into moans and worked his mouth over the scout’s chest--where the flush had spread enticingly. Twisting and sighing in defeat, Ron held onto the berserker’s back and let himself be consumed. Whatever annoyance he had earlier had melted away with the kiss.

But then again, that had always been the case from the start. Even after he was kicked out of the place he thought he could call home fourteen years ago.
