Chapter 36: Find me, Qi Jianyi?
"Find me, Qi Jianyi?"
Qi Jianyi’s eyes flared with a mix of rage and disbelief. The revelation struck her like a lightning bolt—her transmigration had been orchestrated. Her life, the one she had painstakingly built, had been stolen from her.
For once, Qi Jianyi lost control of her emotions. With a fierce cry, she shoved all the books off the table in a fit of anger.
"Argh!" she yelled, the sound echoing through the room.
Desperately biting her lip to hold back her fury, Qi Jianyi’s tears spilled freely. The weight of the grievance she had been carrying since her transmigration finally burst forth, overwhelming her.
She had been forced into an exchange of lives with the original Qi Jianyi, with no regard for her own wishes. Everything she had worked so hard for had been taken away from her.
"Qi Jianyi! It was your life that was so miserable. Who gave you the right to steal mine?" she screamed, her voice breaking and hoarse.
She sobbed uncontrollably, her tears blurring her vision as she glared at the brown book on the floor. It wasn’t just a diary—it was a confession meant for her.
A sudden knock on the door jolted Qi Jianyi from her rage. The door creaked open slowly, revealing the anxious face of a maid.
"Miss Qi, are you okay?" the maid asked softly, her voice laced with concern. "I heard a loud bang from your room. Are you injured?"
The unexpected intrusion seemed to sever the last thread of Qi Jianyi’s control. With her anger boiling over, she shrieked, "Get out!"
The maid flinched at the harsh command, her eyes wide with worry. She hesitated for a moment, then quickly retreated from the room, her footsteps echoing as she hurried to the masters’ bedroom.
On the other hand, Qi Jianyi stood rigid beside the study table, her emotions raw and uncontained. As she came to grips with her outburst, she realised the maid had already fled.
Slowly, Qi Jianyi bent down to retrieve the brown book she had cast aside in her fury. Despite her hatred for it, this book was her only connection to understanding this world and her place in it.
She despised the original Qi Jianyi, and countless questions swirled in her mind.
Why are you so selfish?
How could you steal my life simply because yours was unhappy?
Don’t you love your family at all?
How did you orchestrate this exchange of our lives?
Qi Jianyi longed for answers but had no idea where to find them. It seemed the original Qi Jianyi was living her life in the real world, mingling with her family. The thought of the original Qi Jianyi being embraced by her real family made Qi Jianyi uncomfortable.
"Jianyi, what’s wrong with you? Why are the books on the floor? Are you injured?"
The sudden question made Qi Jianyi turn. She saw Mr. Qi and Mrs. Qi standing in the doorway, concern etched on their faces. Her eyes, still reddened from crying, grew cold as she confronted their worried gazes.
Two conflicting thoughts waged war in her mind.
One, she felt that everything that had happened to her was their fault. They had mistreated their daughter, leading her to steal Qi Jianyi’s life.
Two, a voice within her argued that it wasn’t their fault. The original Qi Jianyi had been selfish, rejecting their love even when they tried to make amends. She had turned her back on her own parents’ apology and, instead of facing her own life honestly, chose to take someone else’s simply because it seemed better.
With a mocking smile, Qi Jianyi responded sarcastically, "Nothing. I just realised how life is so unfair."
She had worked tirelessly to achieve her goals, voicing her feelings and fighting for her happiness. Yet, here was the original Qi Jianyi, who had merely complained and avoided facing her own struggles, claiming that Qi Jianyi had taken everything for granted.
Meanwhile, the original Qi Jianyi, unable to muster the courage to confront her own reality, had chosen to take a life that was not hers to claim.
Mr. Qi frowned at the sudden shift in his daughter’s demeanour. Just moments ago, she had been laughing with them, and now she regarded them with an unsettling detachment.
"Who hurt you?" he demanded sternly, his voice laced with concern.
In her mind, Qi Jianyi’s silent answer was clear. ’Your daughter. She’s the one who hurts me.’ But it was a truth she could never voice.
"No one. I was just annoyed," Qi Jianyi replied dismissively, ignoring the mess she had caused. She moved toward her bed, her exhaustion apparent. "Can you please leave? I’m tired and want to sleep."
"Qi Jianyi!" Mr. Qi raised his voice, frustration evident in his tone. He was clearly unhappy with her attitude.
Mrs. Qi, however, placed a calming hand on her husband’s arm, signalling him to hold back. She shook her head, her silent plea for him to avoid making things worse.
Qi Jianyi watched the interaction with a heart of ice, as if she were a mere observer rather than the person Mr. Qi had just yelled at.
"Then you rest first. Tomorrow, we’ll have the maid clean up your room," Mrs. Qi said gently, guiding her husband out of the room.
As they turned to leave, Qi Jianyi couldn’t help but add, "I have a group assignment this weekend, so I won’t be able to accompany you to the auction later."
The revelation of the truth had made it unbearable for Qi Jianyi to remain in the same room with her parents. She needed distance to calm herself.
Mrs. Qi was taken aback but said nothing. She simply nodded, closed the door behind her, and returned to the room with her husband.
"What’s wrong with Jianyi?" Mr. Qi asked, puzzled by the sudden change in their daughter.
Mrs. Qi ignored her husband’s confusion and lay down on the bed.
"And what is wrong with you?" Mr. Qi persisted, his confusion growing with his wife’s nonchalant attitude.
"Why do you have so many questions? Just shut up and go to sleep!" Mrs. Qi snapped, her frustration bubbling over.
"No, I want to understand what’s wrong with our daughter. She was laughing with us just a moment ago."
"Did you do something to upset her?" Mrs. Qi asked sharply, her gaze narrowing as she scrutinized Mr. Qi’s reaction.
Mr. Qi frowned, defensive. "What could I have done? I did nothing!" he protested, his innocence evident.
"Really?"
"Maybe...?" Mr. Qi replied hesitantly. The more Mrs. Qi questioned him, the more uncertain he became. Though he was convinced he had done nothing to upset his daughter, a nagging doubt lingered in his mind.
"You must have made her upset!" Mrs. Qi declared, pinching her husband’s waist in irritation.
Little did Qi Jianyi know, rather than blaming her for her rude remarks, her parents turned inward, convinced they had done something to upset her instead.
