Chapter 337: Promise kept

Gyles

I feel him shuffle against me on the bed.

He is waking up.

I sit up on the bed as he moves slowly. My eyes stay fixed on his beautiful face. His cheeks are flushed red. There are dark circles under his eyes, even though he just woke up. I get that this has been trying times for all of us. It just seems like we jump into a new problem after getting off one. I just want things to calm down and it seems like they are finally getting tit gat place.

His eyes open slowly and he furrows them, probably trying to register where he is. The last time he was conscious, we were outside searching for Levine. He was the most worried out of the three of us.

"Hey,’’ I reach for him gently. His eyes shift to me and I see the ease in his expression as he registers who I am. The confused look on his face wipes out.

"Where’s Blue?’’ he asks.

I smile, I don’t want him to worry about anything. I want him to just not think and relax. I want him to recuperate. I want him to forget everything that happened these past days. I want the old Rex back. Our time in the community, when we were just getting to know each other. He hasn’t smiled in a while. I know he hasn’t really thought deeply about all the things that have happened. All the things he was forced to do.

"He had something to do, he will be back soon," I try to brush it off as he sits up on the bed and rests his back on the headboard. His eyes roam around the room and even though I didn’t want him to worry about anything. He ends up worrying.

"What about Levine, I don’t feel her anymore,’’ he clutches his chest. I don’t know why he is so bothered. Levine is no longer in his head, which means he is finally free. I just have to make sure it stays that way. I can’t have anything happening to him anymore.

"It’s pretty late, do you want to maybe go back to sleep. You have had been through a lot,’’ I try to rational him into not panicking.

"What happened to her?’’ he shakes his head.

I know there is no convincing him, I might try but he looks like he is not going to listen to me right now. Maybe it is not the end of the world if he is stubborn. I mean, Rex has always been the kind of person to obey and not do what he really wants. I want him to have his own opinions.

"She is dead,’’ I breathe out because there is no point hiding this from him anymore. Blue promised me that he will come back. Once he does, we can all leave this place. He doesn’t have any ties here anymore. His mother is dead, his aunt is too now. There is no family for him here. The only family he has is his father and us.

He opens his eyes wide, the shock evident. I don’t know how this will affect him but I really need it not to. I need him to forget about this and not dwell on it. He has been through too much already. He needs to let go of this too.

"What?’’ he mutters in confusion and maybe a little bit of disbelief. This is someone that he had a connection with—granted, it was forced and she basically manipulated him but at the end of it all, he felt things that she felt.

"I am sorry, she didn’t make it.’’

It is not verified because we haven’t found her body and that is what Blue and Major went to look for, but I already feel it. The fact that he is free right now is all that matters and that means she has to be dead. That is the only explanation.

"She can’t be dead, she has so much to say to Blue. She can’t just leave him like that,’’ he trembles on the bed. Makes me think that he is actually not completely disconnected from her as we thought. At this point, I see the tears in his eyes, the pain for someone that he doesn’t even know. I don’t understand how he is feeling right now, I am not in his shoes but I want to help him. I want to take all the hurt from him but don’t know how to. I don’t know what to do to ease it all from him.

"Babe, calm down, you can pass whatever it is for her." I reach for him. If the only thing I could do is wipe the tears from his eyes, then I will. I brush my fingers against his face as I slowly wipe the tears off. He looks up at me as I try to pull him closer "This is not your fault." I manage. I need him to stop overthinking this and worrying. I need him to calm down.

"She is not a monster, she didn’t have a choice,’’ he cries in my arms and I take him in. I hold him until he stops sniffing. I hold him in my arms until he falls back asleep. This is exactly what I wanted. A moment of peace with him.

After a couple of seconds, I close my eyes and join him. I don’t know how long I am out but the second I hear the creak of the door, I open my eyes immediately. Blue raises his index finger up to his lips to make sure I don’t wake Rex up. I nod immediately and sit up on the bed, letting go of my mate in the process. A smile sprawls up to my face as he walks closer to the bed and reaches for me. He looks intact, he came back just as he promised and that is all that matters.

"You’re here,’’ I whisper as he takes me into his arms.

He came back.
