Chapter 257: Surviving death

"There is a plan. A group of witches are coming together. No one knows who they are, we just know what they are after and that is the throne."

"How do you have this information?’’

"People talk and the fact that your mother ended up the way she did just proves that they exist. I am not telling you all this to get favors from you or to make up for the past. I like Analise, she is a good leader. Kind. You need to stop them before it is too late."

I haven’t been able to focus all day. After Evanora left, I have been thinking about a way to tell mother all this. she is acting as if nothing happened. Like she wasn’t just poisoned. I don’t know how to get through to her. make her see that she is in danger.

"The prodigal son returns,’’ I turn to the door and Badger walks into the living room. Dressed in a black suit and dress shoes. There is a smile on his face and I am sure it is because of me. Badger is my mother’s longest friend. I have known him all my life and he has always been a sort of father figure to me. when I left, he wasn’t too happy but he said he understood and he didn’t pester me to come but the minute I came back, I knew he was going to be happy to see me.

"Hey Badger,’’ I welcome him with a quick hug. After the separation, he looks at me and raises a brow.

"Why do you look so happy, your mother almost died,’’ There is a smile on his face, so I know he is not too serious right now.

"Where were you when she almost died?’’

He laughs because we are doing this thing where we pick on each other o=until one person caves in. I actually want to know where he was because there is one person in this house that is guilty. Someone close to her and it could be anyone. If I could use my magic to reveal it, I would have but the person that did this also used magic to protect them. I am not getting anything from this house. There is no aura, no lingering moments. Everything is blank, which will make this harder for me.

"I could say the same for you. unlike you I was investigating some things,’’ his voice goes lower at the last part of his sentence. I watch him because suddenly there is a curiosity in this conversation.

"Investigating what?’’ I ask him.

He smiles and then pats my shoulder gently "Adult business son, it is good to have you back.’’ he tells me before walking away from me and into the house.

As usual, he still sees me as a child. When the person they should see as the child is the woman that is choosing to have another party even after just being poisoned. I don’t understand her and I have been trying to convince her all day that this is a bad idea but she doesn’t want to listen to me. she is refusing to even grasp the situation at hand. The fact that there are people out there that want her killed.

People that we don’t know.

If you don’t know who is the threat is, you can’t get rid of them. Right now it could be Badger for all I know and I am this kind of person that doesn’t trust easily. I don’t even trust my own father and I have been with him for two years now. the only person I trust right now is Rex, Gyles hasn’t gotten to that point yet because he is sneaky. There are things about him that I don’t know, things that he has done that make me wary of him. I know eventually, he will prove himself to me. I am already kind of seeing things about him that I like, things about him that I want to get to know.

It’s weird that you can love someone without really knowing them. Yeah, I saw things in his memories that make me understand why he is the way he is but I want him to let go of the past and he will never be better until he does.

I walk all the way to her room and she is in front of the mirror, putting on makeup. She has a robe on, she is getting ready for yet another party.

"This is a stupid idea mother,’’ I tell her as she glances at me through her lipstick.

She smiles "What is life without a little fun?’’

I roll my eyes. All my life, I have lived in a house that was open to the outside world. there was no weekend where she didn’t have a party or some sort of get-together. the fact that I was very anti-social—not because I wanted to but because I literally had no friends, made it all frustrating.

"You almost died. Shouldn’t you be looking for the person that tried to kill you?’’ I am in front of her door, my hand resting on the handle.

She looks at me again, this time slowly walking over to me with that same smile still on her face. She stops in front of me and cups my cheek in her palm "You’re back home. I know I can leave it up to you.’’ she stands on her toes and plants a soft kiss on my cheek.

I close my eyes with a silent groan because she seems to think I am back home. I haven’t told her that I will be leaving. There is no way in hell I will stay in this community. I want to go back, figure things out with Rex and Gyles.

I miss them so much and it has only been a couple of days. My life outside the coven is way better than the life I have here.

"You should go get ready; our guests will be arriving soon.’’

I sigh loudly and this gets a chuckle out of her "Come on party pooper. Don’t ruin this happy day for me.’’

I furrow my brow "Almost dying is a happy day for you?’’

She shakes her head as she walks back to her mirror ’’That is where you are wrong,’’ her eyes stop in front of me "Surviving death is a happy day for me. they think they won, but they will never win.’’

I walk out of the room and Levine is just about to enter. She smiles at me "How is she?’’ she asks, knowing full well that my mother will just act as if nothing happened. This is what she does. She likes to pretend like everything is okay.

She doesn’t acknowledge problems and that is why I never knew about Jules. That is why she kept it from me for so long.

"She is crazy,’’ Levine laughs at my admittance and I watch her as she walks away from the hall and to the direction of my room. Mother might want to act like nothing happened but I will find out on my own and then I will leave.

I grab my phone from my pocket and dial Eva’s number. She answers on the first ring "I need your help,’’ I tell her because I need to get this over with and return to my babies.
