Chapter 90: The voices

Cedric watched the carriage leave before heading back inside the palace. Something was strange about the priestess, his guts told him so.

He was acting weirdly around her like he was compelled to look at her; his will was controlled. The more he stared at Callista the more guilty he felt. He should not be looking at those blue eyes that remind him of Abrielle, but a calm voice keeps on whispering.

It was okay to stare at Calista in Abrielle’s presence. After all, she wanted him dead. Abrielle was also a nemesis but Callista was pure. A pure heart who was not meant to be entangled with the messy royal life.

"What is wrong with me?" He mumbled he didn’t understand his emotions anymore. Just yesterday he was mad at himself for the dumbest reason ever. He felt jealous when Abrielle called Lucian’s name in her sleep with a subtle smile.

He hated it; why did Lucian have to be the one who made her smile even in her sleep when she was always cautious around him? What was so special about Lucian?

He wanted to give her some space to clear his thoughts, Abrielle was his poison that was wrecking his boundaries and reasoning. He should not be too close. Even the voice that always whispers to him tells him the same, but he is compelled by those blue eyes.

The distance didn’t change a thing. Instead, he was having this strange urge he didn’t understand that felt wrong. To make things worse, he could not forget the look she had on her face when Lucian arrived.

He was scared at the thought that she loved Lucian instead; the perfect prince admired by all and not a monster like him. The problem has always been Lucian.

"Elias," he called out, summoning Elias, who was hanging close in the shadows. "Yes, your Highness," Elias answered.

A haggard breath left his lips, "investigate everything you can find about the priestess." He instructed he had to get to the bottom of this. "Are there any other instructions you have?" Elias inquired. Cedric’s footsteps stopped then he clenched his fist.

"I want you to run a background check on Abrielle to see if she has ever been close Lucian in the past." He instructed then Elias retreated. He recognized the look she had in her eyes before she was forced to look away.

It was like she met an old lover she had been missing. He did not like the thought of them having anything. It can be anyone, even Alfonso, but not Lucian. He hated the fact he had brothers.

Abrielle was sent to Cedric’s residence after Lucian appeared with Callista. They wanted to talk about more important things, but the king felt a talentless, spoilt daughter didn’t need to take place.

Although he never said it, it was obvious from the way he handled the situation. The carriage continued moving slowly away from the main palace.

When Cedric came of age, he was given a castle on a desolate part of the island still within the palace grounds. It was his safe haven from the schemes of his stepmothers. At least he didn’t have to worry about the food poisoning he suffered during his childhood.

Abrielle’s eyes narrowed remembering the fact he suffered a lot of poisoning attempts. Did he get immune to poison due to that and her first attempt failed? A long sigh left her lips. Her days were now numbered.

An hour later, she finally arrived at Cedric’s Castle, which was close to the sea. The scent of sea salt and ice filled the air, and she was particularly cold.

She alighted from the carriage and was led inside by Evelyn. "Your lunch will be ready soon," she informed Abrielle who nodded until she suddenly halted her steps.

"Evelyn, how about the girls from the slave auction?" Abrielle’s voice asked, "They are being taken care of and await your instructions."

"I want to speak to the one from the wandering clan, bring her to my chambers with some tea. I want to have tea before lunch." She instructed and Evelyn left to carry out her instructions.

Abrielle was led to her chambers; unlike the grand Crescent Palace, which was primarily made of white and gold colours, Cedric’s Castle had a darker vibe. It really looked like a villain layer lined with dark walls and decorated with red and gold, giving it a dark but mysterious vibe.

"This is your room, your Highness," the maid informed her as they arrived in front of large wooden doors lined with intricate designs.

The doors were pushed open, and Abrielle stepped in; she was impressed by the arrangements. The room had a lot of resemblance to her room back at the Nightshade estate.

They had deliberately copied it intending to make her feel at home. Unlike the rest of the castle, which had dark walls, this room has a light touch to it. With white walls decorated with flowering designs with a bright colour theme.

"The tea will arrive soon," the maid said from behind Abrielle, waiting to dismiss her. "Where is Cedric’s room?" She asked, aware of the fact they would be staying in different rooms except for the mandatory night. Once a week, they must stay in the same room.

It was Darconia’s custom, especially when a Prince takes in his first wife; he must spend at least one night a week with her.

"The prince’s room is on the other wing." Abrielle’s eyes narrowed exactly how she envisioned it. Cedric despised Abrielle’s presence to the level he didn’t like running into her, so their rooms were far away on different wings of the castle.

She settled down in the room, getting rid of her heavy coat, and then took a seat close to the fireplace. There was a knock on the door then it opened. Evelyn came in carrying the tea and snacks; behind her was Zoltana.

It was time Abrielle confirmed Zoltana’s identity. Up till now, she hasn’t gotten any notifications about the mission to find the hermit witch.
