Chapter 52: On his mind

Cedric spent the entire day outside, what was the point of a honeymoon if she was going to spend her time alone in the castle? Not that she was complaining at least with him away she didn’t have to keep her guard up at all times.

She had the notebook with her the entire day, she was followed everywhere. Cedric’s people eyes were always on her and it felt like she was thrown into a labyrinth with no one to trust at all.

She excused herself to the bedroom in the evening because she had to hide the notebook before at night when the maids would help her change her clothes and the only place she could have some privacy was in this bedroom when Cedric was not around.

Abrielle opened the book and was confused as to why it was empty. Where was the so-called system now she needed it to explain some things to her. She sighed then fell back on the bed.

Before she could figure out what this book meant to her she was faced with another challenge how to hide the book without anyone finding out, especially Cedric.

The best bet she had was among her luggage but the maids had access to it and she could not possibly carry it at all times. Then a crazy idea crossed her head, how about she hid it with her wedding dress? No one would touch that anyone and it was kept in a separate box to preserve it because of what it symbolizes.

She quickly got off the bed to rummage through her luggage until she found the box. Her neatly folded dress was in it, she then hid the wrapped notebook in between the fabric layer.

The moon had already hit the sky by the time Cedric’s group arrived back at the castle. He glanced towards the direction of this room window. He was certain by now that Abrielle had gone to sleep.

Coincidentally Sarah’s village was nearby, that was why she was assigned to travel with them. She was from the same village as Lily and the two girls were playmates while growing up but yet she didn’t bat an eye to end Lily’s life.

Cedric had gone to the village to find Sarah’s family, if she was a witch her family must be associated with dark magic. Not everyone in this world possessed holy magic only a few noble bloodlines and in rare cases commoners would be indirectly related to those bloodlines.

Witches were a mystery and were often associated with mischief and danger. Unfortunately on getting to the village after a careful investigation that took his men two weeks, they found out Sarah’s only family her elder sister had suddenly left the village a day after her sister’s death.

From Cedric’s guess the sister was also a witch. "Welcome your Highness," he was welcomed by the head maid.

"Where is the princess?" Cedric inquired although he had an idea where she might be. "Her Highness had already retired for the night. Do you want me to arrange your meal?" The head maid inquired.

"No need for that." Cedric turned down and then came down from the horse heading inside the castle. He knew it was the queen who was after him but there was no evidence to pin it down.

He made his way up to his wing, he was completely exhausted from the trip he made on horseback instead of a carriage to save time.

The door to his room creaked open and he immediately sensed an ominous presence in there that made him frown. His eyes were drawn to the large king-sized bed where Abrielle was already fast asleep. It was very late close to midnight.

There he saw a presence hanging around his wife, it was a ghost although he wasn’t sure if it was an evil spirit or just a wandering spirit but it was a bad sign.

It was common knowledge to ignore ghosts or spirits if you could see them no matter how harmless they were because they attract darker entities and monsters that prey on them even bad luck but he could not ignore one that seemed to have clung to his wife.

If she gets into unnecessary trouble it would only bounce back to him. "You shouldn’t be here." He mentioned attracting the spirit that was watching Abrielle in her sleep.

The spirit’s presence was faded, it was very weak but he could guess it was a girl, likely the maid Sarah killed. The spirit’s eyes went wide in fear and moved closer to Abrielle’s. It did not want to part with Abrielle.

Now Cedric was curious about what had happened that made it cling to her. "You leave me no choice then," Cedric said, his eyes flickered pitch black with a dark flame forming on his fingertips.

"You have no intentions of leaving so I had to get rid of you. I am the only one allowed to hurt her." He said with a smile then the flames as his fingertips disappeared.

Then snap the spirit was engulfed with the black flames. It tried to escape but the flames only burned it until it disappeared from existence.

Cedric moved towards the bed to sit, his hand reached out for hair but froze halfway before he pulled it back to brush through his dark hair. "What am I doing?" He groaned then a smile that didn’t react his eyes graced his lips.

"I am sure you were thinking of more creative ways to kill me all day while I was thinking about you and how you planned to kill me. It’s hilarious how you were on my mind firefly."

The curtains were pulled open with a large amount of light coming in through the curtains. Abrielle squeezed her eyes together and then turned to the opposite side to sleep more.

"Your Highness, please can you wake we have to prepare early?" She heard Evelyn’s voice. Abrielle sluggishly opened her eyes which fell on the empty spot on the bed that was dipped and a bit warm.

Cedric slept here but had already left. She closed her eyes and then grumbled. "I want to sleep a bit more."

"I understand the feeling Princess Abrielle but we need to get you ready for breakfast earlier so that you will be able to leave on time," Evelyn explained and Abrielle finally woke up.

"Where am I going to?" She asked Evelyn too lazy to get up.

"The winter hunt starts today and you and his highness have to leave early," Evelyn informed Abrielle and she immediately jolted up. "Cedric agreed to attend the hunt." She chimed excitedly unable to hold her excitement.
