Chapter 404: Wanted

The banquet was lively as ever, no one knew of the silent drama happening in the royal palace. Callista whispered silently to Eleanor. The queen’s expression was calm, but her eyes became turbulent.

She glanced at the head physician, the Lord of the North tower, Cecilia’s grandfather. Lord Duncan was sitting with his family, and he understood her gaze. Duncan rose and made his way out of the banquet hall. Eleanor was about to leave, but her son’s hand caught her wrist.

The look she gave Lucian was more than enough for him to realise King Kaiden Von Drakkar was dead. Eleanor excused herself from the room hall followed by Lucian.

This odd behaviour caught the eyes of some. The first prince was seated, his expression the same as always, as he drank from his cup. Alfonso sensed the weird atmosphere..

Immediately, Cedric didn’t return with Abrielle, he knew something was off. A physician and then Callista. Alfonso’s eyes darkened a smirk on his lips. Something has happened to Kaiden and Cedric has sent Abrielle off for her safety. He was only here to keep up the image. To make it less obvious

A few minutes later the door burst open and the music stopped. "The banquet has to come to an end." One of the queen’s aides announced. Everyone was puzzled but they knew something was off..

Cedric’s face was calm, Kaiden’s death has been confirmed. "Under the queen’s order, no one is allowed to leave the palace." The second announcement put everyone on alert.

Alfonso placed his cup and then whispered. "Are you behind this or someone with a grudge is trying to frame you?" He asked an indirect question. Cedric smiled. Alfonso was smart, that was one thing he would give him credit for.

The hall was wrapped in tension, and guests were barely able to eat. They were all curious about what was happening.

Cedric tilted his glass to his lips. The red liquid slipped through before he replied. "What do you think, dear little brother? What side are you picking?" It sounded like a taunt..

Alfonso laughed, it was ironic how the entire room was tensed but the princes did not seem to care ..

"At least a decision that doesn’t endanger me and my mother. I take others into consideration before taking action, unlike you. You pulled Abrielle into this hell." Alfonso’s hand clenched under the table, and his face was still smiling and teasing.

Cedric scoffed, Alfonso believed he killed Kaiden. He doesn’t blame him. It was natural that the black sheep of the family would be the first suspect.

"She is my wife and not yours. Don’t tell me how I should love her." He said, his eyes dead on Alfonso. "Not for long from the look of things." Alfonso sneered. Cedric was going to be the cause of the princess’s death.

"We will see about it," Cedric stated. He wondered how long it would take for Abrielle to safely escape the capital. Cedric’s ears perked up. Footsteps were coming, he sighed then stood up.

"I guess we might cross blades later, but one thing I would say is don’t trust everything you see. The true villain might be the hero." Cedric’s words were weird but he knew what he was saying

The guards at the door dared not stop him as he left the banquet hall but he was soon surrounded by the imperial knights.

"No one is allowed to leave Your Highness." The commander stated. Cedric gave him a bored look. "I am not ready to spill any blood, Captain. We both know you can’t take me on." Cedric sneered agitating the captain.

His jaw clenched as he glared at the first prince. That was when it happened. The silver bell on the right side of the palace rang. The bell close to the king’s chamber that only rang on two occasions..

Firstly during the coronation of a new king

Secondly the death of the king.

The bell was loud enough to reach all corners of the capital. The reason in this case was the latter. Kaiden’s death has been announced.

The knight’s expression went blank upon hearing the bell. Cedric clicked his tongue. Was Abrielle going to have enough time to escape? He had planned to stay around and divert their attention from Abrielle, but things were moving fast.

.

"Sorry, but I have to leave." The knights’ grip tightened around their swords. "The queen instructed no one to leave ", the captain insisted, causing Cedric to laugh. His eyes were condescending and it infuriated the captain.

"Bold of you to think I care about Eleanor’s words. Now step back, I don’t like to repeat myself." Cedric’s tone dropped towards the end. A strong aura filled the room, causing the knights to shake, too scared to attack, but the captain bit his lips and charged forth.

"You leave me no choice then." He charged at Cedric. The first prince pulled out his swords, and in a matter of seconds, with his fast movements, they were all knocked unconscious.

It was only a matter of seconds before Eleanor placed the blame on him. Even without Abrielle being framed, she was likely to take him out first, the biggest threat to Lucian’s succession.

Abrielle’s being framed was just a justification, and the crazy part was that Eleanor was not the one behind this marvellous idea. At least she never saw her husband’s life as a tool

Cedric’s footsteps were calm and collected. The outside air was chill. It felt like a good night to escape. The courtyard was busy with knights running around, all following standard protocols following the king’s death. The murder hasn’t been announced yet, so they didn’t bother stopping Cedric.

Outside of the palace, Elias and Axel were waiting for him on horseback. Their gaze was firm. Cedric accepted the reins and climbed on before urging the horse to run.

They chose to stand by his side.

"I thought you would be absconding," he chimed. Axel smirked. "Not by the slightest chance. Evelyn has already rushed to the princess’s side to get her."

"I guess the plan is to act as a diversion for the princess to escape the capital," Elias said knowing what was on Cedric’s mind.

They crossed the palace gates, Cedric glancing behind. He was going to try using the road, taking their attention from the waterways, which Abrielle was going to use for her escape.

Back in the palace, Eleanor finally stepped out of the king’s chamber. The head of the imperial army, one of the oldest generals and Eris’s father, the Duke of Silverheart, bowed before her, just as everyone else.

She was now the queen regent until the next king was crowned. Undoubtedly Lucian.

"What are your orders, your majesty?" The Duke asked.

"I hereby declare the first prince of Darconia, Cedric Von Drakkar, the prime suspect of the murder of King Kaiden. He shall be stripped of every privilege of his title and is declared wanted dead or alive."
