Chapter 403: Kaiden is dead
Cedric emerged, his brows furrowed as he entered deep thought. What was going on? It felt like someone was trying to frame Abrielle.
He closed his eyes to heighten his sense of hearing. His eyes went wide in shock, and he grabbed Abrielle, who was equally puzzled, and they were engulfed by black smoke.
The smoke disappeared, a dim room revealing itself before them. Abrielle was still confused about what was going on. Cedric walked forward, leaving her side, towards the bed. He stopped halfway and his lips parted. "Kaiden is dead."
His hand clenched, and everything was starting to make sense now. The reason he rushed to check Kaiden was because he sensed him struggling to breathe and just as expected he died before he got here
It was an assassination, and Abrielle was made the scapegoat. That was the only explanation why someone with a similar feature to her was enchanted to appear exactly like her. Wearing the same dress?
"He is dead," she blurted. She had suspected Kaiden would die very soon but this gave her a weird feeling. Cedric stepped forward, his gloved hand studying Kaiden’s, whose breathing had stopped. His eyes were wide open in shock at his last moment.
He was probably stunned to see his daughter-in-law before his death. "Did anyone see you while coming here?" Cedric asked her calmly. Even in a situation like this, he was still calm and collected.
Abrielle’s hand clenched, sensing the tension. "Bernice and Kairen did see me." She informed him and Cedric hissed. There was an alibi.
"I think you are going to be framed for Kaiden’s death,or rather I would be accused of it. The prodigal son finally killed his father." Cedric laughed. It was truly hilarious.
Abrielle’s stomach twisted and she held Yuki close. "What is going to happen? " She nervously asked him. Her voice was shaking in fright. Cedric stood up and walked up to her. His height was towering,, and a storm was in his golden eyes.
"We have to leave. The physicians are already coming." Cedric informed her. He held her face and the black smoke engulfed them once more. They were at the seaside castle, in her room.
"I will get some maids, you have to do as they say. I don’t know when Kaiden’s death will be announced or how they will frame us but we have to leave Vitalis tonight. Change into something comfortable, better put on some trousers, and grab anything of value to you. We will be gone for a long while." He explained placing a quick kiss on her forehead before turning to leave.
Abrielle grabbed his hand, stopping him. "Please be careful." She told him. She was curious if the maids would be curious about how they got back early.
"I will, if I don’t get back on time. Make sure to ride to AshWood, use the water ways." He explained then left through the door. The castle was almost deserted as almost everyone had gone to celebrate the end of the war.
Cedric’s footsteps were quick, he headed to the maid quarters, he barely enters and found the head maid and Jubilee, who was teaching some embroidery.
The head maid was Cedric’s old wet nurse, the closest thing he had to a mother. She was cunning but he was sure he could depend on her a bit. The head maid was surprised to see her master in her room, but from the look in his eyes, she understood something big had happened.
"The king is dead and Abrielle is in her room. I need you to get her out of the capital safely if I don’t come back on time." He explained, her eyes went wide in shock but she quickly composed herself. Jubilee was in a greater shock but this wasn’t the time to dally around.
"Go grab things your jubilee and come to the princess’s room. We are leaving." The head maid quickly instructed Jubilee, who ran out of the room. While she got up to organise some things she owned. If Cedric was going to be framed, everyone close to him might be executed.
The servants and some knights might be spared but a lot of them will go down if the ’investigation’ goes south. Cedric stepped out of the room into the empty passage. He didn’t make a general announcement because he knew it would only cause chaos.
The servants would be spared, so there wasn’t a need to alarm them, but if they knew some would take it as an advantage to loot the castle, the chaos would draw attention to Abrielle’s escape.
After taking a few more steps, Cedric disappeared and appeared in a quiet corner of the palace close to the banquet hall. He stepped in, and Evelyn, Elias and Axel, his highest ranked, sensed his presence and could read his secret message from his blank expression.
They knew something was wrong. Elias discreetly approached a quiet corner in the banquet hall to speak to Cedric. "Your highness, where is the princess?" He asked first. They were close to a quiet balcony at the banquet hall. Cedric didn’t stop walking, he passed Elias but dropped a message.
"The worst has happened, the decision is in your hands." He said before walking away heading towards the head table reserved for the royal family.
Elias controlled his expression, nothing was but he understood. Kaiden was dead, and Cedric was asking if he was going to give up his position as his knight and seek the protection of his family or escape with him.
He smiled. Cedric underestimated the devotion of the shadow knights. Elias left the banquet hall with Evelyn and Axel discreetly leaving.
Luckily, a good number of the shadow knights went to Blackthorn after the war. Cedric’s men in the capital were not many.
Lucian’s eyes narrowed at Cedric who left earlier to find his wife. Abrielle was not with him. Just as Cedric arrived, Callista came into the banquet hall. Cedric’s eyes narrowed at her, a smirk gracing his lips. That was truly unexpected.
Callista approached Eleanor to whisper in her ear. Eleanor’s expression was still graceful but there was a slight change in her eyes.
