Chapter 402: Mischievous Yuki
Chapter 402: Mischievous Yuki
From the window, she could see Bernice and Kairen who were talking. Bernice’s hand was clenched to her side as she spoke to Kairen, who had a neutral expression.
Abrielle could not tell that they were talking since Bernice’s back was against her and Kairen’s face was blank. He was really good-looking. "Stop thinking about other men. You are married! Abrielle." Her thoughts snapped at her.
Cedric was more good-looking than Kairen without a doubt, but the foreign prince could lure in attention. Bernice was going to have a tough marriage, women who would throw themselves at him
Well, that is if Bernice cares about him.
That aside, her concern was that cat that was mischievously running in the palace. Yuki was staring at her. His eyes were taunting her. She tried to quietly call him back, waving at him because she didn’t want to enter the courtyard and interrupt Bernice and Kairen’s private moment.
Yuki licked his fur which was more interesting than his master at the moment. Abrielle’s brows twitched. She was getting annoyed. Yuki smugly turned around, finally bored with his fur, and ran inside. She was going to kill that cat.
She hissed, her teeth gritting against each other. She had no choice but to cross the courtyard.
Her hands grabbed her dress and she quickly ran towards the courtyard entrance. The clicking sounds of her shoes against the stone path caught the attention of Kairen and Bernice, who were baffled to see Abrielle run towards them.
Abrielle didn’t spare them a glance or even a word and ran across to the other entrance. At the end of the hallway, she saw Yuki standing there like he was waiting for her. He meowed, his expression telling her why she took so long.
"What are you doing here?" She stopped in front of him, then bent over to catch her breath. Her hands reached out to hold him but he slipped away jumping on her face before he hoped to run deeper in the palace
"This is bad," she hissed and continued chasing Yuki. It was weird this entire time she hadn’t come across any guards, and it felt like Yuki was deliberately leading her on.
Should she turn back or continue? In the end, she decided to trust the cat running deeper into the palace. At this point, Abrielle was lost, but she kept on running after Yuki.
To prevent her footsteps from echoing much, she pulled off her shoes and started running barefoot. The strange walls started to look familiar, and she wondered where she had seen these designs and the carving before.
Finally, Yuki stopped running. Abrielle slowed down, planning to catch him unaware.
He was at the end of a corner, his eyes curiously looking in a certain direction. Abrielle drew in a deep breath then dove to catch him. She fell on the floor but she managed to catch Yuki. He didn’t bother to even escape and started rubbing his face against her purring.
"Why did you leave the carriage?" She asked him, Yuki, his eyes still staring in the earlier direction like he wanted to tell her something.
Her brows furrowed, her gaze shifting. The king’s chambers? She was confused and surprised, recognising the doors. How did Yuki know the way here?
The door handle clicked, her body jolted, and she quickly ran to hide against the wall, managing to steal a glance at the chamber’s entrance. Abrielle wasn’t sure if she was allowed here and it was a bad idea for anyone to see Yuki.
The door was pushed open, clicking sounds of heels drew closer. A figure eventually emerged from the door, and Abrielle almost gasped.
Her mouth was sealed with a palm, preventing her from making a sound, and she was pulled backwards just before the figure at the door glanced in her direction. Her heart was beating fast, and chills ran down her spine.
"If you scream we will be caught. Just stay put." She heard Cedric’s voice. Calm and low next to her ears. His breath fanned against her lobes while her mouth was still sealed
Cedric glanced at the door again, and the same figure was still there. He wasn’t seeing things at all. Cedric was cautious not to be seen, the Person stood at the door waiting for someone to come out. Then a maid followed.
The maid who mysteriously disappeared after Abrielle’s failed assassination during their honeymoon. Sarah.
If not for the fact that Cedric could never mistake his wife for another due to his flame mark she carries, he would have been confused between the lady in his hand and the one standing next to the door whispering to the maid which was the real Abrielle.
The same scent, height, voice, and appearance. She was even wearing an identical dress to Abrielle’s. Exactly the same as Abrielle. It was either a doppelganger or magic. His eyes narrowed at the person. There was indeed magic shrouding the individual, but her features were similar to Abrielle’s.
The magic only made her a perfect clone. What were they doing in Kaiden’s room? The figure glanced in Cedric’s direction, but there was no one. She felt the gaze.
Her steps were cautious as she approached the corner. "What are you doing?" Sarah whispered, confused by the strange behaviour. She raised her hand, warning Sarah to stop, then approached the corner.
Cedric was holding Abrielle closely as they leaned against the wall. Just when the doppelganger was about to glance at them, Yuki jumped out of Abrielle’s hand and attacked as the doppelganger.
"Ahhh," she sharply screamed, as she barely escaped Yuki’s claws. "What is a cat doing here?" Sarah gasped, sending an attack spell which she missed.
Yuki stood on the ground hissing at them. "Maybe someone’s cat got lost. We have to leave before we actually get caught." The doppelganger clicked her tongue ignoring the cat. She pulled Sarah’s arm and they quickly left in the other direction.
Once they were far enough Abrielle broke out of Cedric’s arms and hurriedly grabbed Yuki. That was the same person who helped Sarah escape that day. Her eyes went wide.
Cedric emerged, his brows furrowed as he entered deep thought. What was going on? It felt like someone was trying to frame Abrielle.
He closed his eyes to heighten his sense of hearing. His eyes went wide in shock, and he grabbed Abrielle, who was equally puzzled, and they were engulfed by black smoke.
The smoke disappeared, a dim room revealing itself before them. Abrielle was still confused about what was going on. Cedric walked forward, leaving her side, towards the bed. He stopped halfway and his lips parted. "Kaiden is dead."
