Chapter 399: It just Evelyn
Chapter 399: It just Evelyn
Cedric didn’t feel like going to the banquet again. Either way, it was just going to be a boring party with nobles flattering each other.
"It is too late, I have already gone through the dress-up. Let’s get going, they are awaiting our presence." Abrielle scoffed. He was the one who insisted that they attend the banquet.
Abrielle shrugged him off. She elegantly walked away heading to the carriage. Her footsteps filled with grace, but to Cedric, it felt like she was just taunting him.
Cedric followed behind his wife, leaving Elias and Evelyn, who were dressed up for the party. There was this awkward silence at first between Elias and Evelyn.
She was a bit surprised by how good Elias looked outside of his uniform. He did have good genes coming from his noble family, genes she wasn’t lacking herself.
Evelyn was pretty and had good magic use, thanks to her useless father, whom she didn’t acknowledge. The bastard didn’t say anything when his daughter, who was barely a teenager, was sold. That day Cassandra Desper died.
Elias’s gaze lingered on Evelyn a bit longer than it should. Her dress wasn’t grand like Abrielle’s. It was a simple dress that still suited her elegantly. The dress was ash in colour, not a breathtaking colour but next to her bright blonde hair even ash looked vibrant
"I had no idea you knew how to dress up." Elias teased her. He should have said something nicer to her but he didn’t want things to be awkward between them.
. Evelyn was baffled by his statement. She released a tired sigh, then crossed her arms annoyed by his presence. Annoyed by his face. If he were uglier, it would have been to despise this man she could never beat in a fight.
"A simple you look beautiful Evelyn would have been better. " She clicked her tongue at him. Evelyn didn’t wait for him to continue ogling at her and walked away towards the carriage waiting for them.
She stopped at the door, then glanced at Elias, who went silent. What was wrong with him? He wasn’t his regular teasing self tonight. "Aren’t you coming? Or I can just go without you." She snapped at him. They were meant to share a carriage to the palace.
Elias looked at her then shook his head. What was wrong with him? It was just Evelyn. "Sorry about that. The war had messed with my head." He nervously laughed and then ran up to her. He gave her his hand in a gentlemanly manner.
Evelyn accepted and he helped her inside the carriage before joining her. Elias sat at the far end of the carriage and the wheels started rolling.
"You actually look beautiful, sorry for not mentioning it earlier. I was baffled at how pretty you looked at the moment." Elias awkwardly said. Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat. She scoffed, then turned to the window, hiding the faint red on her cheeks that should not be there.
"You also look good. You should try attending more events than being stuck in the knight uniform. If not, you might be single like me." She sneered with a teasing tone. She felt Elias’ heated gaze on her; she didn’t dare turn around.
"My mother won’t let me be a bachelor for long. She is probably thinking of whom to match me with at the moment." It was not a tease but the truth. There was no way an eligible bachelor like Elias from a good noble home would stay single for long
"It must be nice having a family that actually cares." Evelyn’s voice was barely a whisper. She wasn’t sure he heard her
Back in Abrielle’s carriage, Cedric was glaring at the fur ball that was curled up on his wife’s lap. Before the door had closed, Yuki jumped inside and sought the protection of its master.
Abrielle was amused by how Cedric was jealous of an innocent, cute cat like Yuki. It was just hilarious. She bit back her laughs, and her hands were petting his fur.
"You don’t have to glare at a cat that much. You will make him nervous." Abrielle’s words didn’t make him stare at the cat any kinder. There was something about this clingy feline Cedric always felt was off.
Yuki was aloof. He knew Cedric wouldn’t be able to do anything to him as long as Abrielle was here. His gaze was telling the cat to get lost before he threw it out of the carriage, but Yuki had thick fur.
It rolled its eyes at Cedric which the first prince didn’t miss." It will be better if you send him back. Animals are not allowed at gatherings of that nature." Cedric explained, although it sounded like an excuse it was the truth Yuki won’t be allowed into the palace
"Come on Cedric. Yuki is a good boy. I am sure he would patiently wait in the carriage for us." Abrielle pleaded, it was hard for Cedric to turn her down so he reluctantly agreed.
Yuki meowed. Cedric could swear the cat looked smug at him. Cedric hissed and decided to ignore the cat. It was annoying how Yuki kept rubbing himself on Abrielle.
He didn’t like the idea of her scent being mixed with a cat.
The carriage finally arrived at the palace, and the main courtyard was extremely busy with several carriages going in and out. Cedric wondered if it was appropriate to host an event like this when Kaiden was fighting for his life
He understood Eleanor’s decision. Rumours had started to spread about Kaiden’s condition. This party was the royal family creating an illusion that everything was well when it wasn’t.
His eyes were on his wife, who was saying her farewell to Yuki before leaving the carriage. The cat was still annoying.
"Make sure to stay put and don’t cause any trouble." She warned Yuki. Yuki gave her the cute kitten eyes but she had a feeling he wasn’t going to stay put. She sighed and then got off the carriage with Cedric’s help.
"Since you love him so much, why don’t you get married to him?" Cedric sneered, something dark like jealousy lingered in his tone. He was informed of how the cat has been glued to Abrielle that it even sleeps next to her.
